Vegetation Dynamics Of Three Tallgrass Prairie Sites, Jon K. Piper, Mark C. Gernes Jan 1989

Vegetation Dynamics Of Three Tallgrass Prairie Sites, Jon K. Piper, Mark C. Gernes

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

As part of research to develop a sustainable agriculture that incorporates many aspects of the North American Prairie, I) the seasonal phytomass levels supportable by native prairie and 2) how plant taxa shift in temporal importance within the community were examined. This report summarizes the first two years of a study documenting community patterns on three tallgrass prairie sites in Saline County, Kansas that differ in soil type and annual productivity. Average August phytomass at the three sites ranged from 284 to 682 g/m2 in 1986 and from 377 to 1077 g/m2 in 1987. Diversity declined with standing …

Thematic Mapper Digital Data For Predicting Aboveground Tallgrass Prairie Biomass, John M. Briggs, Duane Nellis Jan 1989

Thematic Mapper Digital Data For Predicting Aboveground Tallgrass Prairie Biomass, John M. Briggs, Duane Nellis

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Landsat thematic mapper digital data was found to offer an excellent potential for regular monitoring of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem by providing estimates of aboveground biomass production. Data from seven channels of a May thematic mapper scene were analyzed individually and in various combinations using stepwise regression in Statistical Analysis System (SAS). These procedures were used to determine the most appropriate multiple regression equation for estimating production of 1) total live aboveground biomass, 2) grasses, 3) forbs, 4) previous years dead, and 5) current years dead. Regression equations were based on satellite-derived estimates relative to ground level biomass values for …

Tallgrass Prairie Remnants Of Eastern Nebraska, Judith F. Boettcher, Thomas B. Bragg Jan 1989

Tallgrass Prairie Remnants Of Eastern Nebraska, Judith F. Boettcher, Thomas B. Bragg

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Ten eastern Nebraska tallgrass prairie remnants were evaluated up to four times during the 1979 growing season to assess vegetative composition and the effects of mowing, topographic and size differences, and season of evaluation. Frequent mowing resulted in a reduced canopy cover of some species, such as big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) (21% lower with frequent mowing), but increased cover of others, particularly the introduced species smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss. subsp. inermis) (35% higher cover with frequent mowing). In addition, frequent mowing resulted in a higher proportion of disturbance species. Comparing the time of mowing, canopy …

Species Composition Of Old Settler Silt -Loam Prairies, Robert F. Betz, Herbert F. Lamp Jan 1989

Species Composition Of Old Settler Silt -Loam Prairies, Robert F. Betz, Herbert F. Lamp

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Over the course of a decade, studies were conducted throughout northern Illinois and northeastern Indiana to locate old settler cemeteries containing prairie vegetation and to determine their species composition. Of the 824 cemeteries investigated in 42 counties in northern Illinois and in 20 counties in northwestern Indiana, 150 contained some prairie species. Of the 44 cemeteries that had sufficient prairie species to warrant study, 29 were silt-loam prairies, 14 were sand and silt-loam savannas, and one was a sand prairie. A total of 180 species of prairie plants were found in the 29 silt-loam cemetery prairies, belonging to 43 different …

Remarks By The President At Swearing-In Ceremony Of Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you, Peter, and all the members of the Cabinet; the members of the United States Congress here; distinguished ambassadors and others. I've come over here today for the swearing-in of our Secretary. Clayton Yeutter is about to make an enduring commitment to this Department and I should acknowledge the fact that I think five of his predecessors are here today -- Democrats and Republicans which I think gives him an extraordinarily good send-off. There's a difference, you know, between involvement and commitment. You all know it. Remember the old farmer making eggs and bacon. The chicken is …

An Empirical Bayes Approach To Analyzing Recurring Animal Surveys, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1989

An Empirical Bayes Approach To Analyzing Recurring Animal Surveys, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Recurring estimates of the size of animal populations are often required by biologists or wildlife managers. Because of cost or other constraints, estimates frequently lack the accuracy desired but cannot readily be improved by additional sampling. This report proposes a statistical method employing empirical Bayes (EB) estimators as alternatives to those customarily used to estimate population size, and evaluates them by a subsampling experiment on waterfowl surveys. EB estimates, especially a simple limited-translation version, were more accurate and provided shorter confidence intervals with greater coverage probabilities than customary estimates.

