Terrorism On The Evening News: An Analysis Of Coverage Of The Twa Hostage Crisis On "Cbs Evening News", Ann M. Savage
Terrorism On The Evening News: An Analysis Of Coverage Of The Twa Hostage Crisis On "Cbs Evening News", Ann M. Savage
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Terrorism and its news coverage have demonstrated to be a concern of the entire broadcast industry. Previous literature and studies suggest that terrorists rely heavily upon broadcast news response to their actions. Not only has it been suggested that news media actually become players in terroristic incidents, some have gone so far as to accuse networks of terrorism itself. This criticism contends that the networks depict an unbalanced representation of the activities that transpire. The network coverage of an incident that has been most notably criticized has been the TWA flight 847 hijacking and hostage taking in June of 1985. …

The Political And Ideological Context Of Broadcast News Cbs Nightly News Coverage Of Eastern Europe, Terese A. Thompson
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This study examines the influence of United States/Soviet relations on network news coverage of Eastern Europe. It also measures the ideological character of network news reports about Eastern Europe or how television news in the United States is constructed along a particular ideological vision. The specific operational questions researched are: Is network news content influenced by trends in United States/Soviet relations? The Effects Of Television Newscaster Style On Short-Term Viewer Retention, Eric Harlan
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Samples of several populations, made up of both traditional and non-traditional students attending the University of Tennessee at Martin were shown different "newscasts," each newscast depicting a different style of news presentation. One style was the "Formal" newscast, and the other was the "Informal" style.
The Formal style is characterized by direct eye-camera contact by the newscaster, a direct style of presentation, and no interaction between newscasters. The Informal style is characterized by interaction between newscasters, a more Informal presentation of the facts, and a relaxed atmosphere as the newscast progresses. The Rhetoric Of Rescue, Mary Blakeman
The Rhetoric Of Rescue, Mary Blakeman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis examines the television reporters' verbal depictions of two rescue events, the rescue of Jessica McClure in 1987 and the rescue of three whales at Pt. Barrow, Alaska in 1988, in order to discover what rhetorical techniques were used to appeal to the public interest. Analog criticism, metaphorical analysis and pentadic analysis were used to discover the dominant language reporters chose. Three main conclusions were drawn from this analysis: (1) use of the dramatistic pentad showed how reporters focused public attention away from the purpose,(2) verbal and visual depictions cannot be separated when studying television news stories and (3) …

Covering The Plague Years: Four Approaches To The Aids Beat, James Kinsella
Covering The Plague Years: Four Approaches To The Aids Beat, James Kinsella
New England Journal of Public Policy
AIDS reporting has changed dramatically since 1981. But it was not until mid-1985, when Rock Hudson was diagnosed with the disease, that media outlets began playing the epidemic as a story of major proportions.
Because almost no major media institution embraced the AIDS story as an important issue, coverage of the epidemic was often the result of a reporter's initiative. Consequently, the connection the individual journalist had with the epidemic became a much stronger influence on what appeared in the news and on what Americans knew about the crisis than in any other recent major health story. This article examines …

Viewers' Reactions To Ordinary People In Television News Events, Janice R. Kidd
Masters Theses
Viewers' Reactions to Ordinary People in Television News Events examines two hypotheses relating to respondents' reactions to viewing violent events or the likelihood of violent death as portrayed on the major news networks. Research centers on reactions of viewers to ordinary people caught in extraordinary news events. Results of two free-flow written exercises are discussed.
Research excludes reactions to viewing those in the news, such as police personnel, soldiers etc., whose lives might be expected to be involved in violent or dangerous events.
