The Continent contains 2,941,526 square miles (with Tasmania, the island state, the Commonwealth comprises an area of 2,967,909 square miles): By comparison, Australia is slightly smaller than the 48 contiguous United States, and roughly the same latitudinal and longitudinal dimensions. Joseph T. Sinclair died in the Spring of 1970. He had been at Eastern Michigan University since 1958, and his was not the ordinary, stereo-typed professional career. As an undergraduate Bud Sinclair trained in both Geography and Geology at the University of Michigan. As an undergraduate he participated at Geology field camps but developed his great love for geography w hile traveling in the Orient with Professor Robert Hall.

The vital word in Saint Thomas and Saint John is water. Because of the lack of it in the past, the population remained low. With new desa linization techniques, the islands can support both a greater local as well as tourist population. The basic problem stems from the fact that the islands are volcanic in structure (Figure one) without water storage pockets. Also, there are no fresh water rivers. An anomalous pattern of high warm-season precipitation centered on the city of La Porte, Indiana, has recently been described in the literature.' The presence of this pattern was attributed to rainfall augmentation as a result of atmospheric pollution by the heavy industrial complex in the vicinity of Gary, Indiana (Figure one). Other natural gradients in addition to that of rainfall exist in the La Porte area, however, and possibly suggest that the former pattern has had a longer-term existence. This paper briefly examines the historical development of these orientations as influenced by Briti sh and Pacific-rimland considerations and notes some of the problems now faced by New Zealand as it readjusts to its new and conflicting orientations.' Naiguata is a small coastal town in the Federal District of Venezuela some 24 miles from Caracas (Map 1). Because of this proximity to Caracas, land use patterns have been significantly affected in recent decades by resort development. Geographers by and large have failed to make very effective or extensive use of the information available in the Tract Books of the General Land Office, which provide evidence of the selection of lands in the public land states of the United States: The Tract Books show the date of entry for each claim, the name of the transferee, and the nature of the transaction for each plot of land alienated from public domain. This is approached through the problem of transportation in relation to distance between the parts' supplying centers and St. Louis, the site of assembly. I would like to explore with you the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, the northernmost province of Yugoslavia. In developing a perspective on Slovenia, I will emphasize the cultural and economic distinctiveness of the region in order to distinguish this nation from the rest of the Yugoslav state. Yugoslavia is a relatively new country in Europe, being established in 1918 following the World War I disintegration of the extensive Habsburg and Ottoman Empires.
