Our small club had an interesting and enjoyable year. In late October GTU sponsored a geography quiz in the student union to test students' knowledge of geography and draw their attention to the upcoming Geography Awareness Week. The Friday before Geography Awareness Week, we published some of the results of the quiz and promoted geography as an interesting and rewarding career. During Geography Awareness Week, we again set up a table in the union and highlighted different aspects of geography and promoted our department.

Glacio-Dynamic Variations In Central New York Drumlins: A Morphometric Analysis, Mark Francek, Roger Blish

Varying rates of till deformation as a function of surface topography and direction of continental ice advance are linked to pattern and form variations in drumlins. Five transects are examined morphometrically . Transects are selected on the basis of their slope and direction of ice advance. A hypothesis based on variable rates of clast lodgement and till deformation accounts for most of drumlins' spatial characteristics. The Cayuga Trough funnelled most of the ice southward and the large amounts of till mobilized contribute to high drumlin densities. The observed increase in drumlin elongation is linked to local ice surging. Away from …

This paper reports on the procedures and problems associated with the development of a digital cartographic data base for the creation of small scale, small size locator maps. These locator maps are used as inserts to accompany thematic and planimetric maps. They are generally very simple outlines of coastlines or political boundaries, but may also contain boxed or shaded areas, graticules, and occasionally, thematic content. Several cartographic data sets were evaluated and three were chosen for use to cover a map scale range of 1 :800 million to 1: 30 million. The data sets were then reviewed and edited. Finally, …

The agenda of the General Assembly of the United Nations has been dominated by Cold War battles between the United States and the Soviet Union during much of the organization's 45-year history. Do countries who support the United States on votes associated with the Cold War receive larger quantities of U.S. foreign assistance? This paper examines two hypotheses pertaining to this question with regard to the voting behavior of 12 Central American and Caribbean countries between 1970 and 1987. The cross-sectional analysis finds significant evidence for a link between U.N. voting behavior and the quantities of per capita U.S. foreign …

The Use Of Dendrogeomorphic Techniques To Date A Beaverdam Outburst Flood In Oglethorpe County, Georgia, Katherine A. Schipke, David R. Butler

An outburst flood from a failed beaver dam occurred in September, 1987, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The flood event tilted, scarred, and traumatized trees along the banks of Millstone Creek. Dendrogeomorphological techniques were employed to verify that the flood event was recorded in the annual rings of these trees, and to produce an index cutoff value for ring responses. Because of its recency, a very high number of sampled tree-rings recorded the flood; however, older floods are less likely to be so strongly recorded in the sampled trees, diminishing the usefulness of the index value concept. Newspaper Headlines And Location: A Survey Of Geographic Knowledge Of Eastern Michigan University Students, Steven P. Semmens

This study assesses the ability of Eastern Michigan University students to correlate selected newspaper headlines with the actual location of the associated stories. For this purpose, a stratified random sample of 100 students was selected from students enrolled in classes offered by the Military Science Department. A 25-item test was given to 25 freshmen , sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The students' scores averaged 76.7 percent. Of the variables examined, significant differences in test results were obtained when comparing males to females, the four academic classes, and groupings based upon ACT scores. The Eta Gamma Chapter of GTU sponsored a number of events that were well attended by both student members and faculty guests. The Chapter hosted a coffee hour for the new department faculty member, Dr. Michael Broadway. Geography Careers Night was arranged by Eta Gamma as part of the 1989 Geography Awareness Week celebration. Two Geneseo geography graduates presented their views on job opportunities in the field, followed by questions from a panel of GTU officers.

An analysis of federal rules for siting hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs) reveals that minimal consideration is directed towards the potential for groundwater pollution during transport. Hazardous substances are being introduced to groundwater annually from spills during shipping. Federal regulations do include stringent aquifer protection measures for the immediate facilities' sites; however, little attention has been paid to the hydrogeological sensitivity of the highway and railway corridors. This project raises the policy question of possibly including the hydrogeological sensitivity of transport routes as decision-making criteria for location of proposed TSDFs. The north-central United States, namely Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, experienced a severe drought during 1987-88 crop year. Monthly precipitation data of the crop year (September through August) were analyzed for 58 stations over the period 1964-65 through 1987-88 to quantify the intensity and extent of this drought. With the exception of a narrow strip in northern Minnesota the entire study area was affected by this drought. More than 92 percent of the stations experienced seven to eleven months of precipitation deficiency during this drought. Approximately 50 percent of the study area experienced precipitation deficiency of over 30 percent. South-central Iowa …

