Historically and geographically speaking there were three iron deposits in the Ohio Valley. The largest was the Pittsburgh area which included Wheeling the second was known as the Hanging Rock Iron Region, including Ashland, Ironton, and Portsmouth; and the third included the valleys of the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Green Rivers in south-western Kentucky.

The purpose of this thesis is to study factors relative to the location of industry in general, and, specifically, controls leading to the location of industry in the Middle Ohio River Valley.

Natural environmental and economic factors effecting industrial location vary from place to place and in different periods of time, but certain ot these points are likely to be found under practically any conditions.

In April 1952, the National Park Service was requested by Representative E. Y. Berry of South Dakota, to consider the possibility of giving national recognition to Wounded Knee Battlefield, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota. Limited Date on the battlefield was presented on April 22 to the Advisory Board on National Parks, Historic Sites, Buildings, and Monuments. The Board asked that a field investigation and report be made by the Service to secure more comprehensive data.
