Climatic Trends And Variability During Winter And Summer In Central Montana, Elizabeth G. Lowell, Philip W. Suckling

Seasonal values of maximum temperature, minimum temperature and precipitation were examined in a study of climatic trends and variability for winter and summer in central Montana. Regional trends for the three climatic elements were graphed for the period 1949- 1986. A Student's T-test was utilized in order to detect significant changes. For winter, temperature declined significantly from the 1960s into the 1970s while snowfall increased slightly followed by a slight decrease during the 1980s. For summer, although maximum temperatures were significantly cooler during the 1950s, very little change in temperatures generally occurred. The 1991-1992 school year for the Alpha Chapter of GTU was truly a successful one with 25 active members participating in quite a few events. During National Geography Awareness Week we sold world T-shirts at the student union, held a geography quiz contest, and had our annual Geography White Elephant Auction which brought in over $350.00. We had our Christmas Party at the local Best Western with great food and happy spirits. Terrain Influences On Total Length Of Snow-Avalanche Paths In Southern Glacier National Park, Montana, Jay K. Gao

This research was designed to determine the impact of topographic variables on the total length of avalanche chutes in southern Glacier National Park, Montana. Seventy-eight snow avalanche paths were manually interpreted from aerial photographs within the study area, and their outlines were delineated on U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps with a scale of 1 :24,000. Terrain variables were either measured directly from the maps or derived from the original ones. Terrain parameters were first analyzed by using the descriptive statistical method. Total path length was then regressed against the independent variables elevation, orientation, and slope gradient. We found that: (a) …

Gravestone Landscape Evolution Of A Japanese Rural Community, Tadashi Nakagawa

Quantitative and chronological examination of 99 gravestones of four cemeteries in a rural community northeast of Tokyo reveals the effectiveness of gravestone study in reconstructing historical geography of Japanese rural villages. Temporal patterns of gravestone inscription, the number of bases and such design elements as vases, water holders, and incense burners clearly show the changing styles and values toward burial customs, economic conditions, and some aspects of family units.

Spatial Variation In Poverty Levels Within The Lower Mississippi Delta Development Region, Wendy Shaw

In 1988 a Senate bill established the Lower Mississippi Delta Development Commission, whose stated purpose was to address the poverty of the region. The region identified spanned seven states and included 187 counties, and was said to share economic, social, and cultural ties. While some underlying similarities may exist in the region, the manner in which poverty manifests itself is differentiated spatially, and the region is far from homogeneous. Variations with respect to the national average in per capita income, percentage of families below the poverty level, rate of high school graduation, and unemployment rate were examined and mapped. Approximately thirty years ago, when I was just starting graduate school in geography, one of the first impressions I gained was the low priority accorded teaching. The emphasis, instead, was on research. The attitude was that anyone could teach but not everyone could do hotshot research. In fact, I got the impression that professors who were so wrapped up in research that their lectures were disorganized and confused were admired more than professors who did little or no research but whose lectures were superb. (There were, of course, inexplicably, those rare professors who did both remarkably well.) In general, poorly …

This paper attempts to empirically document the spatial variations in employment and revenue for selected businesses in the tourism industries of 20 states under study. Employment and revenue figures were classified by US Census SIC codes, and separated into two classifications : direct and supporting tourist services. In states with large economies, a diversified economic base frequently minimizes tourism's proportional importance to statewide service economy employment; however, in many states with small economic and population bases, tourism employment made a significant proportional contribution to the service labor market. States with large economies have high absolute revenue in both the direct …

Despite admonitions from grammarians, journal editors, and conference program chairs, many geographers apparently either know not or care not about the advantages of choosing the forceful active voice over the feeble, often anonymous, passive voice. Paired examples of (1) previously published sentences, from geographic sources, containing at least one passive expression and (2) my revisions of the same sentences provide herein illustrative material for authors wishing to activate their prose.

Sunbelt migration and increased per capita wine consumption have stimulated the opening of 27 new wineries in Texas since 1976. Choosing the location of a winery is one of the vintner's most important decisions. A survey of vintners provided a ranking of locational criteria that was used to develop an economic locational model of winery location. A preliminary model was tested and discarded in favor of a more narrowly defined model. Critical marketing locational criteria included proximity to tourist areas, access to grapes, distance from urban areas, access to an interstate highway, and severity of county alcohol laws.

