Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

This project report highlights a partnership among Communication & Rhetoric university members and staff and students from El Centro del Quinto Sol which is a community recreation center. We describe the context and background of our project, workshops that employ Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) techniques, and provide some reflections and pictures documenting this joint learning experience.

Faris’s dissertation was a 4-year qualitative study of the Tippecanoe County Problem Solving Reentry Court. Dr. Faris explains: “I took a criminal justice course taught by Dr. JoAnn Miller, who was committed to using her knowledge to better the community. She designed the Reentry Court and invited me to serve with her on the team that supported ex-prisoners, men and women, returning to the community after years of incarceration. The team met with and advised the judge, attending weekly court sessions with ex-prisoners. REDEFINE: Messages about Masculinity was held in the Berg Gallery on May 7th, 2019. REDEFINE’s story began on an evening of Fall Quarter of 2018 at Barrelhouse in Downtown San Luis Obispo. The overarching goal of the event was to start a conversation about masculinity and to educate. As communication students, we studied the value of building relationships and communicating effectively. We believe that listening to personal narratives of diverse interpretations through monologues, music, and video is a great way to learn about masculinity.
