This study explored the intersection of racialized media narratives, nonprofits, and penal policy through a case study of Just City, a nonprofit criminal justice organization located in Shelby County, Tennessee. Through the lens of Just City, this study explored how nonprofits resist racialized media narratives regarding crime and how in turn this contributes to penal policy reforms. This is accomplished using a thematic analysis to draw larger conclusions from coding Just City’s Instagram and through extensive interviews with Just City staff and local Shelby County and Tennessee politicians. Nonprofit organizations serve a crucial role in tackling a wide range of significant social, environmental, and economic issues. But it is often hard to get a clear picture of their work because their information is spread out and it is difficult to see how they are collaborating. To address this issue we developed a web-based tool to collect scattered data—from a variety of sources, such as the IRS, social media, and the Census, into one easy-to-use resource. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the influence of generational differences and selected demographic characteristics on the motivation to volunteer for organizational boards.

The sample consisted of members of Boards of Directors of selected YMCA regions in Louisiana. The researcher used a quantitative research design and an instrument consisting of the Volunteer Functions Inventory (VIF) and a researcher-designed demographic survey, which was shared via electronic mail, distributed through the Qualtrics system.

Examination of the study results revealed no relationship between the six subscales of the VFI and generational cohorts. However, a positive relationship was found between respondents’ …

Concerns over the unintended negative impacts of humanitarian aid continues to drive research and spirited debate by scholars, policy makers, and practitioners.
