Cultural Implications Of Late Quaternary Environmental Change In Northeastern Texas, Michael B. Collins, C. Britt Bousman Jan 2015

Cultural Implications Of Late Quaternary Environmental Change In Northeastern Texas, Michael B. Collins, C. Britt Bousman

CRHR Research Reports

Northeastern Texas is one of the most intensely studied archaeological regions of the state, principally for the two reasons that (1) archaeologically-rich Caddoan manifestations have long attracted interest and (2) many large land-modifying projects, such as reservoirs and strip mines, have occasioned environmental studies which include investigations of cultural resources. This greater amount of activity relative to other regions in the state has generally prevailed for more than a century (Guy 1990) and prospects are good that archaeologists will continue to intensely research the area in the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, however, they will be hard-pressed to keep pace with the …

Case Study Two: Jewish Time Jump: New York, Owen Gottlieb

Articles

Gottlieb presents an early case study of his mobile augmented reality game Jewish Time Jump: New York design on the ARIS platform for the iPhone and iPad (iOS). The game is set on-location in Washington Square Park in New York city. Players in 5th-7th grade take on the role of time-traveling reporters, landing on site on the eve of the Uprising of 20,000, the largest women-led strike in U.S. History. Based on their GPS location they receive media from over 100 years in the past, interactive with digital characters as they work to gather a story for the fictional Jewish …

Male Hypergamy And Social Status, Cedric N. Floyd May 2014

Male Hypergamy And Social Status, Cedric N. Floyd

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

Male hypergamy, a social pattern rarely observed, has been prevalent throughout history as a symbol of social status for men. Hypergamy is the act of marrying into a higher social class or caste. This paper analyzes a few exemplary men ranging from the Italian Renaissance to Twenty-First Century America to make note of this pattern and attempts to understand how it affects the social order in middle-to-upper class society. The research, gathered from various books on class and society, presents an idea of various men who have, in some way or another, used their marriages as a social asset and …

Love For Sale: Prostitution And The Building Of Buffalo, New York, 1820-1910, Rachel V. Nicolosi Mar 2014

Love For Sale: Prostitution And The Building Of Buffalo, New York, 1820-1910, Rachel V. Nicolosi

The Exposition

Generally referred to as “the oldest profession in the world,” prostitution often earns nothing but derision when spoken about in mainstream media. Women who find themselves in this line of work are often thought to be classless, uneducated, and sexually promiscuous outside of their occupation, and are generally considered to be an example of morally unfit behavior. Despite evidence pointing otherwise, this view of prostitution is one which has unfortunately prevailed since the 1800s. On the American Frontier, prostitution was one of the only legal means a woman could survive, and in east coast cities like Buffalo, New York, one …

The Unbreakable Circle: An Intellectual History Of Michel Foucault, Chris Mb Moreland Mar 2014

The Unbreakable Circle: An Intellectual History Of Michel Foucault, Chris Mb Moreland

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The following is a chronologically ordered internal intellectual history of Michel Foucault. The objective of this analysis is to determine whether or not Foucault provides a viable critical social theory of bourgeois society. In order to examine this topic, I trace the development of Foucault’s thought during his early, pre-archaeological stage, his archaeological stage, and his genealogical stage. I frame Foucault’s stages as attempts to overcome Kant’s subject/object division—or the paradox that man operates as both a meaning-giving subject and an empirical object—that one encounters in discourses pertaining to the social sciences. Foucault’s pre-archaeological stage is characterized by two humanistic …

The Enduring Narrative Of “Socialized” Medicine: Oppositional Rhetoric And Obama’S Health Care Reform, Richard Holtzman Mar 2013

The Enduring Narrative Of “Socialized” Medicine: Oppositional Rhetoric And Obama’S Health Care Reform, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

President Barack Obama and his promises of health care reform were met with strong public support when he took office in January 2009. By the time Congress ultimately passed legislation in March 2010, not only had a majority of citizens turned against health care reform, but many had come to interpret it as inimical to American values. Opponents pejoratively branded the president a “socialist” and his reform as “socialized medicine.” A review of the history of health care reform efforts in the United States over the last eight decades illustrates that this rhetoric and the defining patterns of its proliferation …

Schooling, Community, And Identity: The Perspectives Of Muslim Girls Attending An Islamic School In Florida, Vanessa Martinez Jan 2012

Schooling, Community, And Identity: The Perspectives Of Muslim Girls Attending An Islamic School In Florida, Vanessa Martinez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the number of Islamic institutions increases in America, the need for greater understanding of the Muslim community, and the challenges faced by this minority, increases as well. This project seeks to provide such knowledge by exploring one of these rapidly growing institutions founded and funded by Muslims, private Islamic schools. Absent from media and literature is an understanding of Islamic schools and the experiences of youth as their attendees. This project addresses this gap through an ethnographic focus on female students at one Islamic school. Data was collected via interviews, focus groups, observation, and participant observation. This student-centered approach …

