The Custom Profile Extrusion Industry, which is one segment of the total Plastics Industry, has developed within Southern Ontario during the last two decades. The behaviour of the firms which make up the Profile Industry has not been scrutinized, collectively, to determine whether or not they qualified as a growth pole within the context of Perroux’s theory. Through the use of a heuristic approach this industry has been studied and evaluated. The findings from the data collected from these firms has been examined to ascertain the relevancy of this industry within a growth pole concept.

This thesis examines the phenomenon of reconnaissance satellites and their role in the present arms race. While volumes of material have been written on the arms race in general, or the weapons race in particular, very little has been written on the role of satellites in this conflict and almost nothing has been written on the role of reconnaissance satellites. There is a need for much greater debate on the role of reconnaissance satellites in outer space. The main interest of this study is the urban ethnic mosaic within the context of the core-periphery concept: its historical and spatial expressions of ethnic groups in Toronto. The study will focus on the socioeconomic contrasts—income, education, and occupation—between the major ethnic group and the subgroups. Two dimensions, those of ethnic mobility and socioeconomic characteristics, have been set up to inquire into geographic changes in ethnic groups over time and into the degree of socioeconomic polarity between the ethnic groups at one time. Since world war two, tourism has evolved into a major industry within the Caribbean region. This development has not occurred evenly in space, and significant discrepancies in intensity exist among and within the islands. The evolution of the tourism industry on the islands of Tobago may be divided into a number of stages, including pre-touristic, early development and developmental. These constructs, based on tourist arrival and accommodation data, resemble the earlier phases of the product diffusion ‘S’-curve. Previous research has indicated that shopping center images consist of various components and that different images are held by consumers, retailers, and mall management. The study examines the consumers’, retailers’s, and mall managements’ images of two shopping centers in the City of Waterloo. One center is Conestoga Mall; the other is Westmount Place. Responses were obtained from shoppers, retailers, and management by use of questionnaires and interviews. The data was analyzed using Biomedical Programs (BMD), a frequency count, factor analytic work, and step-wise multiple regression. It is estimated that the sample of farmers interviewed and surveyed consists of 50 per cent of those who had undergone the process of relocation/expansion in the past two years in the Niagara region of Ontario. The spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana Clem. is the foremost forest pest in Canada. The species is endemic to eastern North America. Since the turn of the century the insect has become a major problem in the “Great Lakes St. Lawrence Forest Region” of Ontario, an area where prior to recent times the insect did not occur in damaging numbers.

Highland Creek can be defined as a flashy stream on the basis of the basin and channel hydrology and hydraulics. The extremes between the low and high-flow stage are dependent on the hydro-geomorphological features of the urban environment. The peculiarities of the urban landscape, serve to differentiate Highland Creek from naturally flashy channels.

The industry initially concentrated in the Northeastern region of the United States. It was prevented from expanding by the limitations of the truck type of the time. Factors affecting land prices in the open countryside of Wellington County from 1961–71 are investigated in this study. Land use was the major determinant of price and the significance of location, size and time varied according to land use. Soil had no effect on land prices. These factors were poor predictors of price which suggested that formation of land prices was a complicated process. The fragmentation of rural land into residential parcels from 1966–1969, combined with favourable economic conditions caused dramatic price increases for residential land and smaller increases in farm land and farm prices. This paper deals with methods of classification of the drainage basins of Northern Ontario, with the identification of hydrologic regions. Discriminant analysis of the data proved to be the most valid of the options tested, although visual interpretation and grouping analysis both showed themselves to be useful. In all, four hydrologic regions were identified, and these show a strong relationship with the physical characteristics of the area. Of particular importance was the presence of glacial lacustrine clays in the Clay Belt area.

Swaziland is in many ways a unique country on the African scene. The last African state to receive political independence from colonial Britain (in September, 1968), it has since been politically and socially dominated by the considerable personage of the world’s longest reigning Monarch, His Majesty King Sobhuza II. Over its 25 km. length the Norwood esker traverses two morphologically different areas, a northern section of kame, and a southern section of elongated drumlins. In the north the esker consists of single and multiple ridges: where multiple, the ridges are superimposed on a lower, broader, plateau-like base. In the south a high, steep-sided single ridge is present. In both areas, where single, the ridge splits locally into two narrower ridges which region a short distance downstream.

Internally, the esker contains mostly cross-laminated sands, tough-shaped and tabular sets of cross-bedded sands and gravel, and matrix-supported sandy gravels. The cross-laminated sands …

The purpose of this thesis is to find how a child’s cognitive abilities affect his cognitive map. Most of the earlier studies concentrated on socio-economic factors as the main factors affecting cognitive mapping, either ignoring cognitive ability or giving it minor consideration. This study surveyed a group of children ages 12 to 15 years in a Junior High School in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The study revealed that cognitive ability significantly affected the forms of the cognitive maps of the students, but was not a significant factor in influencing the elements placed on the cognitive maps. Children of high achievement and …

Development geography has traditionally concerned itself with describing regional economic disparities in a country and seeking normative remedies for the problem of uneven ‘development.’ Rarely was the problem perceived of as an historical process, or as a process which transcends national limits, or as an outcome of ideologically-based strategies. Since Louis Roy started Ontario’s first newspaper in 1793, the newspaper industry has been growing. Daily and weekly newspapers were born and either survived to the present or died at some later date. Newspapers appeared to have followed the spread of settlement throughout the province, until a saturation level was reached. After this only minor filling in occurred except in the Toronto to Hamilton region where suburban weeklies were started. Modern and ancient environments associated with Lakes Algoma and Huron were studied according to attributes of stratigraphy, sediment texture, parameters, sediment size distribution, bedforms, and primary sedimentary structures. Results from a computation of wave refraction diagrams and from an examination of the wave climate characteristics indicate that the modern embayment is low energy.

A sediment texture comparison between modern and ancient environments indicates that higher energy pervailed in the ancient environment relative to the present day environment. The Lake Wisconsin glaciofluvial deposits in Woolwich and Pilkington townships are examined for the purpose of environmental reconstruction and the establishment of the paleocurrent patterns. Sediment grain size and primary sedimentary structure are used to define sedimentary facies of environmental studies while the distribution of indicator pebbles, trends in clast size reduction and primary sedimentary structures and employed for paleocurrent analysis. The exposures most representative of the depositional sequences encountered are examined and provide an impression of the sedimentological characteristics of the various glaciofluvial deposits.

Despite the existence of different levels of manufacturing in the various regions of Ontario, most previous studies of this phenomenon have concentrated on explanation of its locational pattern in southern Ontario only. In contrast, though, this thesis analyzes regional variation in the growth rate of manufacturing employment in a total provincial framework. Also, its approach differs in that it examines variation in the factors which account for manufacturing employment growth and whether or not these variations are consistent over space (between regions) and through time.

The study examines the residential relocation experiences of a group of homeowners expropriated in 1965 as the result of the realignment of the Welland Canal just outside of Welland, Ontario. It is based on interviews conducted in 1975 with 85 of the approximately 150 affected households. With Brown and Moore’s (1970) location decision model providing the conceptual framework, information was gathered on satisfaction with the expropriated home, the relocation decision process, demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the households, changes in living habits accompanying the expropriation, as well as data on the pre- and post-expropriation locations.
