This article shows the experiences of six young people from Yogyakarta who struggle in the process of school to work transition. These young people creatively implemented long term strategy both inside and outside the field of education They accumulate various kind of capitals so that it can be converted in the future. All of the informants are from middle class background. The result shows they still get benefits from strategies and capital that they had previously created. This paper tries to enrich three perspectives for the study of creative industry, cultural entrepreneurship, social contract, and contextual knowledge, by employing an institutional approach and argues that institutional embbededness plays a vital role in promoting creative fashion distro (distribution store) in Bandung that historically well-known city of fashion. Qualitative method has been used to collect data from various informants. This study reveals that disembeddedness between state and creative fashion business and within society of fashion become a mayor feature of the business. The article aims to elaborate political dynasty that developed in local politics arena. The emergence of political dynasty is indicated by several points. First of all, the failure of function from local political party to conducts political regeneration. Secondly, high cost democracy which impeding public to participate in public office succession. Cultural and social capital is important in the development of industrial cluster of ceramic art craft. This paper describes and explains the role of cultural and social capital in the development of industrial cluster of ceramic art craft in Kasongan. This paper also describes and explains the dynamics of domination and resistance among entrepreneurs in the cluster. By using qualitative research methods show that cultural capital is important for the change of the cluster from the one which produce traditional-functional ceramic to the one which produce artistic ceramic. This work is inspired by invisible sky grids formed by Ultra Violet (UV) light researchers discovered that guide Monarch butterflies on their migration from the mid-western United States to the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico. I use terrestrial material, clay, to make something celestial. Earth, associated with mass and permanence, is translated into these shifting, ephemeral, and ethereal sky-forms. The work encompasses void more than object and the complex shadows they cast are immaterial. Together, the objects and shadows point to what can’t be seen, at least by the human eye.

This paper examines how the interactions between industrial development actors in rural setting reflect the internal dynamics of Third World countries that maintain dependence on developed countries. Power is often discussed in political discourse or in political sociology. In this context, power is understood as the attribution, capacity, or capital to achieve certain goals of the owners. Foucault does not reject this argument, but this perspective would not be able to expose the invisible subjugation. The more critical view of power appears in cultural studies. Gramsci’s concept of hegemony is often used to dismantle the cultural establishment in the process of domination that was veiled. National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
A February 2012 survey of almost 5,000 farmers across a region of the U.S. that produces more than half of the nation’s corn and soybean revealed that 66% of farmers believed climate change is occurring (8% mostly anthropogenic, 33% equally human and natural, 25% mostly natural), while 31% were uncertain and 3.5% did not believe that climate change is occurring. Results of initial analyses indicate that farmers’ beliefs about climate change and its causes vary considerably, and the relationships between those beliefs, concern about the potential impacts of climate change, and attitudes toward adaptive and mitigative action differ in systematic …

Young people are the canaries in our contemporary data mine. They are at the forefront of complex negotiations over privacy, property, and security in environments saturated with information systems. The productive and entertaining promises of proprietary media have led to widespread adoption among youth whose daily activities now generate troves of data that are mined for governance and profit. As they text, email, network, and search within these proprietary ecologies, young people's identity configurations link up with modes of capitalist production. This paper presents our research to develop a gesture-based 3D GIS system to engage the public in cultural heritage. It compares two types of interaction—device-based vs. natural interaction— and summarizes the beta-testing results of a 3D GIS tool for archaeology, called QueryArch3D, in which participants used device-based interaction (i.e. mouse and keyboard). It follows with a description of the gesture-based system—that we developed in response to these beta-tests. The system uses QueryArch3D and Microsoft’s Kinect to enable people use body movements (in lieu of keyboard or mouse) to navigate a virtual reality landscape, query 3D objects, and call up photos, …

New Orleans is one of a number of infamous swamp cities—cities built in swamps, near them or on land “reclaimed” from them, such as London, Paris, Venice, Boston, Chicago, Washington, Petersburg, and Perth. New Orleans seemed to be winning the battle against the swamps until Hurricane Katrina of 2005, or at least participating in an uneasy truce between its unviable location and the forces of the weather to the point that the former was forgotten until the latter intruded as a stark reminder of its history and geography. On-field conversations and confrontations between baseball coaches and umpires have long been a part of the game. An umpire's decision can alter the course of the game, but little has been written about the exchanges between a coach or manager and umpire, especially in relation to theoretical considerations. This study applies management and leadership theories in exploring the strategies baseball coaches use to contest an umpire's decision. By using leadership scholar John E. Barbuto's concept of influence tactics and the various types of social power discussed by sociologists John R. French and Bertram Raven, the study also tests the congruence …
