Factors affecting the spatial distribution of the Portland cement industry are discussed and applied to Kentucky. Cement is found to be both raw material and market oriented and to be highly sensitive to transportation costs. Several areas in Kentucky are found to have the necessary raw materials for cement. However, only one of these sites, Louisville, has sufficient markets to support cement production; this area is served by two factories. There are no unused sites suitable for cement production in Kentucky. The Lexington area has the potential of being able to support cement production by the year 2020.

Alabama's Segregation Academies: A Geographic Analysis Of Enrollment Decline, Frederick Mader

The purpose of this research has been to document and analyze the pattern of declining segregation academy enrollment in Alabama prior to 1975. Segregation academy enrollment grew steadily until the 1971-1972 school year. Since that time, a decrease in enrollment has occurred. The lack of adequate documentation and analysis pointed to a need for this research. In August, 1975, the 126 public school superintendents in Alabama were asked to provide information concerning segregation academies in their school districts via a mailed questionnaire. The condition of water resources in the rural Andean community of Berlin, Colombia, was explored for the purpose of future development in the area. Through investigation of water acquisition techniques, use, and water discharge methods, combined with analysis of chemical water quality tests, the overall pattern of water resources in the study area was revealed. Although the methods of acquiring water were not found to be especially damaging to water quality, the use, and more importantly, the methods of discharging waste water suggested a water resource base harboring certain questionable qualities. Mortality data from two populations, Bowling Green and Lexington, Kentucky, were correlated with atmospheric conditions for this region. The mortality data included the cause of death by respiratory disease, age, sex and race. The respiratory diseases considered in this study were emphysema, tuberculosis, pneumonia, asthma, influenza, acute and chronic bronchitis. The atmospheric conditions considered t have an effect on health were temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity and precipitation. Mean temperature, mean barometric pressure, and mean precipitation per month were correlated with the death rate per thousand but proved no significance at the .05 level in either study area. A field study of the lower reaches of the Long Creek drainage area in southeastern Allen County, Kentucky, established the karst character of that area. The area heretofore had been described as a non-karst area. Four swallow holes, which individually or collectively totally pirate Long Creek, were identified. Two major resurgences of the pirated flow were located and described. A detailed study of a portion of the Long Creek drainage area revealed thirty-four springs, all of which were pirated at least once, and no flow from these springs reached Long Creek by surficial routes. A a result of the federal enactment, many states are producing rail plans. Wisconsin is presently preparing one such plan which included the elements of freight operations. The State also has produced a Manual for State Railroad Planning. Both documents have included railroad abandonment as topic of discussion. This study deals with the Holocene environmental dynamics experienced by a seasonally wet-dry landscape of tropical Columbia. In light of a high ecological sensitivity, the study area is also analyzed as the resource of man. This is done by intensive study area reconnaissance, mapping, altimeter survey, and radiocarbon dating of fluvial landforms. Also, samples of soil, pasture, and water were collected for later study, and several interviews were completed with local residents.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution of retail grocery stores in Bowling Green, Kentucky using the formal element of store size as a controlling theme. This purpose was behaviorally accomplished through a cartographic analysis of the city wide arrangement and a statistical analysis measuring the degree and intensity of selected variables. A survey of pertinent literature was undertaken to discover locational trends and to uncover sixteen specific variables suggested to provide association with grocery store distribution. The purpose of the study was to explain the temporal variations of the residential distribution of Blacks in Nashville, Tennessee. A stepwise regression model revealed that Black occupancy exhibits positive relationships with substandard units and overcrowded units and an inverse relationship with average monthly rent. While the quality of housing became more equitable in the period of 1950 to 1970, overcrowding increased in severity. During this period of Black population augmentation, residential expansion took place. The purpose of the study was to determine the degree and intensity of the factors affecting the spatial distribution of substandard housing in Bowling Green, Kentucky. A stepwise regression model revealed that straightline distance from the CBD, overcrowded units, average number of rooms per dwelling unit, renter occupancy and non-white occupancy accounted for only 37 percent of total explained variation. A filtering process based on blocks exceeding ten percent Black population was utilized to divide the universe. This hypothesis proved to be true for the city of Bowling Green. Although there was no pronounced peak of land values as found in many of the larger cities, there was found in the central business district the highest land values in the city.
