Environmental governance (EG) has become a hegemonic concept for understanding and transforming environmental decision-making processes that operate beyond the state. However, political ecologists, drawing from a diverse set of theoretical frameworks, have critiqued the concept for being malleable, vague, and apolitical, which has enabled its appropriation in ways that conceal inequality and difference, advocate techno-managerial fixes, and espouse neoliberal solutions. Political ecologists have approached EG more critically with the conceptual tools of neoliberal natures, environmental regulation, and eco-governmentality. In this article, we contend that these conceptualizations, while theoretically rich, are limited in their capacity to capture a diversity of governance …

Background:

In June of 2021, a heatwave resulted in high mortality across the Pacific Northwest region. The city of Portland, Oregon, had many advantages: emergency response personnel, science-based policies, political support for climate change adaptation, and collaboration among municipal, county, state, and federal authorities. Though the city’s response likely prevented many deaths, heat-related mortality was high.

Methods:

This study presents a retrospective case analysis of the 2021 Western North American Heatwave in Portland, Oregon. Specifically, the study examines the limitations of current heatwave response paradigms by means of a narrative review of the heatwave response and impacts.

The serial occurrence of atmospheric rivers (ARs) along the US West Coast can lead to prolonged and exacerbated hydrologic impacts, threatening flood-control and water-supply infrastructure due to soil saturation and diminished recovery time between storms. Here a statistical approach for quantifying subseasonal temporal clustering among extreme events is applied to a 41-year (1979–2019) wintertime AR catalog across the western United States (US). Observed AR occurrence, compared against a randomly distributed AR timeseries with the same average event density, reveals temporal clustering at a greater-than-random rate across the western US with a distinct geographical pattern. This thesis conducts an extensive hydrological examination of a flooding event in Fujairah emirate, a partially dry landscape distinguished by its exceptional land utilization and soil composition. This research reveals crucial knowledge about how Fujairah Emirate basins behave hydrologically by fusing land use, land cover classification, hydrological soil groups, weighted Curve Number (CN), maximum discharge computations, and return period evaluations. One fundamental discovery is the significant differences in CN values across the region's basins. • About 98% of the grainbelt had adequate vegetative groundcover (more than 50%) to prevent wind erosion in October 2023. This amount of groundcover is normal at the end of spring and pre-harvest in most areas.
• There was a larger than average area with 51–60% groundcover, and groundcover in these areas is expected to reduce over summer to below 50%.
• About 2% of the grainbelt (293,000 ha) had less than 50% groundcover, which is inadequate to prevent wind erosion. Mullewa to Morawa Ag Soil Zone had the highest risk of wind erosion and 8% of this farmland had inadequate groundcover. …

This study was conducted for Rebecca Farm to provide insight into the characteristics of attendees to the twentysecond annual The Event at Rebecca Farm. Paper surveys were completed by 158 attendees of the event. Results show that 41% of attendees were residents of Flathead Country and 59% came from outside of Flathead County. Visitors spent an average of 6.55 nights in the Flathead Valley area. People spent the most money ($96,336) on accommodations (hotel/motel/B&B/rental cabin/home), followed by restaurants/bars ($21,265), then the Rebecca Farm Trade Fair ($17,126). Respondents to the survey reported total spending of $199,471 in the Flathead Valley. Results …

attendees of the Yellowstone Harvest Festival. Surveys were implemented on site during the event. A total of 78 event attendees participated in the survey. Results show that 81% of respondents were residents of Montana and of those Montana residents, 33% were from Park County. Out-of-county respondents spent an average of 3.55 nights away from home. Of those nights, an average of 2.46 of those nights were in Livingston and 3.50 nights in other nearby locations. Researchers often use geographic information systems (GIS) to measure accessibility to food pantries, but the impact operating hours have on accessibility remains understudied. Unlike grocery stores or healthcare facilities, food pantries have irregular distribution schedules, therefore, measuring geographic accessibility alone potentially creates an inaccurate or inflated representation of access. This research presents a comprehensive assessment of night vision goggles and thermal imagers, with a particular emphasis on their performance under a wide range of environmental and temporal conditions. Field testing of these devices was carried out across diverse settings, including daytime, nighttime, and different environmental temperatures. Key evaluation metrics, such as contrast, recognition distance, and image clarity, were employed to assess device performance.The findings reveal that while night vision goggles maintain consistent performance across various conditions, their image clarity and contrast are influenced by the recognition distance. The Granite Island Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) location became a new ground-based remote sensing aerosol site in 2018, and is the first site to collect aerosol data in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula using a Cimel sun photometer. The purpose of this study was to analyze the first complete year (2019) of AERONET data collected at Granite Island, Michigan, and to seek explanations for sudden increases in aerosol optical depth (AOD) values. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite imagery, solar irradiance data, and meteorological data were used in conjunction with AERONET data for further validation. During his time in service, Beatty kept a journal and meticulously recorded dates and key events, though Beatty was not unique in doing so, as diaries, journals, and letters were essential correspondence during the Civil War (Maness and Combs 2010). However, Beatty, who moved to Gibbon, Nebraska following the war in 1872, later shared his original journal entries which were reprinted in the Buffalo County Beacon (Gibbon, Nebraska’s newspaper). The Geographical Bulletin

Using qualitative research techniques, this article demonstrates how colonial memory and postcolonial dynamics permeate the everyday lives and encounters of Algerian-origin people in France and inform the ways they conceive of, and experience, social membership and belonging. This work investigates what it means to be a racialized minority in a postcolonial context and to learn and experience the boundaries of ‘Frenchness’ and ‘Algerianness.’ It is based on the narratives of Algerian immigrants who have migrated to Paris, France and their French-born children. The empirical evidence highlights how Algerian immigrants and their descendants encounter and structure their interactions with French society. …
