Young people today often hear their eIders talk about the severe winters oftheir youth, noting colder, snowier times in the past. A survey of elderly residents of NW Wisconsin documents their perceptions of past winters. The results of this survey were then related to an nual and decade mean winter temperature and snowfal l data from the same region for the period, 1920 to 1996. It appears that memories of the most severe winter weather are connected with childhood. A majority of respondents chose the 1930s as being the coldest decade in memory. In reality, it was not. The 1997-98 school year saw an increase in volunteering for GTU members. A new initiation criterion for members is to donate five hours for the semester at any of the many off campus sites that needed help. This is an activity sponsored through the Campus Volunteer Center and is a good way to offer community service. We hosted two successful canoe trips this year: the fall trip was on our own Evergreen Lake and the spring trip was on the Vermillion River. The transportation of oil from Kuwait between the years 1970- 80, which was a period of relative political stability, is discussed. Based on physical, geopolitical and economic factors the country elected to use tankers rather than pipelines as did many other Gulf countries. During the period 1970- 80 the oil field to transport facilities, onshore and offshore rapidly expanded and technologically improved. Paralleling this active growth, oil tanker construction and capacity had increased. In recent years geopolitical circumstances in Kuwait and emerging Asian markets justify the option of tankers moving oil via the Gulf over pipeline transport to Mediterranean ports.

This paper explores Latino urban migration to Green Bay, Wisconsin, an intermediate size city of approximately 100,000 people. According to the census of 1990 there were approximately 1,500 Latinos living in Brown County with 1,000 ofthese living in the city of Green Bay. By 1997, estimates of the Latino population in Green Bay are from 6,000 to 7,000. Such a growth rate makes Latinos the fastest growing minority group in the city. The paper explores the nature of the migration process within the spatial and temporal context of Latino presence in the major urban centers of Wisconsin, and analyzes settlement …

The current restructuring of the American economy from goods producing industry to service providing industry has been a focus of concern for many social scientists. While some argue in favor of the rapidly expanding service sector, pointing out that growth in services creates employment and generates income, others emphasize that many service sector jobs pay considerably less than comparable manufacturing sector jobs, which continue to be lost in many metropolitan areas. The status of geography has long been a concern to its practitioners. Efforts have been proposed to increase both the visibility and vitality of geography at all educational levels. These efforts include the activities of social organizations such as Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU). This paper tests the hypothesis that geography departments with active chapters of Gamma Theta Upsilon, a geography honor society, will experience a greater increase in declared geography majors than will departments with inactive GTU chapters. Findings confirm our hypothesis, and suggest that Gamma Theta Upsilon, as a visible and active honor society on university campuses, does contribute …

Population centroids are useful tools in describing the general trend of population movements. This paper uses population centroids to show the changing geography of the U.S. population between 1970 to 1990. Data of population counts of census tracts and census block groups were obtained from the Internet. With a geographical information system, weighted population centroids for each of the 48 states in the continental U.S., four census regions, and nine census divisions for 1970, 1980 and 1990 were calculated. The findings indicate that the westward movement of the U.S. population remains strong and that a southward trend of population movement …

The general decline in manufacturing employment is explored and contrasted with the overall growth in the number of service jobs over the period 1990-94. New York and Los Angeles suffered declines in both producer services and manufacturing employment, whereas in contrast, Cleveland and Detroit, for example, registered gains in both sectors. The majority of cities had both gains and losses. Employment in 7 categories was analyzed for the 20 largest U.S. metropolitan regions. New York and Washington DC exhibited some similarity in their roles as shapers of the services economy. Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit were similar in the role …

The federal government's engagement in dealing with U.S. inner city concerns has been extensive although the results have not been satisfactory. In spite of repeated special considerations given to the problems, the lack of lasting solutions necessitated launching new urban empowerment zone and enterprise community projects in recent years. This paper reflects on the attempts made thus far to change inner city conditions and the inevitable challenges of development faced in market economies. Certain preliminary assessments are made with regard to the current Empowerment Zone project, using Baltimore city as an example.

A survey instrument was employed to examine: the present and future computer infrastructure of Ohio's public high schools; technology funding; and the GIS awareness and perceptions of selected Ohio high school educators. Results suggest that introducing computer technology into the educational framework is a priority to Ohio's administrators and teachers alike. Furthermore, the number of technology funding sources is increasing, as is the number of dollars spent on computer technology. However, computer use in Ohio's public high schools is not ubiquitous. Nearly 40 percent of all schools surveyed do not have the computer infrastructure necessary for GIS use. While this …

Patterns and forms of international tourism have changed significantly over the past three decades. Specifically, ecotourism has emerged as an ostensibly environmentally and culturally sensitive option to more traditional forms of tourist activities. Taking advantage of the proliferation of modern communications technologies, ecotour agencies have utilized the World Wide Web to facilitate the marketing and promotion of their tours. This paper examines the implications of Webbased technology and tourism. In 1995, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi implemented a Bachelor of Science degree program in Geographic Information Science. The program was planned by university faculty, researchers, an active member of the Texas surveying profession, and a senior GIS manager in a large Texas State government agency.