The delta region on the south bank of the Yangtze River displays a diversity of urban/rural settlement patterns. The area, referred to as the New Pudong Development Area, includes belt or linear settlement patterns parallel to artificial dikes and rivers, as well as clustered settlements which occur further inland. The more diverse settlements are most often associated with administrative centers within the town. To the west, extended urbanization related to the expansion of Shanghai is impacting the rural landscape. Urban land uses are replacing rural land uses. Settlement types are identified and a classification is proposed. These types are Belt, …

This year was another exciting one for the Alpha Chapter. Duri ng National Geography Awareness Week we sold Tshirts and went on a wild weekend canoe and camping trip to Turkey Run in Indiana. The weather and fall colors were beautiful, hiking was fun, and the river was low, making a wet run for 5 out of 6 canoes. In November, the members took an Indianapolis trip to see an ice hockey game and to sightsee.

Certain mid-latitude coastal areas are zones of extreme baroclinicity during the coldest months of the year. Because midlatitude cyclones often tend to travel along these zones of coastal baroclinicity, the exact timing of the variations in the degree of baroclinicity along these coasts is important with regard to the forecasting of cyclonic storm tracks and their associated weather. This study examines the variations in the timing and magnitude of the baroclinicity along the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico of the United States. Duathlon performance in male "middle-of-the-pack" (MMP) athletes was examined for 13 races held in Oregon and British Columbia during 1990. The primary objectives was to investigate the relationship between topographic and race-day weather variability on MMP duathlon performance. Regression models were created to help explain MMP performance for each duathlon segment (first 5 km run, 30 km bicycle, second 5 km run), overall, and 5 km run disparity. A suite of topographic and raceday weather variables were considered as possible explanatory variables. First 5 km ~un performance is primarily a function of the topographic difficulty of the course. Native mountain goats must cross U.S. Highway 2 in order to gain access to a natural salt lick along the southern boundary of Glacier National Park, Montana. Prior to 1981, goats approached through forest cover and then crossed over the highway. Reconstruction of the highway incorporated two goat underpasses which substantially altered the migration pattern. Large numbers of goats now utilize an open, south-facing slope, and cause extensive erosion. Repeat photography illustrates the extent of erosion over the period since 1981 , and provides estimates of the amount of sediment removed. Erosion rates are startlingly high, and are a direct …

Glacial landforms in the valleys of the Shenchenbao Glacier and the Lailogoru Glacier located on the eastern side of Mt. Meylixueshan (6,740 m), the highest mountain in Yunnan Province, China, were investigated in the field. The Shenchenbao Glacier terminates currently at 3,570 m and in the valley below, four terminal moraines and one pair of grand lateral moraines are recognized. The lowest terminal moraine is located at 3,260 m, about 2.5 km down from the present glacier snout. The snout of the Lilogoru Glacier lies at 2,650 m, about 900 m lower than the Shenchenbao Glacier. The Alpha Chapter is surprising itself every year with more initiates (21 this year) and more active members (35 very active individuals)! We were a busy bunch this year starting with our Homecoming float and kiddy kazoo band, in conjunction with the Political Science Club, with 60 parents and children participating, and even receiving third place award of $150. National Geography Awareness week included geography quizzes across campus, selling geography T-shirts, and visits to the local Junior High schools to make kids more aware of geography. We even had a 6th grade geography poster contest with local stores donating prizes.

While the relation between vegetation clearance and increasing streamflow appears to be strong for data aggregated among geographic regions, results are equivocal in local areas. Earlier data are re-analyzed to consider the role of hydroclimatology. While vegetation clearance increases absolute streamflow, the proportional change is not significant. Residuals of regressions of absolute and proportional change in streamflow on vegetation clearance are related to precipitation, with positive and negative slopes, respectively. A few outliers with high responses are important in creating a pattern, and hydroclimatology is a better predictor of change in streamflow than is vegetation clearance for aggregate data. With …

This paper describes an alternative to capstone field courses in undergraduate curricula. Early opportunities for faculty guided exploration and discovery provide students with firsthand field experience and is an effective means of recruiting and retaining qualified geography majors. A wide ranging, rapid movement model is more effective for introducing students to the spatial character of geography than single destination capstone courses

Due to the United States' reliance upon the electoral college, its presidential elections are intrinsically geographic events. In their campaigns successful candidates must address issues of varying pertinence in different places and at different geographic scales. The three 1992 presidential debates provide an opportunity to consider the relative geographic emphases of the three presidential candidates based on their references to geographic places. This paper uses the verbatim dialogue of the 1992 presidential debates to extract place name references by each of the three candidates. Cemetery Landscape Of Ascension Parish, Louisiana, Tadashi Nakagawa

A geographical analysis of 39 cemeteries in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, reveals a cultural mosaic of the parish. While French Louisiana culture is dominant throughout the area, some elements of the Upland South culture, such as feet-to-east burial orientation, appear in eastern Ascension Parish. The distribution pattern of above ground burials indicates a cultural hierarchy in western Ascension Parish with Donaldsonville in its peak.
