Agriculture is a central part of Tanzania’s economy. Both within Dar es Salaam, its primate city, and in the city’s peri-urban zone, agriculture is an important part of the livelihood strategy for people of all social classes. However, because the peri-urban zone is one of transition from urban to rural, it tends to undergo more pronounced changes in land use over time than do the city and rural area it borders. Over one and a half million Hmong refugees have arrived in the United States since the end of the “Secret War” in 1974. The Saint Paul and Minneapolis metropolitan area is home to the largest urban population of Hmong immigrants in the United States. A significant number of Hmong refugees living in the Twin Cities metropolitan area have chosen farming as both a primary and supplemental source of income. While living in the metro area many Hmong rent land in peri-urban areas to farm and subsequently sell at local markets. The international community witnessed a self-proclaimed 'historical breakthrough'at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in late Summer 2004 as a framework was created to eliminate all export subsidies and reduce domestic subsidies and tariffs respectively. While many hailed this step as a major victory for developing nations, others have been cautious on the 'success'of this agreement. This honor thesis evaluates the short- and long-term effects of this framework agreement on the agricultural sectors of the US, South Africa and Mali. Between 1935 and 1992, the number of farms in the United States decreased from approximately seven million to fewer than two million. This change left a noticeable imprint on the landscape. Working farmsteads have been reduced to idle, desolate buildings, or in some cases there are no buildings left at all. To study this transformation, black and white air photographs from 1950 were compared with 1990 air photographs. Also, plat books and ground checks in four townships in Watonwan County in southwestern Minnesota helped document changes. In agricultural economies, environmental learning and the use of environmental knowledge are central practices of social reproduction. The former is important because it encompasses the acquisition of important vocational skills and knowledge, and the latter because it is often integral to the work of providing or procuring basic needs goods and services. "The Valley Gravity Project Plan has been formulated to furnish an adequate and dependable irrigation water supply for fertile and productive area in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, It would also provide drainage works, which would remove the threat of destruction of the economy of the area due to effects of a high water table and salt accumulations. The project works would permit generation of the maximum practicable amount of electrical energy which otherwise would be required to operate irrigation pumping plants. Other incidental benefits include fish and wildlife conservation, recreation and flood control."

The purpose of this thesis is to divide the state of Ohio into agricultural regions, and, so delimited, to describe and interpret these regions in a geographic manner. The basis of division is the use of the land for varying agricultural purposes. These variables are expressed my means of isopleth maps showing acreage percentages of land use. Factors of the natural environment, such as soil, bedrock, climate, topography, and drainage, aid in the interpretation of these regions.
