Understanding The Coach Learning Environment In Formal, Field-Based Settings: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Jody L. Langdon, Shayla Snow

Journal of Coach Development

Grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), the purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to evaluate the psychometric properties of SDT-related measures in a sample of coach learners, and 2) to examine the relationships between need satisfaction and frustration, coach motivation, and engagement in training sessions.. A total of 796 coaches participated in the study, completing surveys measuring basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration, coaching motivation, and engagement. Aside from confirming the validity and reliability of measures for use among coach learners, findings indicate that satisfaction of basic psychological needs positively correlated with intrinsic motivation and engagement, while frustration of these …

This study looked at what Black women in high‑level leadership roles are experiencing at predominantly White institutions in Texas and Florida now that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies have been rolled back. Using Black feminist theory and intersectionality as the foundation, the research focused on how race and gender shape their leadership, their decision‑making, and the ways they navigate their careers. Through in‑depth interviews with 10 Black women in executive positions, the study uses a narrative approach to understand their stories. Mentoring programs are pivotal to workforce education, bridging skill gaps and fostering employee retention across industries. Although this study focuses on mentoring practices within the education sector, its findings are broadly applicable to other professions where effective mentoring supports employee onboarding, retention, and professional growth. Through qualitative interviews with mentors and mentees in a North Texas school district, this study identifies key factors contributing to successful mentoring: structured sessions, effective leadership, and prioritization of mentor-mentee relationships. While the findings underscore the universal principles of mentoring, the application of these insights across various professions warrants further research. By situating these findings …
