Urban deer are requiring a renegotiation of settler-Six Nations relations in Hamilton, Ontario. In this article, Daniel Coleman attempts to get to know one doe group that share his neighbourhood in an effort to understand what their presence has to say about how Hamiltonians and members of the Hodinoso:ni Confederacy can honour the spirit of an eighteenth-century treaty in ways that enable us all to live with "the good mind" here at the Head of Lake Ontario in the twenty-first century.

Dialogical Interspecies Ethics: Ataraxia, Desire And Hope In The Post-Human World Of Anne Carson's Pastoral, Thomas Bristow Dr

This review essay implicitly revisits human and non-human power relations within a critical animal studies context that understands the affective conjunction between the manipulation of our worlds (action, partly through knowledge) and degrees of involvement with these others that live in our worlds (comportment via emotions). I take Louise Westling’s new study as the platform for an analysis of two book-length poems, The Autobiography of Red (1998) and red doc> (2013), which centre on the life of a shepherd, Geryon. Rather than revisit classical pastoral, these texts extract power-relations that classical myth and pastoral spatialise. In so doing, I argue, …

The Goose
'The Rooster and the Lemon' is a collaborative work of critical-creative writing and photography between artists-writers Luis Mario Guerra and Connie Michele Morey. The text and image is a part of a larger body of work that emerged from a trip to Havana in December 2013 and is still in the process of unfolding through additional visual forms. The prose and photographs question the im/possibility of stasis and taxonomical containment in an ecological continuum where the processes of death and life and interdependent and imperceptibly entangled.

Farley Mowat's charming childhood memoir covers the usual Mowat terrain: riotous humour, humble reverence, and a meticulous accounting of the little things that make life--all life--dear to us. Mowat's work deserves regular attention in animal studies and environmental literary studies. His autobiographical techniques, as this review suggests, can be both assets and occasional impediments. But there is no replacing or replicating a Farley Mowat, and Born Naked deserves to be read immediately and repeatedly as one of the lasting legacies of a long life, well-lived.

After the reformation (reformasi) in 1998, some civil society organizations (CSOs) have en- dorsed policy changes from outside the government and have involved in many ministries’ assistance team to implement government’s development programs. This paper tries to understand why religious violence increasingly occurs in post-New Order Indonesia. There are two dominant views in understanding this. First, the secu- rity approach that perceives the violence as a result of the emergent of “radical” agent of political Islam in the more open political space. In this regard, the state is considered weak because the iron hand as used by the authoritarian regime in the past New Order has disappeared. However, the completion of disguised unemployment has been only focused on the improvement of the economic structural transformation from agriculture to industry as an aspect of macro analysis, without considering aspects of micro analysis. Firstly, the practices problem of spatial planning in urban areas, especially in Surabaya City, has led to the contestation and conflict among governmental actors, the public, and the power of capitalist/investor.
