Canada is often regarded as the United States’ friendlier neighbor to the north, but how welcoming is it really? A critical analysis of immigration and citizenship policy throughout Canadian history reveals that Canada may not be the inclusive member of the world community it is often conceptualized as. This paper examines some of the recent key changes in Canadian immigration policy and their broader contexts, while benchmarking the policies against two leading scholars' thoughts on how the relative presence of certain political ideologies in a country drives its immigration policies to the left or right of the political spectrum. This thesis studies the economic impact of the Indian demonetization which was a unique monetary event that made 86.9 percent of the total currency in circulation illegal tender overnight. The decision to demonetize high-value currency notes was taken by the Indian government on November 8th, 2016, leading to a severe shortage of cash. This thesis tries to analyze how the impact of the demonetization differed across districts in India and how the characteristics of those districts pertaining to education, electricity and tap water access, employment, and technology access can help explain these differences. An evaluation of four Wake County capital cases from 2014-2018 reveals the disparate effects that the jury selection process had on Black and female potential jurors and especially on Black female potential jurors. The requirement that capital jurors be willing and able to sentence death systematically excluded Blacks and females, with Black females excused for this reason at a rate over three times higher than White males. Black potential jurors not struck for death qualification were disproportionately excluded by prosecutorial peremptory strikes at a rate nearly two times greater than Whites. The Head Start program is an early childhood intervention program funded by the federal government. Designed for low-income families, it promotes school readiness among its participants. In my research, I examine the effects of Head Start on the intergenerational mobility of its participants. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) and the NLSY Child and Young Adult Supplement (CNLSY), I measure the degree of earnings persistence between parents and their children for students in preschool and Head Start. I find that participation in Head Start is associated with an increase in mobility, which remains true after controlling …

The word “corruption” has two separate but interrelated meanings. The first kind of corruption refers specifically to an abuse of public office for private gain; the second is broader and indicates a disjunction between a political reality and the ideal to which that reality ought to conform. This paper explores the role of various forms of “corruption talk” in the 2020 presidential election. The first part of the paper examines the “supply side,” looking at the kinds of “corruption narratives” that politicians offered in 2020. Does Yom Kippur impact electoral turnout in religious and secular Jewish communities in Israel? By collecting data on electoral behavior in elections to local councils from 1983 to 2018 in Jewish-secular, Jewish-religious and non-Jewish municipalities, this research attempts to elucidate the relationship between the communal Yom Kippur experience and electoral turnout. This research finds that the Yom Kippur experience appears to decrease turnout in secular municipalities, while no statistically significant impact was observed in religious municipalities. Research on the psychological significance of novelty and religious events, as well as ethnographic analysis of Israel, suggests that the Yom Kippur experience undermines …

The 2002 film ‘City of God’ tells an anecdotal story of violence in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, and is a reminder that the societies we tend to take for granted can actually be a luxury. This study addresses the trends in laws, including employment and anti-discrimination laws, that provide and restrict certain rights of members of the LGBTQIA+ community in eight countries. These nations, both progressive and discriminatory, include the United States, England, Switzerland, Germany, Taiwan, China, the Philippines and Kazakhstan. Approximately 2.7 million children have a parent that is currently incarcerated in the United States. Despite the fact that these children are innocent, they face a myriad of negative consequences due to the separation from their parents. The negative effect of incarceration on children is known as punishment drift. Because the effects of incarceration tend to “drift” onto children, these individuals typically face psychological impacts (e.g., social anxiety and depression), economic impacts (e.g., poverty and food insecurity), and environmental impacts (e.g., foster care) from punishment drift. Since its inception, the United Nations Convention Against Torture (UNCAT) conceived torture as a state crime. The Convention established a so-called “state-nexus” that effectively excludes torture committed by non-state actors. The Committee Against Torture as well as the world’s major anti-torture NGOs have almost exclusively focused on ill-treatment perpetrated by state entities. Yet, there have been efforts to extend the definition to private actors, including the “de facto authority” approach, and the due diligence doctrine. These differences in treatment may lead to discrimination legally, resulting in longer prison sentences and a higher proportion of Black Americans in prison. The Missouri Statute of 1807 existed as the primary act that somewhat ensured the freedom of those enslaved and pursuing their freedom. The act refuted laws such as the Futgitive Slave Clause of 1793 and 1850, and the Missouri Compromise, which were evidence that slaveholders held decisive political influence and could cast the Constitution in proslave terms (Baker 2012). Dr. Katrina Jagodinsky’s Petitioning for Freedom examines marginalized peoples’ use of habeas corpus in the American West from 1812 to 1924. This project has uncovered Indigenous manipulation of the American legal system to counter the challenges of colonialism. Indigenous peoples used habeas to protest, and sometimes successfully mitigate boarding school experiences, forced removal, and confinement on reservations. This study aims to show how Indigenous peoples and other minorities had a complex understanding of the law and used it to their advantage.

