ABSTRACT

This project studied the differences between mainstream news reporting in the U.S. and China. I employed content analysis to analyze the major features of 427 news reports about the economic interaction between the two countries. The research focused on the key media frames in the two sets of news media, the factors that shaped these media frames, and the real meanings behind those reports. The study found both similarities and differences. The two sets of media showed significant differences in their reporting of news and events about economic issues in terms of the selection of topics, and the discourse …

The State of Wisconsin recognizes disproportionate minority contact (DMC) is a product of both differential offending by minorities and the racist differential processing by the juvenile justice system. Milwaukee’s residents are locked in a conflict about the role of racism in the high rates of minority crime and whether to address DMC with more stringent punishment or increasing alternatives to incarceration. Group identity is intimately tied with self identity. Yet, people often understand their identity as individual without appreciation for the role others play in their identity. Based on social identity theory this article highlights the role that group identity plays in self identity and explores three consequences of this association. Case studies present first-hand experience with the consequences of communicating group identity. These case studies also demonstrate the value of a specific class project undertaken to provide students with a meaningful understanding of these issues.

Karakter maskulin yang ‘lembut’, yang tumbuh dalam diri kelompok laki-laki urban kelas menengah saat ini berbeda dengan karakter maskulin yang digambarkan oleh media mainstream yang menekankan maskulinitas sebagai karakter yang tegas, keras, gagah dan macho. Kelompok muda saat ini meyakini bahwa laki-laki itu boleh saja menangis, memiliki sensitivitas, melankolis, dan lain-lain. Akibatnya, tidak jarang masyarakat mempersepsikan bahkan mengidentikkan kelompok tersebut sebagai kurang jantan.
