The Impact Of Cultural Patterns On Cognition And Intention In Singapore, Chin Tiong Tan, John U. Farley

Ethnicity of models used in advertisements and the advertised product's country of origin are manipulated experimentally to study how attitudes toward advertising and products lead to behavioral intention. A sample of Singaporean students' traditional Eastern values about family and conformity are also examined. Patterns of results for three products are consistent with theoretical predictions of cognitive processes, and attitude-intention links appear stronger than do those in similar tests in the West. Culture has mixed effect.

Economic relations between the countries of ASEAN and Australia have developed rapidly in the past 25 years. All countries in the region share a powerful interest in the maintenance of a liberal international trading environment. There is also confineable scope for an expanded. mutually beneficial bilateral relationship if a range of barriers to commercial contact are removed. Public policy reforms, on a non-discriminatory basis are the key to such a relationship.

Problem. The Seventh-day Adventist denomination has developed a school system to serve theindividual needs of its members and general needs of the church. From 1972 to 1986, the educational work of the Adventist church in Taiwan has declined steadily. This study was to investigate the attitudes of church members toward the support of Adventist education on relation to demographic and personal variables.

Method. The Adventist Christian Education Attitude Scale measured (1) demographic characteristics; (2) 59 attitude statements, arranged in five scales, identified by factor analysis; and (3) the 13 reasons why church members did not attend or send their youth …

This article deals with some problematic aspects of the general reception of English law in Singapore. It examines, first, the concept of the 'cut-off' date for statutes and the common law. The second substantive part deals with the concepts of suitability and modification, analysing their theoretical cogency as well as their application in the local context. The third and final part of the article examines the relationship between reception and stare decisis, indicating and examining potential contradictions as well as other allied issues.

Examines the mental images Westerners formed of their subjective perceptions of a unique section of the earth's surface - the Malay world - and in a particular time-frame - the high colonial period (circa 1870 to 1940). Illustrates how the perceptions give rise to a definition of the region as an entity with an identity, spirit and personality internal to itself.

The Soviet Union attacked- and defeated Japanese forces in Northeast Asia in the final days of the Second World War, and 2,100,000 Japanese soldiers and civilians suddenly fell into the hands of the Red Army. This thesis examines the experiences of Japanese in Soviet custody, efforts to obtain their release, and their eventual return to Japan. Repatriation of civilians from Soviet-controlled areas was slow, and military personnel were taken to the USSR for use as forced labor for several years. The Soviets conducted an intensive Marxist-Leninist indoctrination program for prisoners of war, and a professed acceptance of communism was a …

Hermeneutics, as a philosophical enterprise, is not new; it can be traced back at least to Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) and Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911).1 Yet hermeneutics did not reach its philosophical maturity and acquire the worldwide recognition that it deserves until Hans-Georg Gadamer published his magnum opus, Truth and Method, in 1960.2 Here, with the help of Heidegger, hermeneutics is transformed from a general methodology of the "human sciences" (Geisteswissenschaften) into a full-fledged "practical" philo- sophy.3 With Gadamer, as we shall see, hermeneutics can no longer be under- stood as merely a theory of interpretation; rather, it is to be seen …

The Korean War was a benchmark in the modern history of Japan. It became a catalyst for political action, and the fountainhead of the "economic miracle" that raised Japan once again to a prominent position among nations. The Korean War helped solve many political problems, including the tricky question of a peace treaty. It confirmed Japan's commitment to a no-war constitution. It also permitted the Japanese government to relax the restrictions imposed by occupation authorities.
