How Can An Outdoor Company’S Public Relations Campaign Be Taken From The Local To National Level?, Devon Swanson

Journalism

The following study researches the most effective way for the outdoor startup company, Summit Outdoor Supply (S.O.S.), to take an already established local public relations campaign to the national level. This study will investigate what factors have helped other campaigns succeed for outdoor companies and what changes should be made to see S.O.S. reach that success. My goal for this project is to educate outdoor companies on how to use the most effective communication channels to reach their target audiences. The data, to support these recommendations, will come from my own experience working with a startup company paired with the …

Hope, Faith And Trust: Conversations With Tibetans In Exile, William Lukas Gramlich

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of Hope, Faith and Trust: Conversations with Tibetans in Exile was to create a documentary to serve as a platform for Tibetan refugees living in India to tell, in their own words, the story of the Tibetan peoples' political struggles since the Chinese government occupied Tibet in the 1950s. To achieve this goal, this project utilized oral-history interviews with Tibetan exiles, gathered as part of the University of Arkansas TEXT Program. The TEXT Program, short for Tibetans in Exile Today, is a study abroad oral-history project in which undergraduate students conduct interviews with Tibetans living in India. The …

Agricultural Communication Lesson Plans For The Agricultural Leadership Class At Elk Grove High School, Chelsea Molina

Agricultural Education and Communication

The purpose of this project was to develop agricultural communication lesson plans for Elk Grove High School’s Agricultural Leadership class. The lesson plans were created after the research of the existing California Agricultural Education and Agricultural Leadership Curriculum standards. The lesson plans were then based off of the FFA Agricultural Communications Career Development Event (CDE) guidelines in order to grasp many of the important details of the CDE. The CDE is offered at the national level but not yet at the state level in California. Providing lesson plans that coincide with the requirements of the CDE will help California FFA …

Hectic, busy, tiring—these are just a few words our target markets use to describe their day-to-day lives. Millennials, young families, and Baby Boomers all feel the pressure of life. Unnecessary Evil: An Examination Of Abu Ghraib Torture Photographs As Postcolonial Resistance Rhetoric, Patrick Gerhardt Richey

Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the rhetorical nature of visual artifacts in a postcolonial context. In order to examine the nature of visual artifacts as a form of resistance against static ideologies and prevailing power structures, the author uses both media and cultural artifacts created in response to photographs taken of abused prisoners at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib Correctional Facility. The dissertation adds to scholarly knowledge of communication by addressing the intersections of iconographic visual communication and postcolonial resistance rhetoric. The dissertation provides a scholarly review of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, as well as of literature explicating …

Radio Talking Book Service, a non-profit organization that assists the visually impaired by providing a free radio reading service, came to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a challenge: increase brand and service awareness throughout Nebraska.

We began by conducting both secondary and primary research, developing key insights and examining all possible target audiences. We investigated the day-to-day life of the visually impaired, learning that many who have experienced vision loss suffer from decreasing independence and increasing feelings of loneliness. Our primary research revealed that these individuals turn first to eye care professionals, resource organizations for the visually impaired and residential …

Gender-Linked Stereotypic Content In Youth Magazines, Devon Cadwell Bazata Apr 2007

Gender-Linked Stereotypic Content In Youth Magazines, Devon Cadwell Bazata

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

This study evaluates youth magazines aimed at or read by three different target audiences--boys, girls, boys and girls--and examines whether the magazines reinforce gender stereotypes, and whether the intended audience makes a difference in that reinforcement or lack of it. First, this study established a theoretical framework upon which the selection of the target age group for the sample was based. Piaget and Kohlberg's seminal work, and Gilligan and other feminist theory, is considered in the context of the results. Second, it defined stereotypic, counter-stereotypic, and gender-neutral attributes based on five previous peer-reviewed studies dating from 1957-1975, and confirmed the …

The Social Landscape: A Photojournalism Professor's Project, Gerald John Davey Jan 1998

The Social Landscape: A Photojournalism Professor's Project, Gerald John Davey

Communication Faculty Research

Social landscape photography focuses upon aspects of our everyday environment and follows broadly in the tradition of straight, documentary photography. Significant digital manipulation acceptable in fine art photography, advertising, and increasingly in editorial photography, is out of place here. The social landscape photograph attempts to capture and replicate the initial visual experience or insight of the photographer. Such manipulation would undermine, over time, the fundamental believability of the image. On the other hand, the serendipitous nature of the subject matter and the widely varying conditions under which social landscape photographs are produced benefit greatly from the precise contrast control and …

Press Gag Law, Robert Satterfield Jan 1903

Press Gag Law, Robert Satterfield

Nelan Political Cartoons

Depicts a large cartoonist labelled "Nelan" dipping a small figure labelled "Penny" in spilled ink with the imprint "Press Gag Law." Behind a small dog says, "How careless of Penny." In 1903, Samuel Pennypacker, Governor of Pennsylvania, signed the Salus-Grady libel law, also known as the "Pennsylvania Anti-Cartoon law," showing his anger with cartoonist Charles Nelan who regularly depicted him as a bird parroting his cousin's rhetoric. There was wide outrage over the Salus-Grady law and it was never enforced and was rescinded in 1907 after Pennypacker's defeat.

An All Around Kick, Charles Nelan Jan 1900

An All Around Kick, Charles Nelan

Nelan Political Cartoons

John Bull, back against a fence, holding a German Merchant ship in one hand and an American Merchant ship in the other, surrounded by Uncle Sam and two unidentified characters [Germany and Italy?] with “Russia” looking over the fence. A pipe-smoking man with a rifle labelled “Kruger” walking in the background.

Will Justice Be Smothered?, Charles Nelan Jan 1900

Will Justice Be Smothered?, Charles Nelan

Nelan Political Cartoons

A blindfolded Lady Justice about to be smothered by two masked men holding a blanket bearing "Political Influence." The table near Justice is labelled "New Jersey" and the book on the table is "Law." A bottle of "Knock-out Drops" and an unconscious woman lie on the ground.

The Sole Survivor, Charles Nelan Jan 1900

The Sole Survivor, Charles Nelan

Nelan Political Cartoons

Grover Cleveland wearing a sign reading, "The Democratic Party cannot with honor undertake the battle of the people except under a Leader that represents it best traditions and purposes." He is sitting on a tomb "W.J. Bryan, Died: 1896 & 1900," with gravestones nearby for Tom Johnson, A.P. Gorman, Dave Hill, Richard Olney, and Judge Parker. Likely refers to the election of 1900 when W.J. Bryan was defeated for the second time (1896 was the first time) by Wm. McKinley. Bryan would run again and be defeated again in 1908.

Subdue The Insurrection!, Charles Nelan Jan 1899

Subdue The Insurrection!, Charles Nelan

Nelan Political Cartoons

Wm. McKinley holding a flag while Uncle Sam faces him holding a broadside reading, "Subdue the insurrection! No other course is possible for the United States to pursue, with national honor. [signed] The Phlippines [sic] Commission." A portrait of General Otis is on the wall behind. Very likely refers to the First Philippine Commission established by McKinley on January 20, 1899.

Listen!, Charles Nelan Jan 1896

Listen!, Charles Nelan

Nelan Political Cartoons

Wm. McKinley and W.J. Bryan kneeling on the ground, each with one ear to the ground. In the clouds, “November elections.” This could refer to either the 1896 election or the 1900 election, Republican McKinley defeating Democrat Bryan in both. The election of 1896 was considered a critical election that changed American politics at the time.
