Home As A Place Of Exhibition And Performance: Mayan Household Transformations In Guatemala, Walter E. Little Jan 2000

Home As A Place Of Exhibition And Performance: Mayan Household Transformations In Guatemala, Walter E. Little

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the town of San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Guatemala, has been incorporated into transnational movements of people, commodities, and ideas through tourism, development, and religious evangelism. The Kaqchikel Mayas living there have long looked outward from their community as they embraced, ignored, or criticized these global flows. Contemporary Kaqchikel Mayas have incorporated these global flows into the organization and maintenance of their households, while giving them a local interpretation. Some families have made their homes a place to enact their culture through exhibitions and performances for tourists. Such performances are indicative of the strategies …

Kenyan Women And The Harambee: Community Development Or Unpaid Work?, Anne Gathuo Jan 2000

Kenyan Women And The Harambee: Community Development Or Unpaid Work?, Anne Gathuo

Trotter Review

Since gaining independence from Britain in 1963, the Kenyan government has encouraged self-help activity, known as "harambee" which is aimed at supplementing government efforts in the provision of social services. The term harambee conjures positive images of community spirit and people pooling together for a common cause. Indeed, the term is synonymous to community development. The United Nations Report on Community Development and Economic Development defines community development as the process by which the efforts of the people themselves are combined with those of government authorities to improve the economic, social and cultural conditions of communities, to integrate these communities …

Responding To Poverty Through Community Development: The Role Of Women In South Africa, Junette Davids Jan 2000

Responding To Poverty Through Community Development: The Role Of Women In South Africa, Junette Davids

Trotter Review

The World Bank reported that during the past three decades the developing world has made enormous economic progress. This is illustrated in the rising trend for incomes and consumption: between 1965 and 1985 consumption per capita in the developing world went up by almost 70%. Midgley, also reported that developing countries have recorded high rates of economic growth, achieved high degrees of industrialization and made significant social progress. Given this scenario one would assume that poverty has also decreased markedly. However, even though some developing countries have recorded high rates of economic growth, achieved high degrees of industrialization, and made …

The Japanese civilization is among distinctive civilization in technology and domination in economical aspect. Destruction in World War II and limited resource is not obstruction for Japanese to raise and give the competition to the western countries, especially the United States of America (USA). This is because their leaders are stressing on the Japanese education. The Japanese had assimilated the other civilization into its own civilization to make it strong in various aspects like faith, religion ethics and morale. These various aspects were explicated with the original religion of the Japanese such as Shintoism, Buddhism and Confucianism that were originated …

Japan has achieved a high civilization comparable with the western civilization especially in terms of international, economic and political management. Therefore, the focus of this knowledge training is to study about how the bushido spirit plays its role as an element to form the characteristics of the Japanese people to the extend that they reach a high psychological level and good moral values which brings a unique aspect in Japanese civilization. The concept of bushido spirit consists of giving priorities to the moral and ethical values among the disciples such as loyalties to the leader, willing to sacrifice for honor, …

White Women, Black Revolutionaries: Sex And Politics In Four Novels By Nadine Gordimer, Nancy Topping Bazin Jan 2000

White Women, Black Revolutionaries: Sex And Politics In Four Novels By Nadine Gordimer, Nancy Topping Bazin

English Faculty Publications

As early as 1959, the white South African novelist, essayist, and short story writer Nadine Gordimer wrote an essay, "Where Do Whites Fit In?" As the black struggle for power intensified and finally achieved its primary goal of black majority rule in 1994, Gordimer continued to reflect upon this question. Her eighth novel, July's People (1981), is a psychological and political fable. It celebrates a white woman's readiness to reject the relationships and privileges that bind her to the white world and her readiness to embrace the new South Africa of an emancipated black majority. The novels written before July's …

The Social And Economic Status Of Eritrean Women: Advances And Reversals, Asgedet Stefanos Jan 2000

The Social And Economic Status Of Eritrean Women: Advances And Reversals, Asgedet Stefanos

Trotter Review

In assessing the post-independence status of women in Eritrea, I want to pose two questions. First, how did the leadership of the national liberation movement, the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF), embark on promoting women's emancipation, given the attitudes firmly rooted in the minds of both men and women that ran counter to the idea of an emancipated woman? Secondly, what changes were established in Eritrean women's public and personal lives during the national liberation struggle — in politics, economics, and the social realm?

This is an excerpt of the speech delivered by Asgedet Stefanos at the 20th Anniversary of …

Religion And Modernity: Ritual Transformations And The Reconstruction Of Space And Time, Chee Kiong Tong, Lily Kong Jan 2000

Religion And Modernity: Ritual Transformations And The Reconstruction Of Space And Time, Chee Kiong Tong, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we use the case of Chinese religion in Singapore to examine the relationships between religion and modernity, and between social processes, on the one hand, and spatial conceptions, forms and structures and temporal practices, on the other. Specifically, we look at how traditional Chinese rituals are being modified, reinterpreted and invented to fit with modern living. Such ritual transformations entail reconstructed notions of space and time. Through such transformations, modernity does not simply lead to the demise of religious beliefs and practices but allows for a continued role for religion in providing a meaning system for Chinese …

Church, State And Nation In Ukraine, Serhii Plokhy Oct 1999

Church, State And Nation In Ukraine, Serhii Plokhy

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Much of the current discussion concerning the future of independent Ukraine has centered on the issue of nation-building. Two models of the Ukrainian state, (1) national (the state of the ‘Ukrainian people’) and (2) multi-ethnic (the state of ‘the people of Ukraine’), usually serve as starting points for scholarly discussions.2 It is quite obvious that the future of church-state relations in Ukraine will depend heavily on the choices made by the newly independent state in its nationbuilding strategy. It is equally true that the religious policy of the government and the response to it on the part of organized religion …

Familiar Connections: A Personal Re/View Of Latino/A Identity, Gender And Class Issues In The Context Of The Labor Dispute Between Sprint And La Conexion Familiar, Roberto L. Corrada

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

I was asked to be an expert witness for Sprint Corporation in December 1995. I found out that the hearing was being held by the U.S. National Administrative Office because a Mexican labor union had filed a complaint pursuant to the NAFTA labor side accord. I prepared my testimony, I attended the hearing in San Francisco and testified. I began to realize the gravity of my mistake, however, when I sat down and listened to the testimony of the person who spoke after me. Her name was Dora Vogel. She was one of the Latinas who had been employed at …

The Life Of Aleksandr Men': Hagiography In The Making, Janet M. Wehrle Jun 1999

The Life Of Aleksandr Men': Hagiography In The Making, Janet M. Wehrle

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Hagiography is not an extinct genre in Russian literature, even though many believe that it was important in the history of early Russian literature but became irrelevant as Russian literature entered its modem period. The autobiography of priest A vvakum, written in the second half of the seventeenth century, is often considered to be the final work in the development of Russian hagiography. Russian spirituality has not died out, however, and holy men and women continue to display the same devotion to Christ that was admired in medieval saints. The biographies and memoirs of these modem "saints" retain some of …
