A Pilot Study To Determine Gender Differences In The Detection Of Deception: Accuracy, Cues, And Skepticism, Randal B. Jarvis Jan 2005

A Pilot Study To Determine Gender Differences In The Detection Of Deception: Accuracy, Cues, And Skepticism, Randal B. Jarvis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

How accurately people use verbal and nonverbal cues to detect deception appears to be a function of a skeptical orientation toward the truthfulness of the subject. In previous studies, some differences in gender and the detection of deception are cited, but most studies are inconclusive about whether such differences exist. In the present study, university students are asked to judge brief interviews of suspects in a mock crime criminal investigation. Suspects are either "guilty" or "not guilty" in the mock crime scenario. "Guilty" suspects include two persons who are present at the time of the mock crime. A third person, …

The Effects Of Family Size On The Development Of Delinquency, Tasha Deleeuw Gilbert Jan 2005

The Effects Of Family Size On The Development Of Delinquency, Tasha Deleeuw Gilbert

Theses Digitization Project

This proposed study used a pre-existing data set, which is a longitudinal study of children born between 1959 to 1962. The sample consists of 987 "high risk" black children whose mothers were participating in the Collaborative Perinatal Project at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Findings demonstrate that family size is more important in predicting delinquency than previously thought.

Trafficking In Women: International Sex Services, Joseph Morgan Wilcox Jan 2005

Trafficking In Women: International Sex Services, Joseph Morgan Wilcox

Theses Digitization Project

This research looks to identify precursors to women becoming involved in trafficking for prostitution and/or sexual services in the United States. The failure to find patterns or trends regarding why women are trafficked or what types of women are trafficked most often, helps dispel some myths regarding the stereotypical victim of trafficking.

Justice Studies Faculty Publications

Special events offer the potential for considerable threats to public safety. Perhaps no other special event rivals the Olympic Games in scope, duration, and potential for threat to communities, participants, and dignitaries. This paper reports on the results of a study of safety and security at the Salt Lake Olympic Games by a team of researchers with wide-ranging access to operations, personnel and documents from the security effort at the 2002 Winter Games. This paper focuses on three specific areas: changing definitions of safety and security during the Games; the development and maintenance of organizational structures and interaction; and lessons …

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design: Crime Free Multi Housing In Arlington, Texas, David Joseph Jusiewicz Jan 2005

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design: Crime Free Multi Housing In Arlington, Texas, David Joseph Jusiewicz

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

The purpose of this study is to measure and compare calls for service at the apartment communities participating in the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program in the belief that a reduction in calls for service should translate to a reduction in crime. The review of the existing data is a cross-sectional, pre/post study of secondary data using calls for service. This method is preferred as it will represent the actual number of calls handled at each surveyed apartment community. Therefore, the conclusions provided with this data are not based on a complex statistical manipulation rather it provides a snap shot and …

Evaluating The Implementation Of Indiana Area ‘Communities That Care’, David Myers, Michael Arter

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

‘Communities That Care’ (CTC) is a research-based operating system designed to help communities identify and reduce risk factors, enhance protective factors, and prevent a number of adolescent problem behaviors, including delinquency, violence, substance abuse, school drop-out, and teen pregnancy. Indiana, PA, is one of approximately 125 communities throughout Pennsylvania that have chosen to use the CTC approach to promote the positive development of children and youth in the local area. This paper presents an initial review of Indiana Area CTC, in terms of the planning and implementation efforts that have taken place during the past five years.

Criminal Prosecution And Civil Remedies For Victims Of Sexual Offenses: Amendment Of The Rape Shield Law, Carol E. Jordan, Elizabeth S. Hughes, Mary Jo Gleason

Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women Publications

In 2003, the Kentucky Supreme Court adopted the amended KRS 412, effectively making the language of KRE 412 consistent with the analogous Federal Rule of Evidence 412. Now, as in federal court, the provisions of the Rape Shield Law apply in both criminal and civil cases to govern when and how evidence of a victim's alleged sexual behavior or sexual predisposition may be introduced. The article describes the intent of the original Rape Shield Law and the implications of its amended version in both civil and criminal cases.

Minority Threat And Police Strength From 1980 To 2000: A Fixed-Effects Analysis Of Nonlinear And Interactive Effects In Large U.S. Cities, Stephanie L. Kent, David Jacobs Jan 2005

Minority Threat And Police Strength From 1980 To 2000: A Fixed-Effects Analysis Of Nonlinear And Interactive Effects In Large U.S. Cities, Stephanie L. Kent, David Jacobs

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Many studies have assessed threat theory by investigating the relationships between the size of minority populations and police strength. Yet these investigations analyzed older data with cross-sectional designs. This study uses a fixed-effects panel design to detect nonlinear and interactive relationships between minority presence and the per capita number of police in large U.S. cities in the last three census years. The findings show that the relationship between racial threat and the population-corrected number of police officers has recently become considerably stronger. In accord with theoretically based expectations, tests for interactions show that segregated cities with larger African American populations …
