The Land of Norumbega - Maine in the Age of Exploration and Settlement.

An Exhibition by Susan Danforth, Maine Humanities Council, Portland, Maine 1988.

This exhibition began in 1986, when the University of Southern Maine received an extraordinary collection of rare maps, atlases, and globes donated by Lawrence M.C. and Eleanor Houston Smith. In 1987, in response to a call from the National Endowment for the Humanities for programs relating to the Columbian Quincentenary, the Maine Humanities Council submitted a proposal for the "Land of Norumbega" project.

The paper traces out the relationships between three sets of actors--workers, factory owners, and government--before, during and after the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, and places those relationships in the broader context of Mexico's political and economic development, as well as the spatial structure of Mexico City and the garment district. The paper concludes that although victims respond to the crisis by attempting to restore and repair previous social and physical conditions, as social theory predicts, disasters have different effects on different classes of people, who respond according to their needs, vulnerabilities, perceptions, values, and their socially prescribed powers. Some. grew into gigantic systems with names we recognize today; Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Chesapeake & Ohio. Others faded into oblivion. But all, successful or not, were built to fill transportation needs.

The purpose of this research is to trace the mainstream of German and related geopolitical philosophy and the various aspects that influenced the philosophy from 1800 to 1945. Two themes evolved: Political Geography and Nationalism. Along with economic considerations, these themes were fused into Geopolitik by Karl Haushofer and his followers in Germany following the end of World War I.
