Some Interpretations Of A Map On Minnesota Sawmilling, Lyda Belthuis

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Sawmilling in Minnesota started about the time of settlement and, until 1870, mainly consisted of small mills located in the southern half of the state. Mills along the Mississippi River were mainly in urban centers while the remainder were scattered and associated with the clearing of the land and the meeting of the needs of local communities. After 1870, mills become larger. Many were constructed in northern Minnesota. All used forests in the northern port of the state and reduced them so greatly that, by 1920, the mills closed and were replaced by portable sawmills.

Few events in recent years have stirred public imagination and interest to the degree occasioned by the uses made of aerial photographs in the Cuban affair. The average earth scientist, however, was not taken by surprise since the basic methods, materials and principles involved were not new to him. As a matter of fact, since World War II, aerial photography has become an everyday, virtually indispensable tool to most earth feature and natural resource analysts. These changes, in the location of this phase of man's activities, are affected to a large extent by geography. The purpose of this study is to consider some of the influences of geography on the location of industrial productive facilities.

This thesis is a history of the navigation on the San Joaquin River from 1848 until 1925. The main purpose of the thesis will be to examine chronologically any and all events and factors concerned with the navigation of the river during that period of time. The first chapter will survey the geographical and historical background of the San Joaquin River.

Historically and geographically speaking there were three iron deposits in the Ohio Valley. The largest was the Pittsburgh area which included Wheeling the second was known as the Hanging Rock Iron Region, including Ashland, Ironton, and Portsmouth; and the third included the valleys of the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Green Rivers in south-western Kentucky.

The purpose of this thesis is to study factors relative to the location of industry in general, and, specifically, controls leading to the location of industry in the Middle Ohio River Valley.

In April 1952, the National Park Service was requested by Representative E. Y. Berry of South Dakota, to consider the possibility of giving national recognition to Wounded Knee Battlefield, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota. Limited Date on the battlefield was presented on April 22 to the Advisory Board on National Parks, Historic Sites, Buildings, and Monuments. The Board asked that a field investigation and report be made by the Service to secure more comprehensive data.
