The New International Regime Of Liability And Compensation For Oil Pollution Damage : Status And Trends, Hanling Wang Dec 1999

The New International Regime Of Liability And Compensation For Oil Pollution Damage : Status And Trends, Hanling Wang

World Maritime University Dissertations

The new international legal regime of liability and compensation for oil pollution damage under the 1992 Conventions mainly consists of one definition, two tiers of compensation scheme and three principles. Firstly, one definition—pollution damage. This definition is the basis of criteria of determining the admissibility of claims under both CLC and Fund Convention. Secondly, two tiers: the shipowners’ liability under CLC and the supplementary IOPC Fund. Strict liability, higher liability limits and compulsory insurance form the basic principles of the regime. Recent developments in pollution compensation systems have two-sided effects on the new regime. On one hand, termination of the …

Fisheries Research Report No. 117 - A 12-Month Survey Of Coastal Recreational Boat Fishing Between Augusta And Kalbarri On The West Coast Of Western Australia During 1996-97, Neil R. Sumner, Peta C. Williamson Dec 1999

Fisheries Research Report No. 117 - A 12-Month Survey Of Coastal Recreational Boat Fishing Between Augusta And Kalbarri On The West Coast Of Western Australia During 1996-97, Neil R. Sumner, Peta C. Williamson

Fisheries Research Reports

A creel survey of recreational boat-based fishers on the west coast of Western Australia was conducted from September 1996 to August 1997 to provide information required by fisheries managers. The bus route method, where a survey interviewer visits all boat ramps in a district on the one day, was used. The time spent fishing, catch, demographic and attitudinal information was collected from boat crews returning to boat ramps at the completion of a fishing trip. The total marine catch (number of fish kept) was estimated for key recreational species. Whiting species (other than King George whiting) (564,000) and Australian herring …

Intelligent Visualization And Automated Processing For Large Scale Geographic Information Systems, Yu Jiang Dec 1999

Intelligent Visualization And Automated Processing For Large Scale Geographic Information Systems, Yu Jiang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on developing a new output system that compacts maps in multiple projections into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) without visual errors, through constructing a discrete GIS database that is managed by a Relational Data Base Management System (RDBMS). Unlike in a traditional large GIS database, the data are "physically discrete but logically continuous." In a new discrete GIS database, every map keeps its individuality without a relationship to any other map, and the relationships among the maps are centrally managed by a RDBMS. A study site was chosen at the boundary of the state of Indiana …

Development And The Environment: A Case Study About The First Attempted Creation Of A Texas Coastal Conservation District, Rene De La Rosa Jun 1999

Development And The Environment: A Case Study About The First Attempted Creation Of A Texas Coastal Conservation District, Rene De La Rosa

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In 1991, the American General Insurance Corporation desired to create a $2.5 billion ``ecotourism'' resort in Willacy County, Texas. Unfortunately, the land the Corporation owned was located within the Coastal Barrier Resource System which does not allow federal flood insurance for any construction in the area due to it's proximity to ``Hurricane Alley''. American General's plan to build hinged on a three-pronged attack at the federal, state, and county levels. At the federal level, AG was shut out except for some minor concessions. At the county level, a municipal utility district (MUD) was established to help with building the infrastructure …

Stream Channel And Vegetation Responses To Late Spring Cattle Grazing, Warren P. Clary May 1999

Stream Channel And Vegetation Responses To Late Spring Cattle Grazing, Warren P. Clary

Ecological Impacts of Animal Agriculture Collection

A 10-year riparian grazing study was conducted on a cold, mountain meadow riparian system in central Idaho in response to cattle grazing-salmonid fisheries conflicts. Six pastures were established along Stanley Creek to study the effects on riparian habitat of no grazing, light grazing (20-25% utilization), and medium grazing (35-50%) during late June. Stream channels narrowed, stream width-depth ratios were reduced, and channel bottom embeddedness decreased under all 3 grazing treatments as the area responded to changes from heavier historic grazing use. Streambank stability increased and streamside willow communities (Salix spp. L.) increased in both height and cover under all 3 …

"Val Verde On The Sunny Rio Grande" Geoarcheological And Historical Investigations At San Felipe Springs, Val Verde County, Texas, Gemma Mehalchick, Terri Myers, Karl W. Kibler, Douglas K. Boyd

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In the fall of 1997, Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted archival and oral history research, an archeological survey, and National Register testing of a prehistoric site in the vicinity of the San Felipe Springs in southeastern Val Verde County, Texas. The work was done in preparation for construction of a water treatment plant and related facilities for the City of Del Rio. The survey resulted in the recording of one historic site (41VV1820) and further documentation of historic and prehistoric components at a previously known site, 41VV444. The latter site also was the focus of intensive geoarcheological investigations. National Register …

Field Station Under Threat, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

As reported in the last issue of The Other Side, The Bernard Biological Field Station of the Colleges is slated to be the site of the Keck Graduate Institute, the newest (but yet unbuilt) addition to the Claremont Consortium. With Pitzer casting the sole dissenting vote, the Claremont Colleges approved construction of the Keck Institute on eleven acres of the 85 acre Field Station.

