International acquisitions are extremely difficult to maneuver and success is far from guaranteed. Navigating through financial statements is one thing, but trying to link together two or more geographically and culturally diverse workforces is an entirely another thing. This study analyzes fourteen employee interviews from four different companies involved in international acquisitions within the last ten years. It develops a comprehensive comparison of companies looking to partially integrate through hands-off management or fully integrate through synergistic collaboration of workforces. Transiting to a quarterly release, the Customer Satisfaction Index of Singapore (CSISG) has completed its first round of measurement for the Retail and Info-Communications sectors. Annually, CSISG currently measures 8 key economic sectors of Singapore with company, sub-sector, and sector results of two economic sectors released each quarter. The national score for 2010 will be updated in January 2011. CSISG company scores are generated based on face-to-face interviews with companies’ customers after the consumption of their products and services. Company scores in a sub-sector are then aggregated up in proportion to their revenue contributions to derive each sub-sector score. Similarly, …

Global migration patterns increasingly challenge the historical relationships between Western powers and their former colonies. Traditional conceptions of who belongs where have weakened, and language has become a heated topic of debate. This thesis explores how national language policies both reflect and inflect the national identities of the one-time colonizer and colonized. Using studies of language politics in both Tunisia's independence and France's responses to North African immigration, I demonstrate that despite the half century that has passed since France occupied North Africa, the colonial experience remains influential on both sides.

Islam And Human Rights: Reimagining A Space For Dialogue Between Islamism And Secularism In Pakistan, Mishal Khan

This thesis examines the prospects for a conversation between Islam and human rights. The basic question addressed is: where does the Islamic tradition fit in a secular discourse that inherently rejects religious doctrine? The case study of Pakistan focuses on the role of Islam in politics, and how secular human rights NGOs insert themselves in a polarized national debate about Islam in political life. What emerges is a statement of the importance of "patient and complex intellectual labor" within the Islamic tradition, showing how reformulating our understanding of secularism and the Islamic state is crucial for opening up a space …

This paper discusses the present characteristics of men and women’s expected roles in Tunisian society and family during and after marriage. The relationship between the Personal Status Code’s laws and Tunisian society’s general mentality were studied to see how they interacted to create men and women’s reputations and statuses before and after divorce. Four interviews were conducted with two categories of marriages considered: those with children and those without children. Each category was represented by a male and female divorcé living in the northern suburbs of Tunis, who were each asked to speak of their marriage and divorce process. Each …

This uprising paralyzed the nation and brought the newly politicized ethnicity of indigenous people as political actors to national attention. This led to an increasingly contentious struggle for power, related to the historical verticality of classes based upon ethnicity. But why did ethnicity now become politicized in such an explosive manner and how is this politicized identity formed?

Over the past decade, Iraq has experienced a tremendous amount of change from once being a dictatorial regime to becoming a new and developing democracy. Iraq is dominantly composed of three main and distinct groups known as the Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds. This paper attempts examine whether or not, Iraqi individuals see themselves first and foremost as Iraqis or as being Muslims first. There has been little research conducted that specifically examines the relationship between nationalism and ethnic identity in Iraq. Bangladesh has sent more than 6.7 million workers to over 140 countries during a period of more than three decades since the mid-1970s. Most of these workers temporarily migrated to work in Middle East and Southeast Asia. This mass movement of temporary migrant workers has, to some extent, eased unemployment pressures on the over-burdened labor market in this highly populated country. More importantly, the remittance transfers received from these migrant workers have reached a phenomenal level of over 10 billion US dollars in 2009, approximately 12 percent of GDP in Bangladesh. Logistics & Supply Chain Management: Faculty Presentations (1998-2020)

This paper studies the effects of the SARS outbreak on air travel between the US and three destinations; China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. ARIMA models with interventions are used to estimate the timing, depth and shape of SARS impact on international air travel. Links between empirical findings and a conceptual framework for analyzing the life cycle of a crisis are established. The conceptual framework uses situational choice and governmental public relations differences by location to explain the response patterns to the crises. Systematic empirical research has yet to explain how national parties join political groups in the European Parliament. This article first demonstrates, using original empirical measures from expert surveys of party positions, that EP party groups consist of national parties sharing similar policy positions. Secondly, using Bayesian/MCMC methods, the paper estimates the policy determinants of group affiliation using a (conditional) multinomial logit model to explain that party group choice is largely driven by policy congruence. Finally, predictions from the model identify national parties not in their ideally congruent EP groups. The findings suggest that the organization of and switching between EP …

Islamic parties have won parliamentary elections in several countries in recent years, leading some observers to speculate that Muslims vote Islamic whenever they are given the chance. However, a review of every parliamentary election in Muslim societies over the past 40 years shows that Islamic parties often compete and rarely win—and the freer the election, the worse these parties perform. In addition, an unprecedented collection of Islamic party platforms shows that Islamic parties have transformed since the 1980s, publicly endorsing democracy and women's rights and de-emphasizing shari'a and jihad.
