American society is a very mobile one, with approximately twenty percent of the populace changing its place of residence every year. It has been estimated that over two-thirds of all moves take place within the city. Geographic studies of intra-urban migration generally treat the relocations as either 1) movement from one areal unit to another, such as inter-census tract flows, or as 2) individual-level, unrelated moves between respective origins and destinations. In reality, however, each change of residence is one part of a much longer sequence of changes.

This thesis examines intra-city moves within the framework of their real-world linkage …

This report attempts to determine the efficacy of using geographic impact areas as analytical sub-groups for the assessment of the impact of multi-purpose reservoir projects on target communities. The impact areas utilized are: the take area; the below-the-dam area; the urban area; and, the adjacent area. Each area is described in detail and each is analyzed for differences in knowledge, previous experience, and perception of impact on community and family.

Data for this study originated from structured and open-ended interviews in Johnson County, Kentucky. Information was collected during two field efforts, the first in February, 1974, the second in August …

The Image Of Provo, Utah, As Seen Through The Perceptions Of Its Residents, J. Larry Murdock

The data for this study was gathered through a random stratified geographic sample from all residential areas of Provo. The study was based on 84 completed questionnaires which were gathered on the basis of a broad socio-economic cross section. All of the questions were open-ended, and included the drawing of mental maps of residents' images of Provo. The data was analyzed on the basis of respondents' areas of residence, age, length of residence in Provo and religious background.

The purpose of the study was to focus on the visual perception of Provo, Utah, as seen by its residents. The study …

A Study Of The Recreational Impact On Nolin Flood Control Reservoir In West Central Kentucky, Afolabi Adedibu

The purposes of this study are: (1) to consider factors that influenced the creation of Nolin Reservoir, and the selection of its recreation sites, (2) to consider the growth and the variations in attendance and participation in activities as a function of quantity and quality of available facilities and accessibility, and (3) to trace the changes that the creation of the reservoir has brought on the surrounding land use, value and ownership. Through the use of questionnaires, interviews and field investigations, the purposes were accomplished.

A Statistical Analysis Of The Residential Distribution Of Blacks In Nashville, Tennessee, Kenneth Szymanski

The purpose of the study was to explain the temporal variations of the residential distribution of Blacks in Nashville, Tennessee. A stepwise regression model revealed that Black occupancy exhibits positive relationships with substandard units and overcrowded units and an inverse relationship with average monthly rent. While the quality of housing became more equitable in the period of 1950 to 1970, overcrowding increased in severity. During this period of Black population augmentation, residential expansion took place. The United States is becoming a country of urban dwellers. Much of this urbanization is occurring outside of the legal city in what is called the urban fringe. Among the solutions advanced to deal with the problems of urban sprawl is the annexation of such areas by the central city. Before annexation can become a reality, its feasibility from a cost-revenue approach must be assessed. When attempting to explain the economics of occupational structure, income servies as the apex of discrimination. Women earn only 60% of what men earn. This statistic does not offend enough people since efforts to change the situation have provided only further resistance by women and men for improvement in the earnings split. Women tend to receive lower wage and salary earnings than men because of differences in types of jobs held, job training and continuity of work experience. Large numbers of women work in traditionally low-paying occupations and low-wage industries. Women tend to respond to their cultural up-bringing. My hypothesis …

Northeast Brazil is a region characterized by economic poverty and human misery. Poor ecological conditions contribute to the nature of the dilemma, but another factor in the apparent cultural stagnation of the Northeast, may be the persistence of values and social practices traditionally aligned with the colonial sugar plantation system. Thus, this thesis represents an examination of the continuity of a given pattern, the man/patron relationship. This pattern is a contemporary parallel to the master/slave relationship which was the key to understanding of the social system of the colonial period.
