On The Concept Of Form In Geographical Studies, Gerald R. Pitzl

ABSTRACT - The concept of form in its subjective (strictly qualitative) connotations is inappropriate as the organizing principle for geographical investigations. Yet, elements identified as formal (structural/morphological) which are objectively measurable are valid for study and possible integrations toward holistic conclusions. Thus, if the form-function-process approach is to be advanced, the formal segment must be stated in a clearly determinable mode in order to allow integration.

Quantitative Analysis Of Pinedale Landforms, Beartooth Mountains, Montana And Wyoming, William L. Graf

The spatial distribution of terminal moraines in alpine valleys can be quantitatively described using distance/regression models. Surface parameters indicative of age may also be numerically analyzed. Evaluation of postglacial modification of valley sides between terminal moraines provides an additional indicator of relative age of valley segments. Analysis of the geomorphology of alpine features in the upper Rock Creek drainage in the southeastern Beartooth Mountains, Montana, shows that glaciers in this area deposited evidence of two Bull Lake, four Pinedale, and two Neo glacial advances.

The purpose of the thesis was to examine the extent to which geography is integrated into history courses. This was done through analyses of the maps in eighth and tenth grade history books. Every map in each book was tabulated according to its purpose, characteristics, and cartographic techniques. The statistics which were gathered from these tabulations were then used as a basis for percentages of the maps devoted to various purposes. The Geomorphology Of The Glacial Valley Cross Section, William L. Graf

Several alpine valley systems in the southeastern Beartooth Mountains, Montana and Wyoming, have been examined using techniques similar to methods of stream system analysis. The general equation y = a x**b is the most adequate mathematical model for the cross valley profile; b values range between 1.5 and 2.0, indicating a parabolic form. As intensity of erosion increases in the glacial valley system, the b value also increases, indicating relatively deeper and narrower valley cross sections. The law of stream numbers, the law of stream lengths, and the bifurcation ratio, derived from fluvial geomorphology, are also applicable in glacial geomorphology.

It has long been realized that tributary urban development and channel improvement greatly affect the flow regime in a given watershed. A previous study used the Stanford Watershed Model to derive relationships expressing how the flood peaks in Sacramento, California, might be expected to vary with changing conditions of urbanization, channelization, and tributary drainage area. In order to observe the effects of climatic setting and geographical location on these relationships, the same type of analysis was applied to a drainage area near Louisville, Kentucky.

ABSTRACT-The acceptance of the Kantian classification of geography among the sciences as the science of space carries with it certain methodological obligations. Geographers who advocate a macroscopic approach to research are especially bound by Kantian strictures to employ mechanistic models of gravity, equilibrium and potential force fields in their studies. This population needs recreational facilities, and a high percentage turn to fishing the many lakes and ponds in the area. As a result of this desire to go fishing, a need for bait arises. The best all-around live bait for the game fish in this region is the shiner. Since the demand exceeds the supply, the game fishermen are quite willing to pay for their live bait.