Some 4,500 centennial farms were documented in Michigan at the end of the 1980 decade. Qualifications for centennial farm status are somewhat subjectively interpreted. However, the most important criterion is based on families and descendants occupying farms for 100 years or more. Some farms are being decertified when the continuous ownership is broken by sale of the property. The necessity to sell is attributed in part to declining farm revenue, aging farmers who lack heirs and urban land pressure. The Abandoned Shipwreck Act of 1987 is perhaps the most important piece of recent federal legislation enacted affecting underwater archaeology and the preservation of underwater historic sites. With this short statute, the federal government vested title to virtually all historic shipwrecks in navigable water to the states. The act also changed existing legal principles in order to allow the states to enact their own laws to protect and preserve underwater historic resources. The launching of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 is sometimes regarded as the start of the warship building race preceding World War One and is often seen as one of the causes of that war. In fact, the European battleship building race goes back to the 1880s. Most of the countries of Europe participated in some way in this race, which involved significant transfer of technology from the more developed to the less developed countries of Europe. Late Holocene Coastal And Estuarine Environments Of The Shanghai Area, People's Republic Of China, Li Jinan, Yan Qinshang

Four major sedimentary environments have been identified in the Shanghai area which were deposited over the past 7,000 years, 3 to 20 meters above a Pleistocene basal clay. These are marsh, lagoon, recurved spit and tidal flat. The morphology west of Shanghai is a fresh water marsh since it was not transgressed by rising Holocene sea levels. In the central area, a recurved spit and lagoon had developed from 6,500 years B.P. to 3,500 years B.P. However, the tidal flat has characterized coastal sedimentation in the eastern part of Shanghai since 3,000 years B.P.

To date, four historic maps of Fort Michilimackinac, Michigan are recognized: de Lotbiniere's Plan and Description (1749), the Magra Map (1766), the Nordberg Map (1769), and the Crown Collection Map (circa 1766-1769). These maps are all different in a number of important map features, including scale, style, technique, and portrayal of the type and detail of information included on the map, especially the accuracy of the location and size of structures within the fort. This paper also demonstrates the wealth of social, cultural and architectural information contained within the four existing historic maps. In conjunction these maps have both aided …

This study applies a phenomenological framework to the study of place in Berlin, New Hampshire. The results of Berlin's efforts to identify sense of place are compared with the findings generated by a phenomenological approach to the study of place. It is shown that the attributes and qualities of place that are most important to the people of Berlin are mentioned in the phenomenological interviews but sometimes overlooked or misinterpreted by the city's efforts. Sense of place is not embodied purely in the landscape or heritage, but exists in the minds of the people. Sense of place is a dynamic …

Being a geographer and " doing geography" are challenging, meaningful, satisfying, and fun. Geographic knowledge can be a marvelous source of intrinsic satisfaction; increasingly it also can offer substantial vocational rewards. Seasonal values of maximum temperature, minimum temperature and precipitation were examined in a study of climatic trends and variability for winter and summer in central Montana. Regional trends for the three climatic elements were graphed for the period 1949- 1986. A Student's T-test was utilized in order to detect significant changes. For winter, temperature declined significantly from the 1960s into the 1970s while snowfall increased slightly followed by a slight decrease during the 1980s. For summer, although maximum temperatures were significantly cooler during the 1950s, very little change in temperatures generally occurred. During National Geography Awareness Week we sold world T-shirts at the student union, held a geography quiz contest, and had our annual Geography White Elephant Auction which brought in over $350.00. We had our Christmas Party at the local Best Western with great food and happy spirits. This research was designed to determine the impact of topographic variables on the total length of avalanche chutes in southern Glacier National Park, Montana. Seventy-eight snow avalanche paths were manually interpreted from aerial photographs within the study area, and their outlines were delineated on U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps with a scale of 1 :24,000. Terrain variables were either measured directly from the maps or derived from the original ones. Terrain parameters were first analyzed by using the descriptive statistical method. Total path length was then regressed against the independent variables elevation, orientation, and slope gradient. We found that: (a) …
