Do Foreign Direct Investment And Foreign Aid Promote Good Governance In Africa?, Adugna Lemi, Blen Solomon, Sisay Asefa

Adugna Lemi

The literature on the roles that governance/political and economic stability play to attract capital flows into African economies has been burgeoning. Good governance, liberalization, infrastructure, incentive packages have been regarded as cures to break the deadlock to reverse the economic plight, to attract inflow of capital and, in some cases, to reverse outflows of African economies. The flow of capital, however, has undesirable side effects on host economies’ working conditions, environmental standard, inequality, and culture, among others. These economic and social external or negative spillover effects are due to the phenomenon of “race-to-the-bottom” where companies invest in economies with lax …

A Priceless Review, David Thomas Nov 2013

A Priceless Review, David Thomas

David Chandler Thomas, PhD

The book, Priceless, is chock full of ideas, many of which are undoubtedly useful. The style is readable, with enough anecdotes to keep the reader’s interest. Unfortunately, the book is almost as confusing as the health-care system. There are too many moving parts, too many clever ideas, and not enough high level insights into how to cut the Gordian health-care knot. As hard as it is to make changes in the U.S. health-care system, it is unlikely the author’s suggestions will find a listening ear.

The Economic Influence On Electoral Politics, David Lynch, Nicholas R. Jesteadt, Brencis Navia Oct 2013

The Economic Influence On Electoral Politics, David Lynch, Nicholas R. Jesteadt, Brencis Navia

Professor David Lynch

The economy has been one of the focal points of not just this election, but almost every election in the past. The incumbent party attempts to portray the economy as healthy, recovering, prosperous; the opposing party attempts to show stagnation and volatility. This presentation aims to expose the effect of the economy on campaigning and electoral outcomes by examining historical elections and projecting toward the 2012 election. What economic factors influence voters? We examine unemployment, GDP growth, inflation, and several others as we try to piece together the economic impact on elections. Our guest speaker is David Lynch, a senior …

The Structural Injustice Of Forced Migration And The Failings Of Normative Theory, David Ingram Oct 2013

The Structural Injustice Of Forced Migration And The Failings Of Normative Theory, David Ingram

David Ingram

I propose to criticize two strands of argument - contractarian and utilitarian – that liberals have put forth in defense of economic coercion, based on the notion of justifiable paternalism. To illustrate my argument, I appeal to the example of forced labor migration, driven by the exigencies of market forces. In particular, I argue that the forced migration of a special subset of unemployed workers lacking other means of subsistence (economic refugees) cannot be redeemed paternalistically as freedom or welfare enhancing in the long run. I further argue that contractarian and utilitarian approaches are normatively incapable of appreciating this fact …

Vico’S New Science Of Interpretation: Beyond Philosophical Hermeneutics And The Hermeneutics Of Suspicion, David Ingram Oct 2013

Vico’S New Science Of Interpretation: Beyond Philosophical Hermeneutics And The Hermeneutics Of Suspicion, David Ingram

David Ingram

The article situates Vico's hermeneutical science of history between a hermeneutics of suspicion (Ricoeur, Habermas, Freud) and a redemptive hermeneutics (Gadamer, Benjamin). It discusses Vico's early writings and his ambivalent trajectory from Cartesian rationalism to counter-enlightenment historicist and critic of natural law reasoning. The complexity of Vico's thinking belies some of the popular treatments of his thought developed by Isaiah Berlin and others.

Regulation Of Recruitment Process And Reduction Of Migration Costs: A Comparative Analysis Of South Asia, Piyasiri Wickramasekara

PIYASIRI WICKRAMASEKARA

The study undertakes a comprehensive review of issues relating to recruitment processes and high migration costs in South Asia with special focus on Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

The paper first highlights migration trends in South Asia, and main features of South Asian migration. Next the paper reviews the international normative framework of recruitment covering the Private Employment Agencies Convention, 1997 (No. 181), the Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189), and the ILO Multilateral Framework on Migration (2006).

The paper reviews the main features and practices of private recruitment agencies and the legislative and regulatory framework covering their operations.

It …

Voice Without Say: Why Capital-Managed Firms Aren’T (Genuinely) Participatory, Justin Schwartz Aug 2013

Voice Without Say: Why Capital-Managed Firms Aren’T (Genuinely) Participatory, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Why are most capitalist enterprises of any size organized as authoritarian bureaucracies rather than incorporating genuine employee participation that would give the workers real authority? Even firms with employee participation programs leave virtually all decision-making power in the hands of management. The standard answer is that hierarchy is more economically efficient than any sort of genuine participation, so that participatory firms would be less productive and lose out to more traditional competitors. This answer is indefensible. After surveying the history, legal status, and varieties of employee participation, I examine and reject as question-begging the argument that the rarity of genuine …

The Universal Savings Credit, Christian Weller, Sam Ungar Jul 2013

The Universal Savings Credit, Christian Weller, Sam Ungar

Christian Weller

The financial crisis of 2007 to 2009 took a tremendous toll on household wealth and shattered the sense of financial security for millions of American families. American households lost more than $20 trillion in wealth (in 2012 dollars) in the Great Recession, and households still had $10 trillion less in wealth at the end of 2012 than they had before the crisis. This massive wealth decline contributed to a widespread loss of economic security, particularly among lower-income and moderate-income families, single women, and communities of color. This economic insecurity can have long-ranging adverse effects on U.S. economic growth as American …

Economic Aspects Of Internet Security, Henk Lm Kox, Bas Straathof Jul 2013

Economic Aspects Of Internet Security, Henk Lm Kox, Bas Straathof

Henk LM Kox

An economic perspective on Internet security is useful not only for identifying weak spots, but also for finding solutions to security problems. It focuses on the behaviour and economic incentives of both infrastructure providers and end users. Individual parties may have insufficient incentives to invest in cybersecurity. The free play of markets markets may not deliver a socially optimal level of security on the Internet for at least three reasons: information asymmetry, externalities and market power. Information asymmetry might occur in various situations. For example, end users are not able to verify whether an Internet Service Provider (ISP) correctly informs …

Economic&Social Benefit Analysis Of Mining And Energy Projects In Solomon Islands And Papua New Guinea, Deogratias Harorimana Dr Jun 2013

Economic&Social Benefit Analysis Of Mining And Energy Projects In Solomon Islands And Papua New Guinea, Deogratias Harorimana Dr

Dr Deogratias Harorimana

The World Bank states that mining encompasses metals and minerals. It includes open-pit and underground mining, large scale operations as well activities of small scale. (World Bank.org). Many big and strong economies of the world have mineral and mining as very important sector in terms of job creation and contribution towards the overall GDP of a country. The economic benefits brought about by the mining industry to many economies, especially the developing countries are substantial. Due to mining activities, infrastructure developments are taking place and governments are able to get tax incomes which eventually go towards improving services to the …
