All Dissertations
This dissertation examines the impacts of climate change on out-of-school time (OST) programs in the U.S., focusing on summer camps. As climate change poses increasing risks to these programs, many OST settings lack the resources or preparedness to address them. This dissertation is structured into three studies, each contributing to an understanding of how climate change affects OST programs and informing strategies for adaptation. The first study explores the portrayal of climate change and related events in the media, analyzing over 14,000 news articles published between 2022 and 2024. Through the identification of three core themes: Crisis & Response, Pop …
Listen To My Story: An Autoethnographic Account Of A Manic Episode, Allison Whitmire
Listen To My Story: An Autoethnographic Account Of A Manic Episode, Allison Whitmire
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Bipolar disorder is a very complicated disease. It's first complexity is that it is a mental illness, so it is "invisible" and there is much stigma attached to seeking treatment. The second complexity is that there are both the highs of mania which contain hallucination and delusions for many as well as the lows of depression. These moods cycle throughout one's life. The third complexity is that because bipolar is both genetic and environmental in origin it steeps itself into the roots of family trees and causes generational trauma. Through examining how bipolar disorder has affected my life, these complexities …

The Impact Of Attachment Education On Families With Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Proposed Workshop, Sabrina S. Stone-Smith
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
For young children with autism spectrum disorder, one important determinant of later social and emotional functioning is the development of a secure attachment. While there is extensive literature outlining the benefits of attachment security, there is a limited number of studies specifically examining programs intended to increase attachment security in this population. This project aims to create a four-session workshop designed to provide caregivers of children in this population with information about attachment theory and parental sensitivity in order to increase the amount of positive and emotionally validating experiences in child-caregiver interactions while reducing parental stress. Future research is necessary …

Evaluation Of The Implementation Of Foster Youth Independent Living Programs In The State Of California, Ingrid Flores
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Foster youth transitioning into adulthood often confront a myriad of challenges stemming from limited social capital and unstable support systems. The transition out of foster care, particularly for Transitional Age Youth (TAY), is fraught with barriers including disconnection from familial ties, inadequate knowledge regarding higher education, financial instability, unemployment, and housing insecurity. In 2021, approximately 4,920 foster children aged out of the system, facing the option to participate in extended care programs designed to facilitate their transition into independent living. Despite these programs, many youths struggle to achieve self-sufficiency. Key legislation, including the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, and …

Evaluating The Effects Of Parental Serious Mental Illness On Life Functioning Of Adult Offspring: A Longitudinal Study, Lena E. Leyva
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Background: Parental mental illness greatly impacts a child’s development by posing great risks to their physical and mental health, academic success, and overall functioning (Naughton et al., 2019; Adjej et al., 2023). It remains clear that exposure to parental mental illness has short-term implications. However, long-term impacts on offspring while entering and managing adulthood has not been thoroughly examined. Objective: This longitudinal study proposes to determine the effects of parental mental illness on life functioning of adult offspring at baseline and then occur every two years over the course of eight years. Method: Quantitative data will be collected from 120 …

Redefining Children’S Experience In Social Services Offices, Julia K. Bryant
Human Development and Family Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The effects of childhood trauma are far-reaching and diverse, influencing physical, emotional, and mental health across a child’s entire lifetime. Research indicates that children who experience adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as abuse or neglect are at an increased risk for various consequences and that the environments they encounter post-trauma play a significant role in shaping their experiences. Social services offices, where many traumatized children are taken for interviews or assessments after being removed from their homes, can often become places of additional distress. This project seeks to address this issue by proposing redesigns for social services offices to create …

Matching Student-Debt Payments With Retirement Contributions Has High Appeal For Low-Wage Workers: Implications For Secure 2.0, Stephen Roll, Mathieu Despard, Guangli Zhang
Center for Social Development Research
Whether to prioritize paying down student debt now or saving for future retirement is a difficult choice, especially for low-wage workers. The SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 allows employers to match employees’ qualified student-debt payments with contributions into their retirement plans, essentially allowing the employee to save and invest while paying down debt. This research brief draws upon data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility (WEIM) survey of a nationally representative sample of vulnerable workers in the United States to examine how such student-loan matching programs affect the retirement savings behaviors of how low-wage workers and how offering these …

