Karakter maskulin yang ‘lembut’, yang tumbuh dalam diri kelompok laki-laki urban kelas menengah saat ini berbeda dengan karakter maskulin yang digambarkan oleh media mainstream yang menekankan maskulinitas sebagai karakter yang tegas, keras, gagah dan macho. Kelompok muda saat ini meyakini bahwa laki-laki itu boleh saja menangis, memiliki sensitivitas, melankolis, dan lain-lain. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami bagaimana seorang pemimpin daerah di era desentralisasi saat ini menciptakan hubungan interaktif dengan masyarakatnya dan membangun kepercayaan mereka. Penulis melakukan pengamatan berperan-serta terhadap Walikota Surakarta (Solo) Joko Widodo (Jokowi) menggunakan bingkai teori dramaturgi Erving Goffman, yang memanfaatkan metafor teater untuk menganalisis perilaku manusia (Mulyana, 2010, h.106). Penelitian ini membahas resistensi pekerja perempuan terhadap dominasi pekerja lakilakidalam film North Country, bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana ideologi patriarki berperan dalam menentukan identitas serta mitos kehidupan perempuan pekerja yang muncul lewat tanda dan bahasa dalam film. Pertama, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pekerja perempuan mengalami ketidakadilan gender seperti kekerasan dalam rumah tangga, stereotip, dan marginalisasi. Kedua, industri Hollywood bukan hanya mewacanakan persamaan hak gender, tetapi juga sebagai media sosialisasi mengenai masa depan ekonomi tanpa batas dalam sistem kapitalisme. Makalah ini berargumen bahwa novel The Year of Living mengkonstruksi realitas melalui framing image Sukarno sebagai seorang pemimpin otoriter. Hal ini diteliti melalui analisis dialog yang terjadi antara tokoh-tokoh fiktif dan narasi-narasi yang berkaitan dengan Sukarno dan Indonesia di tahun 1965. Penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa pengarang melakukan framing image otoriter terhadap Sukarno melalui metafora dan julukan negatif sehingga mengarahkan khalayak kepada sudut pandang yang diinginkan pengarang. Exemplars yang menceritakan kondisi Indonesia di tahun 1965 juga turut memperkuat framing image otoriter Sukarno.

This article discusses about the gender role played by female military officers members of the Army Women’s Corps (Korps Wanita Angkatan Darat/Kowad) represented by the magazine Melati Pagar Bangsa. The writer reveals the dominant ideology behind such representations by employing standpoint theory supported by existentialist feminism to strengthen the basic assumptions of this article. The research findings show that to produce a discourse on gender roles, women are still influenced by dominant ideology, being patriarchy. On the other hand, they also try to emancipate themselves from the binds of patriarchic culture by being subjects for themselves.

In today's global economy, people from diverse cultures strive to find a balance between cultivating their heritage language and mastering the dominant languages that create economic opportunities. This ethnographic study examines a specific case of this cultural, linguistic, and emotional struggle by analyzing language mixture, usage, and change among the descendents of Japanese immigrants (Nikkei) in Lima, Peru. This pioneer study explores the public relations models that inform the practice of public relations in Kenya, and the cultural values that influence this practice. Results show the personal influence model as the most used by practitioners in Kenya, while individualism is the most experienced cultural value. The strong correlation between personal influence model and Hofstede’s cultural value of femininity points to the practitioners’ strong desire for good interpersonal relationships with colleagues, supervisors, clients and key publics.

An increasing number of global migrants are refugees who have fled religious, racial, ethnic, or other political persecution. As these refugee populations have grown, governmental and nonprofit organizations have emerged to help mediate the resettlement experience. The current study explores the dialectical tensions Sudanese refugees face in communicating with the organizations designed to make their resettlement successful. Sudanese refugees participated in semistructured interviews about their experiences communicating with mediating organizations. Guided by the Common Ingroup Identity Model (S. L. Gaertner & J. F. Dovidio, 2000) and Communication Accommodation Theory (C. Shepard, H. Giles, & B. A. LePoire, 2001), we examined the role of identity accommodation, supportive communication, and self-disclosure in predicting relational satisfaction, shared family identity, and group salience in multiracial/ ethnic families. Additionally, we analyzed the association between group salience and relational outcomes as well as the moderating roles of multiracial/ethnic identity and marital status. Individuals who have parents from different racial/ethnic groups were invited to complete questionnaires on their family experiences. Participants (N = 139) answered questions about …

Los Lobos’ album The Town and The City represents a lyrical narrative and performance of journey. The album’s strength and appeal is that it offers a poignant commentary on journey at time when the odyssey undertaken by immigrants to the United States are often demonized, misunderstood, or purposefully manipulated for political benefit. I argue in this essay that the Los Lobos album illustrates and complicates the performance of Chicana/o identity, mestizaje, and hybridity through the metaphor of journey. This metaphorical journey is represented as both a process and event that establishes a sense of connectivity for audiences.

This thesis seeks to examine the impact of far-Right political parties on the British political system. It cites relevant theories of nationalism and provides a brief historical background to frame the analysis of the present case study. Additionally, the work analyzes the British political system to help explain the inability of extremist parties to win a seat in Parliament. During the 2006 immigration rallies and demonstrations, hundreds of thousands of immigrants and their supporters tumed out to protest proposed immigration legislation. Flag waving was a key element of these demonstrations, in which participants employed both the U.S. flag and other national flags, most prominently Mexican flags. In this essay, we examine how flag waving functions as a visual argument that offers possibilities for establishing cultural and national citizenship and creating a visual form of refutation. Specifically, we argue that anti-immigration advocates see foreign flags as visual ideographs that represent recent immigrants' failure to assimilate, immigrants' deviant cultural practices, and …
