Using Suitability Modelling To Determine Wildfire Ignition Risk A Case Study Of The Adirondack State Park, Dakota James Bailey

The study area centers around a 6 million acre protected area in upstate New York known as the Adirondack State Park. Spatial data are gathered and manipulated, then input into the ArcGIS Pro suitability modeler tool to construct several wildfire ignition risk models, as well as a wildfire spread risk model. Upon comparing these ignition models, contextual conclusions are formed on areas of greatest ignition risk pertaining to the individual models. The wildfire ignition risk models are overlayed with the spread risk model, to assess which areas are most likely to facilitate initial ignition and subsequent spread. Ultimately, it appears …

Walking and cycling are health-conscious, environmentally friendly modes of transportation, yet very few American trips are accomplished using these methods. A major factor behind this is the fear of being involved in a crash with an automobile. From 2009-2019 there were over 5,200 automobile crashes involving either pedestrians or cyclists in Louisville/ Jefferson County, Kentucky. Researchers have found that these kinds of crashes exhibit spatiotemporal patterns in different cities across the globe. In response to global consumer demand for rare and exotic wildlife products, poaching of endangered species has become pervasive around the world (Eliason 1999). Despite the enactment of CITES, and other international efforts to protect vulnerable species from overexploitation, the global market for illegal wildlife products is estimated as high as $20-billion a year industry (Wyler 2008). Within important wildlife habitat sites, law enforcement struggle to curb rampant poaching that threatens the ultimate survival of many endangered species (Jachmann 2008; Rowcliffe 2004). While extensive research has been conducted on vulnerability and resilience with regard to hazards, very few studies have researched the resilience of homeless populations. The Gulf Coast region is densely populated and susceptible to natural and anthropogenic hazards. Climate change studies indicate that this region will experience an increase in severe and intense tropical cyclones[1], thereby increasing the risk of experiencing adverse impacts from future coastal hazards. While local government agencies in this region have policies in place to protect communities, these policies tend to exclude any action regarding the evacuation and safety of the homeless population.