The Diegetic Purpose Of Humor In Superhero Media, Ella Ramsey
The Diegetic Purpose Of Humor In Superhero Media, Ella Ramsey
Honors Projects
Superheroes draw fans in with their fantastic powers, but also their humanizing personalities. Humor is one such trait often used to endear viewers of superhero media to the title characters. However, why do these characters maintain their witty personas and cheerful nature as they fight against evil? This question may seem to have a few simple answers, but there is a lack of research explaining the in-depth psychological reasoning for humor in the context of a superhero’s reality. This study investigates the multiple roles humor can play in a hero’s development as a human being. By studying the psychology of …

Living And Dying With Rats (Essay), Trent Mcfury

It is unlikely that a dystopian work would begin with, “Rats have not been seen for centuries, even in Venice.” [...]
Although many species disturb our peace, destroy our crops, and/or are outright dangerous, the eco-existential scaling of a rat (and mice), broonie or pixie-like, makes it a convenient analogical and projective emblem of invasion and subsequent extermination. That which abundantly reproduces, keenly clusters, transforms our bodies, challenges our wits, follows and then remains, travels and then stays, is also a psyche-mirror.

Assessing Middle Eastern American Attitudes Towards Substance Use Disorders
Introduction:
Substance use disorders (SUD) among Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) populations remain largely understudied, despite evidence of high prevalence rates and lower rates of treatment engagement. Unique cultural conceptualizations and beliefs surrounding substance use disorders may perpetuate stigma, further contributing to disparities in access to and utilization of treatment services. This study aims to explore the attitudes and perspectives of individuals from MENA communities regarding substance use disorders, with the goal of identifying and addressing barriers to treatment.
Methods:
An anonymous bilingual Qualtrics survey was administered, gathering responses from …

The Overlooked Dynamics Of Sibling Violence: Sociological Perspectives And Intervention Strategies, Rowland Edet
The Journal of Social Encounters
Sibling violence (SV) represents a pervasive yet underexplored dimension of family violence, encompassing physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. This paper critically examines the intersection of gender dynamics, societal norms, and family structures in shaping SV behaviors. Using social learning theory (SLT) as a foundational framework, the analysis explores how gendered expectations and traditional roles influence the prevalence and forms of aggression, with boys more likely to exhibit overt physical aggression and girls engaging in relational aggression. The paper critiques the deterministic tendencies of SLT, highlighting the agency of individuals in rejecting modeled behaviors, and incorporates intersectionality to address the interplay …

Retirement Plan Access Among Low-Wage Workers In 2024: Implications For Secure 2.0, Stephen Roll, Mathieu Despard, Selina Miller
Center for Social Development Research
Households in the United States struggle to save for retirement, and the problem is acute for low- to moderate-income (LMI) households. In 2022, the federal SECURE 2.0 Act created an expansive suite of policy approaches to facilitate saving in LMI households. This brief discusses key provisions of the act and presents findings from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility (WEIM) survey of a nationally representative sample of vulnerable workers in the United States. The findings suggest opportunities to improve upon the SECURE 2.0 Act’s provisions.

Center for Social Development Research
The SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 aims to improve the retirement security of low-income U.S. households by making retirement saving easier, automatic, and more attractive. The act’s provisions focus on employer-sponsored retirement-savings plans. This brief examines how low-wage employees utilize employer-sponsored retirement-plan features, how they say they would respond to automatic contribution increases, and how job transitions impact their retirement savings decisions. Data come from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility survey, which collects data from a nationally representative sample of vulnerable workers in the United States.
This is the second research brief in a series examining the implications of …
