Comparison Of Pixel-Based Versus Object-Based Land Use/Land Cover Classificationmethodologies, N. D. Riggan Jr., Robert C. Weih Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) classification data have proven to be valuable assets for various governmental agencies, park managers, and natural resource managers. Traditional pixel-based classification methods have difficulty with high resolution imagery, resulting in a “salt and pepper” appearance. Newer object-based methods may prove to be more accurate. This study compared an object based classification procedure utilizing Feature Analyst© software with a traditional pixel-based methodology (supervised classification) when applied to medium-spatial resolution satellite imagery merged with high-spatial resolution aerial imagery. This study utilized two multi-spectral SPOT-5 satellite images, leaf-on and leaf-off, merged with a color infrared aerial image. Because of …

Using Gis To Model The Timbershed Of A Wood Based Manufacturing Facility, Robert Brewington, Richard A. Williams, Jeffery Earl
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A geographic information system (GIS) is an excellent tool for determining timber procurement zones. This study focuses on the procurement zones of two wood processing facilities in Arkansas, one in Fort Smith and one near Menifee. Since the two mills began operation in 1995, there have been questions about the long-term effect on the hardwood timber resource of the region. The "wood basket" for these mills must first be determined before their effects can be studied. Transportation from the harvest site to the primary processing facility accounts for a large portion of the total mill-delivered cost for raw material and …

Field Interpretation Of Latitude And Longitude In Arkansas: A Portable Coordinate Projection, William R. Teague
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Two- and three-dimensional coordinate systems are fundamental to most quantitative mapping applications. The Geodetic, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM),and State Plane systems have traditional roles in various science, surveying, and government agency engineering applications. The coordinates of three-dimensional Geodetic system are latitude, longitude, and height above ellipsoid (HAE).Because of its ability to cope with the intrinsically three dimensional character of the earth's surface, the Geodetic system is capable of supporting precise relative positioning and very high accuracy computations of distance between any two positions on or near the earth's surface. The two-dimensional UTMand State Plane systems are extremely useful for the …

A Computer Program For Population Analysis, W. Ralph Rice, Walter L. Manger
A Computer Program For Population Analysis, W. Ralph Rice, Walter L. Manger
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A computer program for population analysis has been developed that is simply written, but relatively sophisticated. It consists of three parts: computation and tabulation of data, statistical analysis and plotting. The program can be understood readily by computation center personnel and requires a minimum of modification for use in most facilities. Once the program is instituted, an instructor need only have knowledge of the format requirements to use it. Lack of a programming background need not prevent an instructor from using the computer for population analysis.
