A Geographic Sketch Of Early Utah Settlement, John Thomas Blake

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis depicts in a visual format the settlement geography of early Utah.

Several topics in Utah's historical geography were mapped by conventional cartographic techniques to give an overview of processes and patterns of settlement.

This thesis points to the utility of maps in portraying information concerning settlement activity. It indicates that visual correlations enable the student to better understand settlement through spatial relationships.

Of special interest are the use of color maps, and the creation of physical relief impressions by photographically screening a raised relief map of Utah.

Since the first man perceived and used his environment, there has existed a reciprocal man-land relationship. The physical environment provides opportunities for man's use and also sets limitations. Man's perception and use of his environment is greatly influenced by his culture, which consists of past experience, technology, attitudes, and needs. It is these factors that determine what a man will see as possibilities in land use, and how he will use his environment.

The purpose of this study is to examine the logging industry found along, the upper Cumberland River from the 1870s to the 1930s. Because the industry was very much a part of the economic lifeblood of the people of the region, the study will focus upon the loggers and raftsmen who worked with the timber. Any attempt to describe the lumber business alone would be futile due to the nature of the industry. This thesis will investigate the spatial location of stone houses and the areal differentiation of several characteristics of stone houses in selected communities. Some differences in cultural and historical factors and in types of building stone, quarries and quarrying techniques will be studied. The thesis will also investigate why stone houses are still in existence and things that owners, residents, and others like and dislike about them.

A Finnish riihi in Minnesota is described and analyzed from the perspectives of form and function. The riihi or the combination grain drying, threshing, and winnowing barn, is one of the several folk architectural forms that immigrants from rural Finland built and used in settling sections of Minnesota. Since most of the log structures erected by the Finns are in a state of decay or already have vanished, it seems pertinent to preserve examples of the transplanted folk heritage in writing, and hopefully, in material form as well.

Sacred space is that part of the total environment which is perceived as sacred by individuals and religious groups. Sacred places may be conveniently divided into five generic categories: mystical, historical, and functional sacred places; and homelands, and places connected with the future fulfillment of prophecy. Sacred places of all five types are found in Mormondom. The temples, as mystical sacred places, were the most sacred. The Sacred Grove was the most sacred historical place. This paper examines religious spatial interaction within an urban environment and as such contributes to the sparse literature on the Geography of Religion. It is the specific purpose to illustrate the journey to worship of households in the City of Waterloo, Ontario and to explain the spatial pattern utilizing the Principle of Least Effort.

It is discovered that if historical tension and dimensional tension are considered, one is able to predict the actual pattern of the journey to worship with seventy per cent accuracy. The fact that a large per cent of the sample attend the closest church of their …

A Journal compiled by Duane A. Stober for a 1969 Wofford College Interim project. The project was a canoe trip on several South Carolina rivers from Pacolet to Charleston. This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East.
