Informal politics exercises a significant influence on formal decision making arrangements although its interplay with formal arrangements has conventionally been ignored. This study investigates how informal politics affects the operationalisation of a formally sanctioned initiative in the sphere of environmental governance. Nyachilo village, situated in the East Uluguru Mountains, was the site of the fieldwork of this study. The establishment of participatory environmental management in this village, through village environmental management committees, aimed at bringing a balance between the twin objectives of environmental conservation and development. The Muslim-majority countries long had been considered to be free of HIV/AIDS epidemic because of their strict religious and moral codes. However, the HIV prevalence rates are increasing in some Islamic states, and even more or so rapidly in a several cases that it is no longer valid to assume the Islamic religion protects its followers from the risks of contracting HIV. From Boom To Doom To Boom: Offshore Financial Centres And Development In Small States, Richard Woodward

During the 1990s tax havens and offshore financial centres (OFCs) were subject to a string of initiatives designed to raise their tax and regulatory regimes to accepted international standards. Many commentators forecast that this would lead to the demise of OFCs, a worry for the many small states whose economic well being depended heavily on the provision of offshore financial services. Despite this regulatory onslaught many small state OFCs have prospered in the new millennium. The eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV I AIDS, ensure environmental sustainability, and develop a global partnership for development. The eighth goal (MDG 8), aims to develop and strengthen a global partnership for development between rich and poor countries. The difficulties of developing and executing a sustainable development program in Small Island Economies (SIEs) are well documented. Comparatively small domestic markets, remote export markets, a dearth of natural and human resources, susceptibility to environmental change and natural disasters, plus limitations on the state’s capacity to govern economic activity have narrowed the range of feasible development strategies resulting in a reliance on sectors vulnerable to the vicissitudes of the global economy.

The emergence of a large number of sovereign states in the post-second world war period generated a new class of issues, perceptions, and feelings as well as theories and approaches of handling the problem of inter-relationships among countries. After the independence of the new states they realised that the existing economic order was highly unequal and detrimental to their interests. Pemerintah pusat memahami hubungan tersebut sebagai asas otonomi terhad. Sedangan daerah memahami sebagai asas otonomi luas yang memberikan perhatian lebih kepada hak asal usul daerah yang bersifat khas. The relationship existing between the Emperor group of companies and the government of Fiji is examined over a forty-year period. During a substantial part of this time the company has been subsidized by the state. Focus is on one particular period, beginning in the early 1980s when the company received taxfree status for its gold-mining operations in Fiji. The study attempts to quantify the value of subsidies offered to Emperor Mines Limited under the terms of the Vatukoula tax agreement between the state and the mining company. Study of development in the Caribbean Basin is incomplete with- out considering the socioeconomic impact of international labor migration on this region, which is defined here as including Mexico, the Carib- bean archipelago, Central America, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Most of the seven books under review deal with the specific case of the Dominican Republic and in doing so bring new theoretical sophistication and depth to examining the link between migration and development.