Approximately 10-15% of American women will be raped by a spouse in their lifetime (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2002). Research suggests that the American public regards spousal rape as wrong but not rape (Lynch et al., 2017). Research on spousal rape has centered on heterosexual couples despite a higher likelihood that LGBTQ+ individuals will experience severe intimate partner violence (IPV) (Rollé et al., 2019). Therefore, the present study investigated mock juror perceptions of spousal rape of heterosexual and same-sex couples in the courtroom. This project collects, digitizes, and makes accessible the freedom suits brought by enslaved families in the Circuit Court for the District of Columbia, Maryland state courts, and the United States Supreme Court. This project places families in the foreground of our interpretive framework of slavery and national formation.

Using TEI encoding, we focused on outcomes, relationships between individuals and the claim for freedom made. Using these data sets, I focused specefically on mothers petitioning for their children. Habeas corpus protects individual freedom by allowing detained individuals proper trial. Economic liberty, or the “right to earn a living in an occupation of choice without unnecessary government interference,” is a key component of individual freedom. Following the depression of 1893, the Progressive Era ushered in a sharp increase in productivity. This was in part because of an immigration boom. While immigrants sought economic opportunities for the betterment of themselves and their families, ideologies of nativism rose.

งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้ เป็นการสำรวจความสัมพันธ์แบบอุปถัมภ์ (clientelism) ภายใต้ระบอบ คสช. งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้ศึกษาความแตกต่างของความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างรัฐกับมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อยในประเทศเมียนมาและไทย โดยใช้กรณีของโรฮีนจาในรัฐยะไข่เทียบเคียงกับกรณีของมลายูมุสลิมในจังหวัดชายแดนใต้ แม้ว่าเมียนมาและไทยเป็นประเทศที่มีผู้นับถือศาสนาพุทธนิกายเถรวาทเป็นชนส่วนใหญ่ แต่ผลลัพธ์ของความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างรัฐและมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อยของทั้งสองประเทศก็มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างชัดเจน กล่าวคือ ในกรณีของโรฮีนจาปรากฏความรุนแรงสุดโต่ง ส่วนในกรณีของมลายูมุสลิมเกิดความรุนแรงต่ำที่กระทำโดยรัฐ นัยยะของการเทียบเคียงของทั้งสองกรณีคือการค้นหาปัจจัยที่ทำให้เกิดและไม่เกิดความรุนแรงที่กระทำโดยรัฐต่อชนกลุ่มน้อยมุสลิม ผลการศึกษาพบว่าปัจจัยสำคัญที่ทำให้ทั้งสองกรณีแตกต่างกันคือ ‘เงื่อนไขไตรลักษณ์’ ซึ่งประกอบด้วยมุมมองของรัฐต่อมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อย อิทธิพลของขบวนการพุทธชาตินิยม และความอ่อนแอของมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อย ฉะนั้น เมื่อรัฐมีมุมมองที่ปิดกั้นต่อชนกลุ่มน้อยประกอบกับขบวนการพุทธชาตินิยมมีอิทธิพลสูงและสถานะของมุสลิมชนกลุ่มน้อยมีความอ่อนแอแล้ว โอกาสที่จะเกิดการใช้ความรุนแรงสุดโต่งก็มีสูงตามไปด้วย ด้วยเหตุนี้ ผู้วิจัยเสนอว่าการปรากฏหรือไม่ปรากฏของเงื่อนไขไตรลักษณ์สามารถใช้เป็นเครื่องมือในการเฝ้าระวังการใช้ความรุนแรงสุดโต่งที่กระทำโดยรัฐต่อมลายูมุสลิมในประเทศไทย และต่อชนกลุ่มน้อยทางศาสนาและชาติพันธุ์ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้

บทความนี้ต้องการวิเคราะห์อำนาจทางการเมืองของทหารไทยนับตั้งแต่การรัฐประหารในปี พ.ศ. 2490 จนถึง 2557 ด้วยมโนทัศน์รัฐเสนานุภาพ (praetorianism) โดยพิจารณาการพยายามสถาปนาอำนาจของทหารผ่านระบบกฎหมาย การใช้อำนาจบริหารประเทศ และอำนาจเหนือกิจการความมั่นคงภายใน โดยอำนาจของกองทัพในแต่ละยุคสมัยมีระดับที่แตกต่างกัน การปกป้องสถาบันกษัตริย์มีความสำคัญสูงสุดสำหรับรัฐเสนานุภาพไทย ทั้งในแง่ที่ “ระบอบประชาธิปไตยอันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข” เป็นทั้งอุดมการณ์ พันธกิจ และเป็นแหล่งอ้างอิงความชอบธรรมของกองทัพ การสร้างรัฐเสนานุภาพไทยเกิดจากความร่วมมือกันระหว่างกองทัพกับพันธมิตรในเครือข่ายรอยัลลิสต์ รัฐเสนานุภาพไทยสามารถผลักดันนโยบายการพัฒนาไปในทิศทางที่ต้องการ ขยายอำนาจหน้าที่ของทหารในปัญหาความมั่นคงภายในออกไปอย่างกว้างขวาง จำกัดอำนาจพลเรือนเหนือกิจการภายในของกองทัพ พร้อม ๆ กับทำให้ประชาธิปไตยแบบรัฐสภาอ่อนแอลง ประการสำคัญ นับตั้งแต่การรัฐประหาร พ.ศ. 2490 กลไกอำนาจของกองทัพได้ถูกสถาปนาลงสู่โครงสร้างส่วนบนของอำนาจ  ทำให้กองทัพสามารถบ่อนเซาะเสถียรภาพของรัฐบาลจากการเลือกตั้งได้อย่างง่ายดาย ดังเช่นที่เกิดขึ้นกับรัฐบาลพลเรือนหลังการรัฐประหารในปี พ.ศ. 2549

