Visual Semiotics In Parks: Assessing Pictorial Symbol Effectiveness In Outdoor Recreation Settings, Miranda Jane Foster

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As interest in outdoor recreation grows, so does the need for effective communication in parks and protected areas. With a larger, more diverse visiting population, managers face new challenges, including intensified recreational use, staffing demands, and barriers to communication presented by cultural and linguistic diversity (Manning et al., 2017; Perry et al., 2021). Effective, indirect communication tools, such as pictorial symbol signage, are essential for addressing these challenges. Pictorial symbol signs are widely used in recreational signage and serve as vital indirect management strategies for communicating to diverse visitors as a universal visual language (Davies et al., 1998). However, research …

Integrating Ability-Based Design In Printed Electronics, Kimberly Eder Jun 2015

Integrating Ability-Based Design In Printed Electronics, Kimberly Eder

Graphic Communication

The purpose of the study is to determine if a printed electronic device can be adaptable to the visually impaired, the role that accessible design has in the development of printed electronics, and to determine if integrating accessible design prohibits usability and performance. The findings will provide better understanding of how to modify a printed electronic paper device to suit a wider range of end users and the relationship of usability and accessibility in printed electronics.

Experts in the field were interviewed to get information and feedback about the project. Also, a human research experiment was conducted.Cal Poly students, from different areas …

The Future Of Zines, Chloe Parks Jun 2013

The Future Of Zines, Chloe Parks

Graphic Communication

The purpose of this study was to discover if the creation of handmade zines will continue in the future despite the barrage of digital options for those who desire to self-publish. A case study was conducted by interviewing participants from the zine-making community, who shared their thoughts and insights on the medium. The participants responded to questions about the value of zines to society, their personal zine collections, their digital publishing spaces, and where they thought zines were headed. The results of this study found that zines have historically been proliferated for various reasons, and through this have manifested distinct …

Major Trends In Gravure Printed Electronics, Donna Ariel Clark Jun 2010

Major Trends In Gravure Printed Electronics, Donna Ariel Clark

Graphic Communication

Printing has become a mature industry, forcing printers to create new applications for their manufacturing process. One such application is printed electronics. The gravure printing process allows for incredible speed and exceptional quality for traditional graphic printing. Theoretically, this would be an ideal method for the commercial production of printed electronics. This study analyzes gravure’s capabilities to produce a uniform conductive ink line and what to expect in the future of gravure printed electronics. Printed line properties such as line widening and scalloped edges were determined to impede gravure’s ability to lay down a conductive ink line. Best results were …
