Emotional Experiences Of Muslim Americans Regarding The Intolerance Displayed By Non-Muslims, Munder Abderrazzaq
Emotional Experiences Of Muslim Americans Regarding The Intolerance Displayed By Non-Muslims, Munder Abderrazzaq
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Muslims in the United States report experiencing unequal treatment and racial profiling from non-Muslims. Recent literature (Simon et al., 2018) suggests the need for further research on the intolerance displayed by majority members from the point of view of minority members in the United States. The unwillingness or refusal to respect or tolerate individuals from a different social group or minority groups, who hold beliefs that are contrary to one’s own, is referred to as intolerance. The display of intolerance among members of different cultural and religious backgrounds can hinder the discovery of new information needed to promote positive social …

Experimental Evidence On Consumption, Saving, And Family Formation Responses To Student Debt Forgiveness, Jason Jabarri, Stephen Roll, Mathieu Despard, Leah Hamilton
Social Policy Institute Research
As policy-makers grapple with whether or not to forgive student debt, for who, and how much, it is important to explore how student debt forgiveness would relate to intended household decisions and behaviors. We conducted a survey experiment that asked participants with student debt to imagine a scenario in which the federal government forgave a certain amount of student debt. We then had these participants report on how this would affect their decisions and behaviors. 1,053 participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions that offered $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, and complete debt forgiveness. Our results indicate that student debt …

Community Violence Intervention At The Roots (Cvi–R), Katheryne Pugliese, Paul Oder, Talib Hudson, Jeffrey A. Butts
Publications and Research
The crime and justice field recently started to label a wide array of violence prevention strategies as Community Violence Interventions. Many of these strategies depend on law enforcement and social services, but the most innovative approaches are community-centered and community-sourced. They are grassroots efforts that rely on the resources of neighborhoods and residents themselves, operating separately from law enforcement and traditional human services. Researchers from the John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center reviewed the history of community violence intervention strategies that operate at the grassroots level (or CVI-R) and examined evaluations of several community-centered approaches, providing recommendations for researchers …

Since independence, Indonesia's foreign policy has always changed. Although the doctrine of a free and active foreign policy that was first coined by the proclaimer Mohammad Hatta in 1948 has never changed, its practice depends on the approaches and interpretations taken by the ruling leaders. The old order leaned towards the eastern bloc, the new order tilted towards the western bloc, and the reform order was in a dilemma due to various domestic and international factors. Of the various political choices that have been made by the Indonesian authorities, which one is more beneficial to Indonesia's own national interests. This …

The problem of overcrowding of correctional institutions in Indonesia is a big problem that must be resolved immediately. The high number of Narcotics abusers who are imprisoned is the main cause of the problem. The restorative justice approach which is an alternative to sentencing that has been implemented in various countries can be an alternative in solving the problem of overcrowding in prisons. Some of the regulatory concepts for restorative justice for narcotics abusers applied in other countries include drug courts in the United States and drug diversion programs in Thailand. Various regulations have been established by the Government of …

Prisoners in prison are dominated by narcotics cases, causing overcapacity. Responding to this problem, a decriminalization policy is needed for Narcotics abusers so that they can be placed in rehabilitation institutions. In decriminalization, Narcotics abuse is an unlawful act but the sanction given is in the form of rehabilitation. The TAT assessment, which is part of the decriminalization policy, aims to determine the role of a suspect in a narcotics crime, whether he is a drug abuser or a dealer and to determine his level of narcotics dependence. Thus the policy of decriminalization with rehabilitation punishment can be appropriately given …

Defund The Police: Snappy Slogan Or A Viable Solution? A Case Study Of Savannah, Georgia, Michayla F. Knox
Honors College Theses
The notion of defunding the police remains a hot-button political topic since the protests of Summer 2020. The forefront of the debate concerns how defunding the police will impact crime rates. Still, the topic has scarcely been investigated empirically. This thesis provides an early examination into the relationship between "defunding the police", reallocating funding, and crime rates in Savannah, Ga. Several experiments are performed to answer three research questions that involve comparing and manipulating the budget provided for policing and the budgets for neighborhood vitality and poverty reduction. The findings show that Savannah allocates significantly more money to the policing …

Indonesian government has some regulations that related to the Rehabilitation Policy for narcotics abusers. Unfortunately, the results are still not as expected. Many problems were found in its implementation, one of them is overcapapcity and overcrwoded at prison due to narcotics convicts or abusers. The other hand the number of abusers who access and receive rehabilitation services at rehabilitation institutions are limited. This study aims to map the problems that occur in the implementation of rehabilitation policies in Indonesia through a qualitative approach using the method of literature review within the framework of input, process, output and outcome logic models. …

Divided We Fall: Gender-Based Occupational Segregation In Kentucky’S Executive Branch 2012-2020., Hillary Mcgoodwin Abbott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fifty-eight years have passed since the Title VII of the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 was signed into law, yet discrimination in employment still occurs; the Kentucky Executive Branch is no exception. This paper will use Theodore Lowi’s agency typology and EEOC categorical data from the 2012 and 2020 Kentucky Office of Diversity and Employment Training Semi-Annual Report on Female and Minority Employment (SAR) to identify gendered occupational segregation in three distinct Executive Branch agencies, address potential contributing factors and areas of change (Alkadry & Tower, 2006; Lowi, 1985; Newman, 1994; Escriche, 2007). Addressing any underlying discriminatory practices that may …

