Asian Review

The last decade has seen an explosion of popular movements in Thailand. Although many share characteristics with "new social movements" (identity issues, networking), they also resemble "old" movements in their class base and political concerns. Because Thailand had no mass nationalist or revolutionary movement, these movements are the first political assertion by the "little people". Many campaigns concern environmental destruction and competition over natural resources. Women have a large role, in contrast to the male domination of formal politics. Many issues are class-based but expressed in ways which facilitate cross-class alliances.

After the student uprising in 1973, Thai trade unions adopted social unionism. They allied with other forces, especially students, and promoted issues of benefit to other social classes. This phase ended with the coup of 1976. When union activity again became possible in the 1980s, the unions turned to economic unionism. They campaigned on issues of specific worker benefit (wages, social security), but allowed their alliances to decay, and forfeited broad support. In the 1990s, female workers again forged broad social alliances to fight campaigns on issues of specific female interest (maternity leave, occupational health). Because of its weakness, the …

The essay is based on a survey of organizational change management practices in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore which was conducted by the authors between 1999 - 2001 in collaboration with the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI). The study was aimed at examining the adaptability and change readiness of Singapore’s SMEs and their owners vis-à-vis the rapidly changing external business environment, as exemplified by the process of economic globalization, intense competition, technology development and the Asian crisis. This study provides an extension to the Charismatic Leadership theories by delineating the roles of rhetoric content: in frame alignment and trust building. Propositions were developed from past literature on the rhetorical behaviors of Charismatic Leadership and the interpersonal trust literature. An empirical study was then conducted to test the propositions developed and it was found that Mr. Lee Kuan Yew use the Singapore National Day Rally speeches in limited ways to align frames and build trust.

In Cultural Studies, 'hybridity' is usually applied to cultures that have been influenced by another culture, resulting in a loss of identity, leading to a cultural mixture. An econometric analysis of the World Food Programme Civil Insecurity Baseline Survey (1998) and Cambodia Socio-Economic Survey (1999) data is undertaken to examine the role of education and literacy in explaining household expenditure, as hypothesized in human capital theory where education is an investment with returns in the form of income. Explanatory variables were selected from a large set of observed variables by a systematic procedure to avoid the bias arising from arbitrary model selection. We compare the cognitive processing of words written in alphabetic scripts with the cognitive processing of words written in logographic scripts. We suggest that the processing of words written in alphabetic scripts relies more heavily on the storage of--and the serial rehearsal properties of--short-term memory's phonological loop. In contrast, the processing of words written in logographic scripts relies more on the storage of--and the spatial-relational rehearsal properties of--visual short-term memory. A series of three experiments investigates implications of these processing differences within a single language, Korean, where words can be written in the alphabetic Hangul or in the logographic Han-cha. …

Most new product adoption models have focused on single-generation products. Only recently have researchers begun to focus on the importance of analyzing consumers' purchase demands in multi-generation products. This paper proposes a model that incorporates both initial and repeat purchases and allows for leap-frogging behavior for multi-generation technological products. Whereas most new product adoption models are based on aggregate market sales, the proposed model is estimated and validated on individual consumer data. Within a logistical modeling framework, the model combines a purchase incidence (buy/not buy) component and generation choice components for each time period. This study examines how the degree of capital-market integration of the East and South-East Asian (ESEA) economies varied over the period 1988–2000 following the deregulation of these markets. The deregulation process varied across the countries both in terms of intensity and timing. A greater degree of co-movements in stock prices is a reflection of greater stock-market integration. We employ Geweke’s (1982) measure of feedback for different pairs of markets. For each pair of markets, the Geweke measure shows how co-movements in daily returns of stock prices varied over time.