The Changing Geography And Fortunes Of Dublin Haute Cuisine Restaurants, 1958-2008, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Articles

This paper considers the changing geography and fortunes of Dublin’s haute cuisine restaurants over the last half century, placing them within both a national and international context. Ireland’s place within the global story of food is discussed, and the paper illustrates links between Dublin and European and global trends. The paper points out that Dublin in the 1950s could be seen as the gastronomic capital of the British Isles. The leading restaurateurs are briefly profiled, and the decline, stagnation, and gradual re-birth of Dublin’s haute cuisine restaurants over the 1958-2008 period is charted and discussed. The paper combines data from …

Experiential Learning In Washington, D.C.: A Study Of Student Motivations And Expectations, Richard Holtzman Jul 2011

Experiential Learning In Washington, D.C.: A Study Of Student Motivations And Expectations, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

Experiential learning offers students opportunities to learn in real-world settings outside the classroom. In political science, such experiences have been found to enhance knowledge of the political process, positively impact subsequent academic performance, and develop more robust understandings of civic values. While these research findings have led colleges and universities to increasingly mandate service-learning courses, many experiential learning opportunities such as internships and study abroad programs are voluntary and demand student initiative. The purpose of this paper is to explore why students choose to engage in such voluntary experiential opportunities. The research questions guiding this project ask: Why do students …

What’S The Problem, Mr. President?: Bush’S Shifting Definitions Of The 2008 Financial Crisis, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

A case study is presented which examines the political rhetoric of U.S. President George W. Bush concerning the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-2009. Topics include Bush's definition of the economic crisis, his reluctance to recognize the existence of the financial crisis and the relationship between his rhetoric on the financial crisis and his legacy.

Communications Technology In The 2008 Election And Beyond: An Analysis Of Obama Emails, Richard Holtzman, Janet Prichard

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

No political candidate has adopted and employed communications technology to connect with potential voters more effectively than Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential race. Yet, scholarly literature has neglected systematic studies of perhaps the most significant piece of Obama’s communications revolution: the use of millions of targeted emails. No in-depth analyses of these emails have been undertaken. Our research aims to fill this important gap by systematically examining the targeted emails themselves in an effort to understand this phenomenon and its larger significance. We do so by charting their frequency and identifying distribution trends, as well as exploring their content.

George W. Bush's Rhetoric Of Compassionate Conservatism And Its Value As A Tool Of Presidential Politics, Richard Holtzman Jan 2010

George W. Bush's Rhetoric Of Compassionate Conservatism And Its Value As A Tool Of Presidential Politics, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

This essay presents a situational analysis of George W. Bush’s rhetoric of compassionate conservatism. It explores Bush’s regular use of this discourse to address a number of political exigencies that confront all presidents, such as displaying personal character, framing issues, and energizing national values. I examine Bush’s public discourse from the declaration of his presidential candidacy in 1999 to his 2002 State of Union address to illuminate the development of this rhetorical construct and identify how it was employed to address shifting rhetorical situations. While the language did not change over time, the purposes and meanings of compassionate conservatism were …

Bush's Adventures In National Service Policy And Five Lessons For President Obama, Richard Holtzman Jan 2009

Bush's Adventures In National Service Policy And Five Lessons For President Obama, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

As candidates, both Barack Obama and John McCain criticized George W. Bush’s failure to call for sacrifice and service from the American people in the wake of 9/11. However, criticizing the mistakes of a past president is not the same as learning from them. Obama has referred to service as the “cause of my presidency.” If Obama is indeed committed to following through on this campaign rhetoric, what lessons can he learn from Bush’s experiences? This essay offers an analysis of Bush’s adventures in national service policy and, in particular, his failures of presidential leadership in this arena. Its purpose …

Adapting The One-Minute Paper For Active Learning, Richard Holtzman Jun 2007

Adapting The One-Minute Paper For Active Learning, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

This paper suggests a simple exercise that facilitates active learning by embedding regular opportunities for student participation within the structure of an undergraduate course. This exercise involves the use of in-class participation assignments, which are adaptations of a popular classroom assessment technique, the one-minute paper. While likewise serving as an assessment tool, the suggested exercise is also able to address an additional range of instructional challenges, such as stimulating critical thinking, facilitating engagement with course materials, encouraging participation, and motivating preparation.

Voluntarism And Volunteering, Richard Holtzman Jan 2006

Voluntarism And Volunteering, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

To engage in voluntarism, as the term is commonly understood today, is to freely offer support in the service of others. Defining the concept in such general terms, however, ignores a number of important factors, such as the motives leading individuals to choose such action, the means by which the activity occurs, and the broader implications of voluntarism for society. This chapter looks at voluntarism from a historical perspective to demonstrate the numerous and sometimes conflicting ways the concept has been understood. Recognizing voluntarism as a social issue requires examining it in the variety of historical contexts and settings that …
