This paper examines how the interactions between industrial development actors in rural setting reflect the internal dynamics of Third World countries that maintain dependence on developed countries. The diverse discussion on the impact of industrialization which mostly emphasized on particular issues is difficult to depict the comprehensive situation on the impacted society. Further analysis which recognized the existence of the mutual relations among state, market, and society is necessary to best describe the invisible but essential impact of industrialization. Power is often discussed in political discourse or in political sociology. In this context, power is understood as the attribution, capacity, or capital to achieve certain goals of the owners. Foucault does not reject this argument, but this perspective would not be able to expose the invisible subjugation. The more critical view of power appears in cultural studies. Gramsci’s concept of hegemony is often used to dismantle the cultural establishment in the process of domination that was veiled. Soka is known in Singapore for its cultural performances in events such as the National Day Parade and Chingay. This is part of Soka’s attempts to present itself as a cultural organization working for peace and progress in Singapore. Participating in these performances is common among the youth of Soka. In this paper I focus on young people’s participation as a form of religious patriotism. For them, it is about sending a message that individual and collective struggles can be overcome and that peace and harmony can be fostered. The Muslim-majority countries long had been considered to be free of HIV/AIDS epidemic because of their strict religious and moral codes. However, the HIV prevalence rates are increasing in some Islamic states, and even more or so rapidly in a several cases that it is no longer valid to assume the Islamic religion protects its followers from the risks of contracting HIV. In this article, the authors discuss the use of green economy to promote sustainable development. Research and Partnerships Unit Head Sheng Fulai states that sustainable development is composed of economic, social and environmental development. Furthermore, it features Research and Partnerships associate Gary Flomenhoft who believes that green economy is useful when it deals with factors such as distribution of wealth and throughput of materials and energy.

Understanding jurors’ perceptions of juvenile defendants has become increasingly important as more and more juvenile cases are being tried in adult criminal court rather than family or juvenile court. Intellectual disability and child maltreatment are overrepresented among juvenile delinquents, and juveniles (particularly disabled juveniles) are at heightened risk for falsely confessing to crimes. In two mock trial experiments, we examined the effects of disability, abuse history, and confession evidence on jurors’ perceptions of a juvenile defendant across several different crime scenarios. Abused juveniles were treated more leniently than nonabused juveniles only when the juvenile’s crime was motivated by self-defense against …

I was one of the research leaders of the Ateneo Cultural Laboratory 2009 in Tayabas, Quezon Province, Philippines. Funded by Fundacion Santiago, the project has released a report offering a comprehensive documentation, analysis, and policy proposals regarding the various aspects of the cultural heritage of Tayabas. This chapter specifically deals with the town's religious rituals which showcase how Catholicism, while deeply embedded in everyday life, also manifests elements that may be pre-Hispanic in character. The paper ends by emphasising a community-based approach to the preservation of these fascinating religious rituals. The report is now in the hands of Fundacion Santiago …

The eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV I AIDS, ensure environmental sustainability, and develop a global partnership for development. The eighth goal (MDG 8), aims to develop and strengthen a global partnership for development between rich and poor countries. The present study attempted to determine the effects of Experiential Therapy on emotional intelligence and self-esteem in adjudicated males and females aged 13 to 17. Twenty-four individuals participated in the study and were randomly assigned to either an experimental or control group. It was predicted that participants in the experimental group would display improvements in general self-esteem and emotional intelligence. The individuals in the experimental group received approximately 40 to 45 hours of Experiential Therapy. The control group continued with the normal JCC program.
