Riset menunjukkan keterkaitan erat antara pemahaman publik tentang disabilitas dan penyandang disabilitas dengan perilaku diskriminatif yang mereka alami dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Pemahaman umum masyarakat di dunia, termasuk Indonesia, tentang penyandang disabilitas masih cenderung negatif. Pemahaman negatif itu karena masyarakat umumnya mendefinisikan dan memperlakukan penyandang disabilitas berdasarkan pada pola pikir yang didominasi oleh konsep kenormalan yang berimplikasi pada stigmatisasi dan diskriminasi terhadap para penyandang disabilitas.