Ingestion Of Lead Shot And Aluminum Bands By Bald Eagles During Winter In Nebraska, Gary Lingle, Gary Krapu Jun 1988

Ingestion Of Lead Shot And Aluminum Bands By Bald Eagles During Winter In Nebraska, Gary Lingle, Gary Krapu

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalusis) a common winter resident along the Platte and North Platte rivers in southcentral Nebraska. Waterfowl are a major food of eagles during periods when fish are not readily available (Lingle and Krapu 1986). Eating ducks and geese can make eagles susceptible to lead poisoning, a significant cause of mortality of Bald Eagles in North America (Kaiser et al. 1980). Eagles ingest lead shot from waterfowl by eating shot imbedded in tissues or as part of the contents of digestive tracts. In this paper we describe the incidence of lead shot and Fish and …

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Thank you very much Chancellor Massengale. It's nice to be home. First of all to the graduates, I say to you, savor this day. You've earned it. You've had four great years here at the University of Nebraska. They should have been rewarding years, and I hope you'll imprint the good times indelibly in your minds. But next week--not today, not tomorrow--sit back and be a bit introspective about what these four years have meant to you.

Duck Nest Success In The Prairie Pothole Region, Albert T. Klett, Terry L. Shaffer, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1988

Duck Nest Success In The Prairie Pothole Region, Albert T. Klett, Terry L. Shaffer, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We estimated nest success of mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), gadwall (A. strepera), blue-winged teal (A. discors), northern shoveler (A. clypeata), and northern pintail (A. acuta) for 5 regions in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota, for 1-3 periods between 1966 and 1984, and for 8 habitat classes. We obtained composite estimates of nest success for regions and periods by weighting each habitat proportional to the number of nest initiations. The distribution of nest initiations was derived from estimates of breeding populations, preferences of species for nesting habitats, and availability of habitats. …

The Influence Of Diet Quality On Clutch Size And Laying Pattern In Mallards, Jan Eldridge, Gary Krapu Jan 1988

The Influence Of Diet Quality On Clutch Size And Laying Pattern In Mallards, Jan Eldridge, Gary Krapu

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We measured the effect of diet quality on variation in the seasonal pattern of Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) reproduction. Twenty wild-strain hens, consisting of 10 sibling pairs, were maintained in captivity. One sib of each pair was fed an enriched diet, and the other was fed wheat. The wheat diet resulted in reduced clutch size, egg size, laying rate, number of nesting attempts, and total eggs laid. Diet did not affect laying initiation, duration, or the seasonal pattern of change in clutch and egg size with each renest. We believe the variation and pattern observed are adaptations to a …

Opening Statement Uruguay Round Mid-Term Review Montreal, Canada, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Mr. Chairman, fellow delegates. It has been two years since we met in Punta del Este, two years since leaders from around the world -- representing nations in all stages of economic development -- agreed to launch the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations. since then, our negotiators have been hard at work. They deserve not only credit, but also continuing encouragement. For what came out of the meeting in Punta del Este in September of 1986 was the most comprehensive and ambitious negotiating agenda ever put before the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

Review Of The West Of The Imagination, Robert Thacker Jan 1988

Review Of The West Of The Imagination, Robert Thacker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This is--in every meaning of the word-a wonderful book. Historian William H. Goetzmann, the author ofExploration and Empire, Karl Boomer's America, and New Lands, New Men has collaborated with his art historian son, William N. Goetzmann, to produce this volume, a companion to the Public Broadcasting System series of the same name. Focused on the illustrators, painters, and photographers of the American West, it offers a stunning overview of their histories, actions, and, most especially, their images. The reader, like the artist;s .and the Goetzmanns themselves, is awed by the felt pull of the West on the imagination; …