วัตถุประสงค์ของบทความนี้คือเพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์กรอบความคิดสามเหลี่ยมเหล็กที่ถูกมักใช้อธิบายพลวัตเศรษฐกิจการเมืองของญี่ปุ่น แต่ยังขาดการผนวกมาวิเคราะห์ร่วมกับกระบวนการกำหนดนโยบายต่างประเทศของญี่ปุ่น บทความนี้เลือกเอานโยบายต่างประเทศญี่ปุ่นที่มีต่อการพัฒนาอนุภูมิภาคลุ่มแม่น้ำโขงด้านการขนส่งระหว่างประเทศมาเป็นกรณีศึกษา เนื่องจากอนุภูมิภาคลุ่มแม่น้ำโขงเป็นพื้นที่ที่มีการลงทุนจากบริษัทเอกชนญี่ปุ่นอยู่จำนวนมาก หน่วยงานราชการและเอกชนของญี่ปุ่นได้แสดงความต้องการการพัฒนาการเชื่อมโยงในอนุภูมิภาคลุ่มแม่น้ำโขงไปยังกลไกและหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องหลายวิธีการ ดังนั้นการศึกษาการแสดงความต้องการ และความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างนักการเมืองพรรคเสรีนิยมประชาธิปไตย (LDP) หน่วยงานราชการ และหน่วยงานธุรกิจจะช่วยทบทวนกรอบความคิดสามเหลี่ยมเหล็กว่ายังมีความสามารถในการอธิบายพลวัตทางเศรษฐกิจการเมืองญี่ปุ่นได้อย่างไร และเป็นการผนวกเอาการวิเคราะห์สามเหลี่ยมเหล็กและการกำหนดนโยบายต่างประเทศญี่ปุ่นเข้าด้วยกัน เพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงความเป็นพหุนิยม (pluralism) ของการกำหนดนโยบายต่างประเทศญี่ปุ่น

วัตถุประสงค์หลักของบทความวิจัยมุ่งอภิปรายการใช้ภาพเล่าเรื่องเพื่อเป็นเสียงสะท้อนผ่านการสื่อสารที่สามารถมองเห็นในชุมชนท้องถิ่นโดยคนในชุมชนเป็นผู้เล่าและสะท้อนเสียงส่วนลึกที่สุดในการแก้ไขปัญหาที่ดินในอุทยานแห่งชาติทับลาน อนึ่ง ผู้เข้าร่วมในการศึกษามีจำนวน 6  คน จาก18 คนในงานวิจัยเพื่อร่วมในการวิจัยภาพถ่ายเล่าเรื่อง ได้แก่ ชาวบ้าน เอ็นจีโอ และพระนักพัฒนาในตำบลไทยสามัคคี ซึ่งประโยชน์จากการใช้ภาพถ่ายเล่าเรื่องจะช่วยบันทึกเรื่องราว สะท้อนแง่มุม และแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรู้ ถือเป็นประจักษ์พยานในการศึกษาปัญหาที่ดิน อีกทั้งช่วยพัฒนาความสามารถของพลเมืองในการถกแถลงสาธารณะโดยใช้ภาพถ่าย ดังนั้นการศึกษานี้นำมาสู่การจุดประกายให้เห็นถึงบทบาทของการใช้ภาพเล่าเรื่องว่าเป็นวิธีการในการเข้าถึงแก่นแท้ในความรู้สึกเชิงศีลธรรมของประชาธิปไตยแบบปรึกษาหารือผ่านมุมมองของประชาชนในการพัฒนาชุมชนร่วมกันและเข้าถึงผู้กำหนดนโยบาย ทั้งนี้การนำผลงานวิจัยไปใช้เน้นเพื่อการพัฒนานโยบายสาธารณะและการเติมเต็มการศึกษาประชาธิปไตยแบบปรึกษาหารือในการจัดการปัญหาความขัดแย้งเรื่องที่ดิน
