Examining soil mapping units of the United States Agriculture department's Soil Conservation Service for comparison with land usage In the Blue Earth River valley, this study found that seven of 56 units in the valley accounted for 76.5 percent of the study terrain. Seit 1967 besteht ein Freundschaftsvertrag zwischen der Staatsuniversität Ulan-Bator und der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, innerhalb dessen auch eine Zusammenarbeit auf dem Gebiet der Biowissenschaften ausgewiesen ist. Die gemeinsame Lösung von biologischen Forschungsproblemen stellt ein Kernstück der Freundschaftsbeziehungen zwischen beiden Universitäten dar. In Zusammenarbeit von sowjetischcn und mongolischen Bryologen werden gegenwärtig die in Leningrad befindlichen Aufsammlungen bearbeitet. Ergebnisse darüber sind in der Arbeit von ABRAMOVA und TSEGMED (1975) veröffentlicht. Ein umfangreicherer Beitrag zur Bryof1ora konnte durch die Bearbeitung der von W. SCHUBERT gesammelten 464 Moosproben aus den zentralen und westlichen Landschaften der MVR erbracht werden, Von R. SCHUBERT, W. SCHUBERT, und KOPERSKI wurden 1977 12 Leber- und 88 Laubmoosarten für diese Gebiete nachgewiesen. Weitere Nachweise stellen GROLLE, MEINUNGER, HILBIG und HUNECK (i. Dr.) zusammen. Die Entwicklung der Hydrobiologie in der MVR vollzog sich unter ständiger Orientierung an den volkswirtschaftlichen Interessen des Landes. Deshalb wurde neben grundlegenden Forschungen zu Fauna und Ökologie der Gewässer besonderes Gewicht auf die Akklimutisierung von Nutzfischen gelegt. Die dazu notwendigen Kenntnisse der hydrobiologisch bisher weitgehend unerforschten Seen der Mongolei erbrachten mehrjährige Expeditionen in verschiedenen Gebieten des Landes. Den gemeinsamen Biologischen Chövsgöl-Expeditionen der Universitäten Irkutsk und Ulan-Balor kommt dabei eine besondere Rolle zu. Am See Chövsgöl entstand auch die erste hydrobiologische Station der MVR. Seit mehr als 20 Jahren führen Biologen der Staatlichen Mongolischen Universität Ulan-Bator und von Akademie-Instituten der Mongolischen Volksrepublik gemeinsam mit Zoologen und Botanikern befreundeter wissenschaftlicher Partnereinrichtungen insbesondere der DDR, der UdSSR, der CSSR sowie der Volksrepublik Ungarn in großem Umfang Expeditionen zur Erforschung der biologischen Ressourcen der MVR durch. Im Rahmen dieser Expeditionen wurde unter anderem ein umfangreiches Arthropodenmaterial gesammelt, dessen Bearbeitung einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Erschließung der mongolischen Entomofauna darstellt. Mit zwei großen komplexen biologischen Sammelexpeditionen 1962 und 1964 der Akademien der Wissenschaften der DDR und MVR in die Süd- und Westmongolei wurde der Grundstein für die kontinuierliche Entwicklung der Wissenschaftskooperation auf biologischem Gebiet zwischen beiden Staaten gelegt. Die Kollektionen wurden zum Grundstock eines aufzubauenden botanischen und zoologischen Sammlungsfundus in Ulan-Bator. Durch den Freundschaftsvertrag zwischen den Universitäiten Halle und Ulan-Bator im Jahre 1967 wurden die Kontakte neu aktiviert. The spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana Clem. is the foremost forest pest in Canada. The species is endemic to eastern North America. Since the turn of the century the insect has become a major problem in the “Great Lakes St. Lawrence Forest Region” of Ontario, an area where prior to recent times the insect did not occur in damaging numbers.

Analysis of the life cycle of the insect reveals that the only limiting factor capable of controlling outbreaks is a lack of food. The required tree species is balsam fir Abies balsama (L.) Mill. The forests of Ontario have been altered …

Researchers working in the general area of water resources frequently have need for precipitation data. Unfortunately, the cost of commercially available recording rain gages is often greater than $1,000 per unit. This report describes a microprocessor-controlled remote recording rain gage which is capable of unattended operation for periods of greater than a month that costs less than $400 in single quantities. The laboratory prototype uses a tipping bucket to collect precipitation in 0.01-inch increments. The time of the bucket tip is stored, using an offset binary format, in solid-state memory. This report attempts to determine the efficacy of using geographic impact areas as analytical sub-groups for the assessment of the impact of multi-purpose reservoir projects on target communities. The impact areas utilized are: the take area; the below-the-dam area; the urban area; and, the adjacent area. Each area is described in detail and each is analyzed for differences in knowledge, previous experience, and perception of impact on community and family.

This research used the data on witness trees found in the surveyors' records of the General Land Office surveys of 1805-1815 as the basis for studying the primeval forests of unglaciated southern Illinois. Via computer, the random pairs and closest individual methods of plotless sampling were used to develop stand attributes tables, with soil association boundaries defining the limits of forest stands. A vegetation map was developed from these stands. Four major forest types were delineated: Upland Oak, nixed Hardwoods, Swamp Forest, and Floodplain Forest. This study concerned the feasibility of using digital satellite imagery and automatic data processing (ADP) techniques as a means of mapping swamp forest vegetation. Multispectral scanner data acquired by the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1; renamed LANDSAT-1) was analyzed using ADP techniques developed by Purdue University's Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS). The site for this investigation was the Dismal Swamp, a 210,000 acre swamp forest located south of Suffolk, Va. on the Virginia-North Carolina border. Two basic classification strategies were employed in determining the vegetation mapping capability of ERTS-1 data. The initial classification utilized unsupervised techniques which produced …

Most research on the urban sonic environment has been recent. One finding has been that physical noise exposure indices calibrate poorly with human noise response. The vagaries of human response to noise have given impetus to research to isolate the factors that differentiate human response to noise. The present thesis continues this research.

The thesis specifies human noise response to occur on three levels: awareness, annoyance, and complaint. The factors that structure each level of noise response are identified in the published Iiterature.

Humboldt Bay is a coastal lagoon, 14 mi. long and a maximum of 4 mi. wide. The bay has three distinct segments, South, Entrance, and Arcata Bays, each of which occupies the seaward end of one or more stream valleys cut into Plio- Pleistocene paralic sediments. The segments are linked by narrow tidal channels which are bounded by a barrier spit on the west and by high valley interfluves on the east. Climate of the area is rainy temperate . Tides are of the mixed type with a mean range of 6.5 ft.

It has long been realized that tributary urban development and channel improvement greatly affect the flow regime in a given watershed. A previous study used the Stanford Watershed Model to derive relationships expressing how the flood peaks in Sacramento, California, might be expected to vary with changing conditions of urbanization, channelization, and tributary drainage area. In order to observe the effects of climatic setting and geographical location on these relationships, the same type of analysis was applied to a drainage area near Louisville, Kentucky.

"The Valley Gravity Project Plan has been formulated to furnish an adequate and dependable irrigation water supply for fertile and productive area in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, It would also provide drainage works, which would remove the threat of destruction of the economy of the area due to effects of a high water table and salt accumulations. The project works would permit generation of the maximum practicable amount of electrical energy which otherwise would be required to operate irrigation pumping plants. Other incidental benefits include fish and wildlife conservation, recreation and flood control."
