Religion, Administration & Public Goods: Experimental Evidence From Russia, Theocharis N. Grigoriadis
Theocharis Grigoriadis
In this paper, I argue that religion matters for the provision of public goods. I identify three normative foundations of Eastern Orthodox monasticism with strong economic implications: 1. solidarity, 2. obedience, and 3. universal discipline. I propose and solve a public goods game with a three-tier hierarchy, where these norms are modeled as treatments. Obedience and universal discipline facilitate the provision of threshold public goods in equilibrium, whereas solidarity does not. Empirical evidence is drawn from public goods experiments run with regional bureaucrats in Tomsk and Novosibirsk, Russia. The introduction of the same three norms as experimental treatments produces different …

Religious Origins Of Democracy & Dictatorship, Theocharis Grigoriadis
Religious Origins Of Democracy & Dictatorship, Theocharis Grigoriadis
Theocharis Grigoriadis
Weber considered the Protestant work ethic the foundation of modern capitalism. I extend Weber’s theory by arguing that states with predominantly Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Muslim populations have had a stronger inclination toward underdevelopment and dictatorship than states with Protestant or Jewish majorities. This is the case because their respective religious collectives (monastery, tariqa) promote the hierarchical provision of common goods at the expense of market incentives. I define the aforementioned three religions as collectivist, in contrast to Protestantism and Judaism, which I define as individualist. I provide a historical overview that designates the Jewish kibbutz as the collective …
Postindustrial Societies, Brian Hoey
Postindustrial Societies, Brian Hoey
Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.
The term postindustrial society presupposes categorizing society based on an economic means of classification. Its use rests on assessing the relative status of manufacturing industry as an economic sector. Significant adjustment in sectoral location and nature of employment precipitated by late-twentieth-century deindustrialization in the developed world led many social theorists and critics to predict broad changes throughout domains of everyday life. Some began to speak not only of sectoral transformation but also of an emergent ‘ postindustrial society. ’ Following earlier agrarian and industrial ‘ revolutions, ’ postindustrialism suggested yet another revolution that would again transform how societies were organized.

Development, Health And Race Differences In Fertility At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century In The U.S. South, Cheryl Elman, Andrew S. London, Robert A. Mcguire
Cheryl Elman
Mid-twentieth century demographers were puzzled to find that, between 1880 and 1910, fertility rates had dropped more precipitously among African American than U.S. white women. Since then, demographic research has focused on historical fertility differentials in the South, where most African Americans lived before 1920. Under a multiple causes model, two major sources of race differences have found some empirical support. One stresses that timing differences in voluntary fertility control, due to a high demand for child labor in tenant farming, sustained both high overall southern rural fertility rates and race differences, to about 1940. A second mechanism stresses that …

A Theory Without A Movement, A Hope Without A Name: The Future Of Marxism In A Post-Marxist World, Justin Schwartz
A Theory Without A Movement, A Hope Without A Name: The Future Of Marxism In A Post-Marxist World, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
Just as Marx's insights into capitalism have been most strikingly vindicated by the rise of neoliberalism and the near-collapse of the world economy, Marxism as social movement has become bereft of support. Is there any point in people who find Marx's analysis useful in clinging to the term "Marxism" - which Marx himself rejected -- at time when self-identified Marxist organizations and societies have collapsed or renounced the identification, and Marxism own working class constituency rejects the term? I set aside bad reasons to give on "Marxism," such as that the theory is purportedly refuted, that its adoption leads necessarily …
The Role Of The Law In The Availability Of Public Transit And Affordable Housing In Atlanta’S West End, Elliott Lipinsky
The Role Of The Law In The Availability Of Public Transit And Affordable Housing In Atlanta’S West End, Elliott Lipinsky
ELLIOTT LIPINSKY
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is a branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation that administers federal funds and provides technical assistance for the support of locally operated public transit systems. MARTA / Atlanta metro area are part of FTA Region IV (the Southeast). FTA would be involved, for instance, in financing the federal grant monies discussed above. But actual regulation of operations (i.e., what MARTA does each day, or what MARTA will plan to do regionally) is more closely regulated by Georgia agencies.
Until recently, the Atlanta metropolitan area had no powerful central agency to coordinate regional transit. The …

Collective Choice, Justin Schwartz
Collective Choice, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
This short nontechnical article reviews the Arrow Impossibility Theorem and its implications for rational democratic decisionmaking. In the 1950s, economist Kenneth J. Arrow proved that no method for producing a unique social choice involving at least three choices and three actors could satisfy four seemingly obvious constraints that are practically constitutive of democratic decisionmaking. Any such method must violate such a constraint and risks leading to disturbingly irrational results such and Condorcet cycling. I explain the theorem in plain, nonmathematical language, and discuss the history, range, and prospects of avoiding what seems like a fundamental theoretical challenge to the possibility …

The economic crises of 1929 represented another stage in the series of difficulties faced by sugar producers of Northeastern Brazil since the end of WWI. These regional producers suffered a long process of decline, throughout the decade from 1925 to 1935. Though the Northeastern States used an important political clout to defend their interests, the economic capacity of the State of São Paulo, as reflected in the capitals which chose to invest in sugar and in its local markets for both sugar and fuel ethanol, allowed new mills to be established and old ones to be expanded, during a period …

O Tratamento Historiográfico De Registros De Óbitos, Heitor Moura Filho
Heitor Moura Filho
This text discusses problems found in the analysis of death statistics, specially in the calculation of gross or specific mortality rates, based on incomplete demographic records, such as common in 19th- and early 20th-century Brazil.
Religion, Longevity, And Cooperation: The Case Of The Craft Guild, Gary Richardson
Religion, Longevity, And Cooperation: The Case Of The Craft Guild, Gary Richardson
Gary Richardson
Whenthe mortality rate is high, repeated interaction alonemaynot sustain cooperation, and religion may play an important role in shaping economic institutions. This insight explains why during the fourteenth century, when plagues decimated populations and the church promoted the doctrine of purgatory, guilds that bundled together religious and occupational activities dominated manufacturing and commerce. During the sixteenth century, the disease environment eased, and the Reformation dispelled the doctrine of purgatory, necessitating the development of new methods of organizing industry. The logic underlying this conclusion has implications for the study of institutions, economics, and religion throughout history and in the developing world …

Elementos Endógenos Como Fatores Do Desenvolvimento Local Das Cidades: Uma Reflexão Sobre O Município De Piraquara/Pr, Jorge Amaro Bastos Alves
Jorge Amaro Bastos Alves

The International Diffusion Of An Innovation: The Spread Of Decimal Currency, Adrian E. Tschoegl
The International Diffusion Of An Innovation: The Spread Of Decimal Currency, Adrian E. Tschoegl
Adrian E Tschoegl
This paper argues that decimalization of currency diffused as a consequence of all three forms of isomorphism: normative, coercive, and mimetic. Furthermore, it is ambiguous as to whether the normative isomorphism was well founded. The patterns of denominations show variety by country as a consequence of a number of factors, including cultural ones. These patterns tend to follow a powers-of-two (binary) principle for smaller denominations and a purer decimal principle for larger denominations, reflecting their utility for cash transactions and for store-of-value functions respectively.
