Challenging The Media-Incarceration Complex Through Media Education, Bill Yousman Jan 2013

Challenging The Media-Incarceration Complex Through Media Education, Bill Yousman

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

Focusing on prime-time dramatic television as the most prevalent source of fictional images of violence, crime, and incarceration, in this chapter I address the distorted narratives and images that saturate popular television dramas. I also draw upon interviews I conducted with ex-prisoners to show how media representations of imprisonment, though inaccurate and misleading, shape the perceptions even of those who have themselves been incarcerated.

Power Girls Before Girl Power: 1980s Toy-Based Girl Cartoons, Katia Perea Jan 2013

Power Girls Before Girl Power: 1980s Toy-Based Girl Cartoons, Katia Perea

Publications and Research

The socio/cultural history and partnership of toy advertisement and children’s television is rich and well documented (Schneider 1989, Kunkel 1988, Seiter 1993). In this article I discuss the influence of policy in girl’s cartoon programming as well as the relationship between commercialization and financial motivation in creating a girl cartoon media product. I then discuss the formulaic, gender normative parameters this new genre set in place to identify girl cartoons as well as girl media consumption and how within those parameters girl cartoon characters were able to represent an empowered girl popular culture product a decade before the nomenclature Girl …

Social Learning Theory In The Frontline Documentary “The Merchants Of Cool”, Alixe A. Wiley Sep 2012

Social Learning Theory In The Frontline Documentary “The Merchants Of Cool”, Alixe A. Wiley

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

In the Frontline documentary The Merchants of Cool, the relationship between major media conglomerates and their hedonistic teenage customers is examined through exploring the different tactics industries use to discover and market the next “cool” thing. Industries maintain what the documentary refers to as a “feedback loop” with their customers, which is a cyclic, supply-and-demand relationship that blurs the line between fiction and reality. It has become impossible to tell which side is imitating the other: who do the products and trends that define popular youth culture belong to? What's more, are the sexual and aggressive hormone-fueled behaviors on …

The Portrayal Of Schizophrenia In Television: An Experiment Assessing How Viewer Attitudes Are Affected, Lindsey Jo Hand, Paul Traudt

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Portrayals of schizophrenia in the media have been found to be very negative in nature. This study is an attempt to take research in this area a step further by conducting an experiment measuring attitudes of viewers toward schizophrenia before and after viewing an episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit in which a man with schizophrenia is depicted as a dangerous sexual deviant. Participants were given a pretest, viewed the television show and then were given a post-test. The post-test and pretest are identical and consist of questions from the Community Attitudes on Mental Illness (CAMI) scale and …

Neo-Populism And Political Mass Communication In Latin America: Press Freedom, Media Access, And Democracy, Nagidmy Marquez Acosta

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This paper studies the relationship between neo-populism and political mass communication in Latin America. Through a quantitative assessment, this research aims to examine the role that media politics plays in strengthening democracy and neo-populism in eighteen Latin American countries. In particular, the author examines two key elements of the political mass communication concept: press freedom and media access. Can neo-populism be understood without an assessment of media politics? Do political pressure and control of media content, combined with widespread access to different channels of mass communication strengthen neo-populism in Latin American? The author concludes that while Latin American countries are …

From Broadcasting To Narrowcasting: Televised Sport In Western Europe In The New Millennium, John Moran Jan 1998

From Broadcasting To Narrowcasting: Televised Sport In Western Europe In The New Millennium, John Moran

Masters

This thesis seeks to explore the critical importance which televised sport will play within the paradigm of the continuing evolution of broadcasting in Western Europe. The arguments and issues which arise are situated within the context of cut-throat competition for sports rights between traditional terrestrial broadcasters and pay TV organisations in what is increasingly becoming a fragmented television market-place. The thesis which utilises developments in the United Kingdom and Ireland as its model plots the technical, financial and institutional issues which have surfaced regarding televised sport over the past sixty years. As such, the motivations behind the purchase of sports …