Course-Based Campus Environmental Research Projects, Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Amy Shachter, Wynn Calder

Biology

Campus administrators and faculty across the country are realizing the educational and economic value of "campus greening." Many administrators have established clear environmental campus policies in an effort to recognize the economic value of green institutional operations and to respond to the need for adopting sustainable practices. Faculty and students have contributed to the green movement by integrating the physical campus into the educational process. At many institutions, students have led efforts to implement environmentally friendly, and in some cases, economically sensible practices particularly in the areas of energy conservation and waste management. Faculty and students have worked together on …

In February this year nineteen people from all over Western Australia were brought together to explore their leadership potential. These nineteen people came from different walks of life and professions but they all had a common passion, rural Western Australia, and they all had a common goal - to gain skills so that they could lead this state into a thriving 21 century. Over the six months we grew very close and experienced great highs and lows. Without the support of our family and friends, employers and others we would not have accomplished half of what we have over the …

Land Development And Biotechnology At The Claremont Colleges, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Founded on the Oxford model of a cluster of institutions, the Claremont Colleges has periodically established a new school. In the Spring of 1997, the Board of Fellows of the Claremont University Center charged with policy-making for the consortium-voted to establish a seventh college; the Keck Graduate Institute of applied life sciences. or bioengineering. Despite other landholdings, including a golf course and a non-operational gravel quarry, the Board of Fellows voted to site the New Venture on a portion-approximately eleven acres--of the Bernard Biological Field Station. (Pitzer's vote was cast against building on the Field Station.)

The Hurricane Hill site (41HP106) in Hopkins County, Texas, is a large, multi-component prehistoric site located on the South Sulphur River along the Cooper Lake dam embankment constructed by the Ft. Worth District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A series of four phases of archaeological investigations were completed at the site by the Institute of Applied Sciences, University of North Texas, between September 1986 and July 1987, as part of the mitigation of adverse effects on important cultural resources necessitated by the construction of the Cooper Lake dam. This report summarizes the research objectives, and methods of excavation …

Late Caddoan Occupation Along Cowhide Bayou: An Update On The Belcher Mound And Village Sites, Jeffery S. Girard

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In the early 1930s, a northwestern Louisiana farmer cleared an area along Cowhide Bayou near the small town of Belcher. As he attempted to level a rise with a slip, he encountered a human skeleton. Fortunately, although he continued work in the surrounding area, he left the rise alone. Dr. Clarence Webb heard of the find in 1936 and began a project that would continue more than 20 years. It resulted in what remains today as the most completely excavated and reported mound investigation in the Caddoan area. Webb's work at the Belcher Site (l6CD13) not only provided a remarkably …

Caddoan Ceremonial Sites Of The Caddoan Cultural Area Of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, And Texas: Draft Caddo National Landmark Nomination, Mark R. Barnes, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Since 1997, we have been working on the development of a National Historic Landmark (NHL) cover nomination for Caddoan ceremonial sites - earthen mounds in the Caddoan cultural area of southwestern Arkansas, northwestern Louisiana, eastern Oklahoma, and northeastern Texas. Such a nomination establishes the historic context within which all similar cultural properties can be evaluated for significance according to the NHL criteria, as it establishes the research and other criteria by which a cultural property may be identified as a significant archeological resource.

Deconstructing The "Sanders Focus" And The "Sanders Phase": A Reply To Perttula Regarding The Taxonomy And Significance Of The So-Called Sanders Focus, Or Sanders Phase, Pottery Of Northeast Texas And Southeast Oklahoma, Frank F. Schambach

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Perttula is correct in pointing out that there are numerical errors in a recently published table of mine. A revised version is presented here as Table 1. Although several of these errors are numerically large and might have caused problems had they gone uncorrected, Perttula is not correct in suggesting that they are "serious" in the sense that they have affected the conclusions I "reached based on the table," the insinuation being that they weaken my Sanders entrepot hypothesis. They do not. That hypothesis is part of the reinterpretation of the archeology and bioanthropology of the Arkansas Valley and the …