An Analysis Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On The Students At The University Of South Dakota, Alexandra J. Buss
Honors Thesis
The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly took over the United States (US) in the beginning of 2020. Nationally, damages to finances, housing, and mental health have impacted many. Despite being one of the least densely populated states, South Dakota quickly rose to some of the highest rates in the nation and was identified as a national hotspot. While there have been significant reports on the effects of COVID-19 on certain communities (healthcare workers, small business owners, parents), more research is needed on the effects on university students. In this report, I aim to assess damages based on financial status of students, mental …

Jurnal Kajian Stratejik Ketahanan Nasional
The demographic bonus is a phenomenon where the population structure is very beneficial in terms of development because the population of productive age is very large, while the proportion of young people is getting smaller and the proportion of old people is not much. Indonesia will get a demographic bonus, which is the number of labor force ages (15-64 years) reaching around 70 percent, while 30 percent of the population is not productive (aged 14 years and under and aged over 65 years) which will occur in 2020-2030 . On the one hand, demographic bonuses benefit because of the abundance …

Besides being asked to be an Archipelagoc State, almost all of Indonesia's territorial boundaries are surrounded by sea which places these waters as a strategic route because it is passed by international trade routes. Under these conditions, Indonesia must have a defense and security system that is capable of safeguarding its territory to deal with various military and non-military forces. Where a peaceful situation like this is dominated by non-military threats such as illegal fishing, human trafficking, drug smuggling by sea, to accidents and disasters at sea. So it takes institutions that have the power and authority to maintain maritime …

Massive technological and information developments have had an impact on the emergence of new types of drugs or new psychoactive substances (NPS). NPS is a new chemical synthesis designed to imitate the psychoactive effects of legally controlled drugs. Developing and establishing flexible and appropriate legislation is necessary to monitor the circulation and abuse of NPS. This article uses a qualitative method with a normative legal approach based on secondary evidence (literature review). To date, the NPS regulations have been included in the schedule to Narcotics Act No. 35, 2009, which is regulated by the Minister of Health. Assessment of a …

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in the new reality of remote working and learning, forcing group model building practitioners to make an abrupt shift to online workshops. Like our peers, the Social System Design Lab (SSDL) at Washington University in St. Louis confronted this challenge by exploring what tools existed for adaptation and continued collaboration. The shift has not been easy, but it has revealed new insights that suggest areas to leverage the strengths of online GMB long after the pandemic comes to an end.

Natural brain processes make all individuals susceptible to unconscious bias; however, stressful, fearful, or anger-evoking situations as well as the negative influence of media and social surroundings increase the risk of holding obstructive bias, and there is a greater risk of being negatively impacted by this phenomenon when belonging to a minority population (Rose & Flores, 2020). As a result, high rates of infant mortality (10.2 deaths per 1,000 live births for the Non-Hispanic Black population compared to 4.1 in the White population) and cardiovascular related diseases (190.0 cases per 1,000 in the Non-Hispanic Black population compared to 161.3 in …

Small business owners experienced a drastic economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Government pandemic assistance failed to reach many small business owners, especially those historically underserved by financial institutions. Drawing on a 2021 survey of 246 small business owners, the Social Policy Institute at Washington University in St. Louis descriptively examined the extent to which small business owners sought and received business assistance, and whether applications and approval of government assistance varied by race and ethnicity. We find that though Hispanic and Black business owners applied for government assistance at a higher rate than white business owners, Black business …

Consistent Snap Participation Increases Preventative Health Care Visits For Infants, Colleen Heflin, Irma A. Arteaga, Julia Stafford
Population Health Research Brief Series
Food insecurity in families with children has increased dramatically during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Not only is food insecurity a problem on its own, but it is linked to receiving less preventative medical care in the first year of life—including well-child visits and recommended vaccinations. This brief summarizes findings from research examining the connection between SNAP participation and preventative care in an infant’s first year of life in Missouri. Findings show that infants in households that receive unstable SNAP benefits have a lower likelihood of attending all their well-child visits and receiving routine immunizations. Policymakers should consider interventions to simplify …

Paid sick leave is vital for controlling the spread of illness in the workplace and an invaluable public health tool, but too few workers have access to it. In this brief, we examine the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to assess paid sick leave coverage with a focus on the social and economic characteristics of workers without paid leave.
Using a nationally representative survey with roughly 4,000 working respondents, we found that a third lacked access to paid sick leave. Workers without paid leave were younger, more likely to be female, more likely to be white, and less likely to …

At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government of Israel quickly introduced aggressive social distancing measures to curb the virus spread and adapted its unemployment insurance program in response to rising unemployment rates. This study examines the relationship between household income and the experience of material hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic in Israel, and investigates how the receipt of unemployment benefits moderated the relationship between income and material hardship. Using data from a household survey, we find a negative association between household income and the experience of material hardship. Moreover, middle-income households receiving unemployment benefits were more likely to …
