A fines del siglo 18, Vandelli y Jovellanos retornan a las reformas pombalinas y borbónicas de Portugal y España, respectivamente, para esbozar un proyecto que complete la modernización. Buscaban encarar la Modernidad de la Europa de Norte examinando la trayectoria cultural ibérica para diseñar su propia Modernidad. Esta Modernidad debía estar organizada en torno a la relación entre ética y economía sobre un programa cuya fortaleza surgía del mundo rural. Bajo esta perspectiva, ambos autores le dan forma a una narrativa cultural que integra tecnología, control demográfico y agricultura en función de un proyecto de modernización de la península ibérica. …

Si “Alocución a la Poesía” (1823) de Andrés Bello era un llamado a dejar Europa, cruzar el Atlántico y fundar la historicidad del Nuevo Mundo, “La agricultura de la Zona Tórrida” (1826) sería su factura programática. This essay looks at the Catholic Church and political mediation in the Dominican Republic during the 1980's and 1990's. It opens with a review of the Latin American context regarding the transition to democracy, the debt crisis, and the church's response to the new political reality. It draws some comparisons from Bolivia, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala, where the church played an important role mediating political conflicts. La producción literaria de Andrea Maturana (Chile, 1969) no es ajena a dichos fenómenos. The Dominican Republic played a major role in the early history of NACLA, and it is therefore fitting that the country be re-examined in one of NACLA's thirtieth anniversary issues. It was largely in response to the 1965 U.S. invasion and occupation of the island that a group of academics, clergy and radical activists organized a 1966 conference called the North American Congress on Latin America. The "congress" stayed together beyond the conference, and in February, 1967, began publishing the NACLA Newsletter, which evolved into today's NACLA Report on the Americas.

Merengue—the quintessential Dominican dance music—has a long and complex history, both on the island and in the large immigrant community in New York City. In this ambitious work, Paul Austerlitz unravels the African and Iberian roots of merengue and traces its growth under dictator Rafael Trujillo and its renewed popularity as an international music.

Using extensive interviews as well as written commentaries, Austerlitz examines the historical and contemporary contexts in which merengue is performed and danced, its symbolic significance, its social functions, and its musical and choreographic structures. The Uses Of Maya Structures: A Study Of Architecture And Artifact Distribution At Sepulturas, Copan, Honduras, Julia A. Hendon

This dissertation presents a compositional analysis of the architecture and a distributional analysis of the associated artifacts resulting from excavation of some ninety buildings dating from the Late to Terminal Classic Period at the Maya site of Copan, Honduras. The study of all artifacts recovered from primary contexts, both in situ and redeposited, focuses first on a determination of their function, second on an analysis of their distribution within the site, and third on their associations with one another in order to identify the kinds of activities carried out at various locations.
