The purpose of this thesis is to assess and address the prevalence of mental health issues among incarcerated individuals in America. There are multiple internal and external contributing factors to the disproportionately high numbers of mentally ill inmates. Comparing the United States prison system with other countries such as Norway allows for possible paths to improving the mental health crisis that we are currently experiencing. This thesis looks at the principles and practices used in Norway's prisons as well as how they affect inmate's mental health. What factors impact how people mobilize against state human rights abuses? Drawing on Image Theory, we examine how perceptions of an out-group, government abuse, and sociopolitical orientations impact political action. Using an online survey-embedded experiment with a sample of 2,932 U.S. adults, we manipulated two factors: (1) the level of government abuse and (2) the risk of punishment for taking action against the state, while also including social dominance orientation (SDO) and right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) as covariates. Participants indicated their propensity to engage in and justify both protest and violence. Participants rated the out-group as oppressive and evil. State abuse …

Understanding Disrespectful Behavior Through A Gendered Lens: Race And Power In A Women’S Prison, Timbre Wulf, Rebecca Trammell

"Seventy-four incarcerated women in a Midwestern prison were interviewed to explore their experience with disrespect between inmates and staff in a prison setting. Nonwhite women experienced disrespect and conflict differently than their white peers. While the women generally described disrespect as staff members expressing their power inappropriately, non-white women were quick to describe disrespect as tied to racist behaviors. Further, African-American women in our study were more likely to believe that few people, inmates or employees, show respect to others on a regular basis in prison. White women tend to be more positive in their evaluations of interactions with staff …

"The work of ‘experts’ with policy advisory panels plays an important part in the making of illicit drug and other policies. This article explores what is involved in this work. It uses critical realist auto-ethnography of the author’s experience over five years of working with the UK’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs and the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee. On the basis of a 2019 YouGov survey of white respondents (n = 734), the impact of racial beliefs on support for Donald Trump was explored. The analysis revealed that in addition to racial resentment, white nationalism—a desire to keep the United States white demographically and culturally—was strongly related to faith in Trump. Analyses based on a 2019 Amazon Mechanical Turk survey yielded similar results and also showed that white nationalism increased willingness to wear a MAGA hat. Future research on the political consequences of racial beliefs should focus on what whites think not only of blacks but also …

Recently, legislative campaigns to totally decriminalize the sex trade industry in a handful of U.S. states and the District of Columbia failed, but a look at campaign supporters and their arguments demonstrates that libertarian principles are mainly guiding their efforts. This article explores how libertarianism principles, when applied to the sex trade, could bring about severe and lasting harm to others, including sellers of sex, potential victims of sex trafficking to meet the new demand, and the general community. Philosophic principles of liberty have been incorporated by courts, which find that liberty is never absolute and requires a balancing test …

"Once incarcerated, inmates face a myriad of potential threats to their physical and emotional wellbeing. The threat of being sexually or otherwise victimized while in prison breeds anxiety and fear among inmates, especially those who are new to the prison environment. In response, inmates have developed strategies to avoid victimization. The present study, utilizing self-report questionnaires, asked a sample of male and female inmates in a large Southern prison system about the advice they would give to another newly incarcerated inmate to avoid being sexually assaulted. Since the Great Recession in 2007, rural employment rates have been steadily increasing. According to a 2020 United States Department of Agriculture report, rural unemployment has been at its lowest in over a decade. However, such aggregate trends overlook an important aspect of work—its meaningfulness. In many small towns throughout the Southern United States, much of the available work pays little and demands much on the body. As a result, meaningful employment is often out of reach for some men living in the rural South.

