The University of Arizona is in the midst of a major reorganization as the library changes from a traditional organizational structure to a team- centered, user-focused organization. At the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Los Angeles, I had an opportunity to meet with a group of librarians from the University of Arizona who are actively involved in the change process. This was not a traditional interview, but more of a conversation with ten members of the library staff who spoke jointly about their experiences with the reorganization of their library. Recognizing And Managing Multiple Organizational Approaches, Joan Giesecke

Organizational theory today includes a number of analytical models which provide descriptions of how organizations function as well as prescriptions as to how organizations should function. Five organizational models seem particularly appropriate to academic libraries. The rational model describes organizations as value- maximizing units which are task oriented. The political bargaining model views organizations as arenas for conflict and bargaining where participants form coalitions and interest groups to achieve their own ends. The garbage can model views the organization as a chaotic mess where independent actors pursue individual, yet changing goals and decisions are mostly a function of timing. The …

The articles in this collection are based on the discussions and work of the 1993 Senior Fellows as they participated in the UCLA Graduate School of Library and Information Science executive development program. The program included a combination of seminars on topics of interest to participants and unstructured time for research and discussion with colleagues on issues of common concern. The 1993 Fellows focused on the enormous challenges that librarians face today as libraries reengineer to meet the needs of patrons while struggling to stay afloat in today's changing environment.
