Media Opportunities For African-American Women In The Baton Rouge Area Compared To The National Average, Katrina N. Mabry

For many years the media has been dominated by whites, showing disregard for the minority population of the United States. The media of the country lacks diversity with race and gender. This study focuses on the newspaper, radio and television media in the local area and compared its employment of African American women to the national averages of employment for the United States. Because the media is Louisiana lacks diversity, the opportunities for employment for African American females are slim. This article is a note (lightly edited for English only) from a professor in Skopje, Macedonia that was addressed to a professional colleague of the IBPP Editorial Board in response to that colleague's inquiry into the situation in Macedonia. The author notes a difference between what has been broadcast via the Western media and the perceptions of conditions in-country.

"KBBG-FM: Communicating to Educate" is a qualitative study conducted to examine an African-American owned and operated, public, listener-supported radio station in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls community in Northeast Iowa. The researcher wanted to study how such a local radio station reaches out to its community. A review of literature revealed since the passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, radio has become less and less diversified, harming community localism in radio. Minority ownership of radio has also declined to an even smaller scale than before the 1996 Telecommunications Act.