"Judicial discretion in sentencing has historically produced disparities in criminal sentencing outcomes. In an effort to address disparity at the federal level, in 1984, the U.S. Congress passed legislation that led to the creation of the U.S. Sentencing Commission and subsequently the adoption of federal sentencing guidelines. Studies show that even among similarly situated defendants (in terms of offense score and criminal history category) disparities have persisted regardless of the sentencing guidelines. "This paper examined the perceptions of convicted sex offenders and their interactions with law enforcement over time. Specifically, we focused on how formal interactions influenced stigma management and self-identity transformation. For decades, scholars have proposed that identities and behaviors often result from interactions with others. Sex offender registration and notification laws force interactions between registrants and police agents for years, if not a lifetime. Given that desistance from sex offending is dependent on prosocial identity transformation, we analyzed interviews with 63 registrants to uncover how interactions with police promote or inhibit identity transformation over time. "The wellbeing of prison officers has primarily been understood as a function of contextual variables such as their workplace and the nature of their role. Yet the research suggests the officers’ gender and tenure are the only statistically significant predictors of wellbeing for this population (Butler, Tasca, Zhang, & Carpenter, 2019). These findings suggest that variables at the person level may be more important than contextual variables. The dominant approach to addressing violence against women in Egypt today is carceral, or relying on the punitive instruments of the state to achieve justice (most visibly represented by the prison and police). While carceral responses are perhaps unsurprisingly advocated by state feminism, they are also promoted by what would typically be described as anti-state actors. This paradoxical entanglement takes place during what I identify as the 'carceral moment', a period marked by the intensification of political and social repression and during which incarceration appears more readily available as a solution to remedy perceived problems of governance. Previous studies have examined the relationships between various demographic characteristics (e.g., race/ethnicity, prior arrest experience, residential living area, political affiliation) and various measures of attitudes toward police (e.g., trustworthiness, legitimacy; Brown & Benedict, 2002; Hindelang, 1974; Rizer & Trautman, 2018; Schuck et al., 2008). Judges, attorneys, and psychologists are individuals in the legal system who have the most interaction with child custody evaluations (CCEs), yet there is little research regarding whether these parties have different views on what factors are important in CCEs. The present study examined how judges, attorneys, and psychologists evaluated sole-parent child custody cases. A sample of judges, attorneys, and psychologists completed a forty-item questionnaire regarding their opinions of what factors they believe are most/least important in CCEs. The paper studies the immense opposition to a nonviolent campaign against the practice of moral policing in Kerala to understand the dominant spaces, collective identities, and discourses that give shape to the outrage of public morality in India. The campaign through its politics specifically targeted rightwing and political groups as well as socially embedded familial and institutional structures that exercise control over individuals through patriarchal regimes. Metaphors provide the opportunity to make sense of our experiences and share them with others. The current research qualitatively examined interviews with adoptive parents who had adopted through intercountry or private adoptions. Throughout their interviews, each participant used at least one metaphor in describing their experiences of adopting and raising their child. Overarchingly, the metaphor of “Adoption is a journey” encapsulated parents’ experiences. To demonstrate the journey, parents used metaphors to describe the past, present, and future. Metaphors of the past focused on their child’s trauma and the origin of how the child came to join their family. Metaphors used …

What is the likely effect of the recession brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic on indigent defense budgets in the United States? To look forward, we look backward. We examine data on county-level spending on indigent defense in Texas during the Great Recession of 2007–2009. Redistributive policies—those which use taxpayer funds to support individuals who themselves pay little or no tax—are particularly susceptible to cuts during times of fiscal stress. Yet our analysis shows indigent defense policy, measured in terms of spending and access to counsel rates, was generally stable through the Great Recession years, even in counties hit hardest. …

A substantial body of literature connects media effects to consumer perceptions of the criminal justice system. Research on the topic of cultivation theory has highlighted that an increased fear of crime within the general populace, due to an exaggeration of violence and criminal activity in the mass media, has spurred increased support for punitive policing, harsher sentencing, and positive feelings toward capital punishment. However, no research exists to explicate the cultivation of consumer perceptions toward the criminal courts. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์พหุวัฒนธรรมและประชาธิปไตยเชิงวัฒนธรรมผ่านพื้นที่ความเชื่อเรื่องนัตในพื้นที่มัณฑะเลย์ ประเทศเมียนมา ผลการวิจัยพบว่าในพื้นที่ความเชื่อเรื่องนัตมีหลายฝ่ายเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้อง ทั้งฝ่ายผู้ปกครองและฝ่ายประชาชนผู้นับถือนัต โดยฝ่ายผู้ปกครองพยายามเข้ามาควบคุมจัดการหรือกระทั่งทำลายความเชื่อเรื่องนัตในบางยุค อันเป็นลักษณะของความรุนแรงทางวัฒนธรรม อย่างไรก็ตามการจัดการควบคุมดังกล่าวก็ไม่สามารถทำได้เด็ดขาดในระดับที่ผู้คนรู้สึกเป็นพวกเดียวกันได้ เอกภาพทางวัฒนธรรมความเชื่อไม่เคยเกิดขึ้น ปรากฏเป็นการต่อรองและการประนีประนอมอยู่เสมอ กระทั่งพื้นที่ความเชื่อเรื่องนัตสามารถเปิดรับเอาความหลากหลายเข้ามาอยู่ร่วมกัน แม้การเมืองเมียนมาปัจจุบันจะยังค่อนไปทางเผด็จการ แต่พหุวัฒนธรรมที่สะท้อนให้เห็นในพื้นที่ความเชื่อเรื่องนัต ก็จะเป็นปราการสำคัญในการป้องกันกระแสสุดโต่ง และจะเป็นพื้นฐานสำคัญรองรับกระแสการขยายตัวของเมือง ตลอดจนการพัฒนาประชาธิปไตยของเมียนมาในอนาคต

บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่ออรรถาธิบายความเป็นมาของ node หน่วยประสานเครือข่ายงานด้านการพัฒนาสังคมในประเทศไทยและอภิปรายใน 3 ประเด็น คือ 1. บทบาทและรูปแบบการทำงาน 2. องค์ประกอบด้านคุณลักษณะของ node ประกอบด้วยคุณลักษณะด้านความรู้ ทักษะ และเจตคติต่อการทำงานพัฒนาสังคม และ 3. ความสัมพันธ์ของ node กับงานพัฒนาสังคมตามทฤษฎีเครือข่าย-ผู้กระทำการ ผลการถอดบทเรียนการทำงานของหน่วยปฏิบัติการวิจัยเพื่อการพัฒนาด้านเด็กและเยาวชน พบว่า 1. node มีบทบาทเป็นผู้สร้างการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสังคมโดยมีรูปแบบการทำงานแบบประสานความร่วมมือกับองค์กรทางสังคม 2. node ต้องมีคุณลักษณะด้านความรู้ที่หลากหลายทั้งกว้างและลึกเชิงประเด็น มีทักษะการสื่อสารเพื่อสร้างพื้นที่การมีส่วนร่วม และมีอุดมการณ์ในการทำงานเพื่อส่งเสริมสิทธิมนุษยชนและสันติภาพ และ 3. ความสัมพันธ์สัมพัทธ์ตามแนวคิดทฤษฎีเครือข่าย-ผู้กระทำการที่ node สร้างผ่านการทำงานพัฒนาสังคมทำให้เกิดปฏิสัมพันธ์ข้ามองค์กรและสานเครือข่ายงานด้านการพัฒนาสังคมให้ขยายออกไปในแนวระนาบจนเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่ยั่งยืนในระดับปัจเจกชน พื้นที่ ตลอดจนโครงสร้างทางสังคม

In this essay, my contention is two-fold. One, Bong Joon-ho’s f ilm Parasite (2019) is not simply about class inequality but more importantly addresses the question “what is (not) to be done?”.To appreciate this point, we have to investigate it alongside Bong’s previous f ilms, especially Snowpiercer (2013) and Okja (2017). Although these three f ilms possess vastly different storylines,they all wrestle with this burning political question from different angles: seizure of state power and revolution (Snowpiercer), “folk politics” (Okja), and neoliberal privatization of social problems (Parasite). เบื้องหลังของทุกนโยบายการพัฒนาประกอบด้วยความคิดทางการเมือง ซึ่งรัฐอาศัยอำนาจในการประกอบสร้าง “ความรู้” และ “แนวทาง” การพัฒนาโดยมีเป้าหมายให้เกิดผลดังเช่นที่รัฐต้องการ บทความวิจัยนี้มุ่งศึกษาความคิดทางการเมืองไทยในนโยบายการพัฒนา โดยอาศัยแนวทางการวิเคราะห์วาทกรรมเชิงวิพากษ์ ซึ่งตัวบทที่เลือกมาศึกษา ได้แก่ คู่มือการขับเคลื่อนการพัฒนาประเทศผ่านโครงการไทยนิยม ยั่งยืน ที่รัฐบาลคณะรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ (คสช.) เป็นผู้ผลิตและตั้งใจถ่ายทอดเนื้อหาดังกล่าวให้ประชาชนผ่านการจัดเวทีในหมู่บ้านและชุมชนก่อนการเลือกตั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2562 ตัวบทดังกล่าวสะท้อนความคิดทางการเมืองของรัฐบาล คสช. ในเรื่อง 1) ประชาธิปไตยไทยนิยมและสากลนิยม 2) การเลือกตั้งคนดี 3) รัฐอุปถัมภ์ และ 4) ประชาชนเป็นผู้รับการอุปถัมภ์ ซึ่งความคิดและปฏิบัติการทางวาทกรรมของรัฐบาล คสช. เป็นการผสมผสานรูปแบบดั้งเดิมและรูปแบบใหม่ ด้วยหวังว่าจะสามารถรักษาความเป็นอำนาจนิยม พร้อมไปกับการได้รับการยอมรับจากประชาชน ทั้งหมดนี้สามารถเข้าใจได้ผ่านบริบททางเศรษฐกิจ สังคมและการเมืองของนโยบายการพัฒนาของไทยตั้งแต่อดีตสู่ปัจจุบัน