Rethinking The Farm Revolt Of The 1930s, William C. Pratt Jan 1988

Rethinking The Farm Revolt Of The 1930s, William C. Pratt

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

T he northern Plains witnessed the last great farm revolt in its history during the 1930s, when a flood of protest spilled across the region, fed by the springs of hard times and earlier insurgencies. The countryside, for one last moment, forced itself upon the rest of the country and demanded attention for its plight. After a period of high visibility, these efforts receded in the wake of New Deal programs that seemingly undercut the rural revolt. Many of the protesters arrived at an accommodation with the new regime, accepting "half-aloaf now" in terms of wheat allotment checks and refinanced …

Review Of Soldiers West: Biographies From The Military Frontier, Peter Maslowski Jan 1988

Review Of Soldiers West: Biographies From The Military Frontier, Peter Maslowski

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The American West and the Old Army's role in it remain of enduring interest. For example, Edward M. Coffman's The Old Army: A Portrait of the American Army in Peacetime, 1784-1898 (1986) is a collective study of the officers and enlisted men and their dependents. Now, as an unintentional but superb companion piece, Soldiers West examines individual officers who were influential in exploring, policing, and developing the frontier. Two important themes emerge from these mini-biographies. First, as military historians have long recognized, the army played a vital role in national development. Second, and less well understood but especially fascinating, was …

Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool Jan 1988

Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Early anthropological studies addressed the economic position of women as one component of women's "status"-a construct used to examine a variety of gender-based social distinctions. These distinctions were conceptualized as the opposing domains of "domestic" and "public." The association of women with the domestic domain was viewed as the critical factor in understanding asymmetrical relations of power and authority. Since status has generally been defined in terms of participation in the public, economic, and political sectors dominated by men, anthropologists have proposed alternatives to the strict association of power with public roles. They used the term "influence" to mean the …

Review Of Patterns Of Life, Patterns Of Art: The Rahr Collection Of Native American Art., David Woodley

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Patterns of Life, Patterns of Art presents the Native American Collection of Guido R. Rahr, a gift to the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College. The catalogue consists of 32 full color illustrations, as well as listing and describing 182 collection items. Of the objects illustrated, only a few are artistic masterpieces, but all the objects will interest students of Native American material culture. The casual reader may find the captions under some illustrations confusing, and in at least one instance the captions are inverted (p. 54, catalogue 79, 80). In her essay, Barbara A. Hail takes on the …

Review Of Helen Hunt Jackson, Valerie Sherer Mathes

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Helen Hunt Jackson, considered by Emerson "the greatest American woman poet," was author of more that thirty books and numerous newspaper pieces and articles. Virtually forgotten today, she is ironically the subject of two short biographies written last year, although neither eclipses the one written in 1939 by Ruth Odell.

Review Of Little Crow: Spokesman For The Sioux, Herbert T. Hoover Jan 1988

Review Of Little Crow: Spokesman For The Sioux, Herbert T. Hoover

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This readable narrative chronicles the life of the eastern Sioux leader whose name has been associated with the Minnesota Sioux War for a role he accepted reluctantly. A genealogy and some· background information explain why he assumed a moderate posture as non-Indians flocked into southern Minnesota during the 1850s. Resentment changed to bitterness around him as eastern Sioux people exchanged some 10,000,000 acres for a narrow strip of land along the upper St. Peter's River that could not sustain them. When finally they took up arms in the early 186Os, Little Crow became their symbol of resistance. At length, more …

Review Of The Paintings Of George Caleb Bingham: A Catalogue Raisonne., Stephen C. Behrendt Jan 1988

Review Of The Paintings Of George Caleb Bingham: A Catalogue Raisonne., Stephen C. Behrendt

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The appearance of this volume by E. Maurice Bloch, the dean of Bingham studies, is a most significant event. Superseding Bloch's preliminary catalogue of 1967, this impressive new volume constitutes the definitive catalogue of Bingham's paintings. With more than 350 illustrations, including 23 in color, it provides a guide to both Bingham's familiar works and his lesser-known subjects, documenting the artist's development both as portraitist and as recorder of Western American subject matter. An insightful introductory essay of twenty-eight large, double-column pages presents Bingham .as man and artist, exploring the events and influences that shaped his art and effectively locating …
