Studying The Effects Of High School Athletics Social Media, Justin Scott

This research project focuses on high school athletics social media pages and their relevance to high school communication audiences and institutional communication goals.

I conducted two in-depth interviews with school officials from a large Michigan high school, a survey of the high school sports social media followers, and an analysis of data from that high school’s Facebook page.

I was able to determine that seeing social media content from high school athletics pages had a positive relationship with how the school’s quality of social media communication was perceived, intentions to attend athletic events, and an increased awareness of the school’s …

Punk rock Islam may not a common phrase to hear in society, but it is quickly expanding in popularity and in effectiveness. A fiction book entitled "The Taqwacores" tells the story of faithful Muslims practicing punk rock Islam in their own way. The novel utilizes constittive rhetoric, a concept popularized by Maurice Charland, to create a social movement that is sweeping the world. In recent history, there have been movements advocating for conversation and change regarding traditional gender roles. As a central part of culture, British television has not escaped this scrutiny. BBC's crime drama Sherlock directed by Steven Moffat has received both critical acclaim and attention from the general public for its portrayal of women. In this essay, we venture into this conversation, and explore portrayals of existing gender roles and how the writers of the show choose to dissent with the audience's expectations of gender portrayal. Reality television has exploded into a popular culture phenomenon in recent years, and it is likely to remain a permanent media staple. With its spike in popularity, reality TV has attracted scholarly interest, but most of this attention focuses on audiences’ responses to and motivations for viewing these fact-based programs. This study, however, is more concerned with the rhetorical strategies employed in reality television that appeal to viewers and compel them to keep watching. Brexit and the election of Trump both relied on a particular type of nationalistic appeal to collective narcissism — an exaggerated emotional belief that the nation’s greatness is being undermined by other nations and other people. This tendency is catered to by appeals to make the nation great again by shutting borders and embracing isolationism while scapegoating refugees and immigrants. The rise of jingoistic leaders like Trump, Putin, and Erdogan can be explained by such appeals. This study examines how exposure to female superheroes’ body images increases the strength of parasocial relationships, perceived homophily, and level of self-esteem that female college students experience. Three images of female superheroes were manipulated into round, muscular, and hyper-thin body types. Eighty-one students at a west coast university were randomly assigned to view one of three images of the female superhero. After viewing the images, the participants were asked to answer three Likert scales to determine the strength of parasocial relationships to the superheroine (bonds with the character), perceived homophily (perceived similarity), and self-esteem. Celebrity endorsement has a strong influence on the general population. However, this effect was typically studied in the context of celebrities’ support for non- controversial topics. We wanted to see if celebrities would have the same effect when they supported controversial topics. It is hypothesized that those who are exposed to a liked celebrity endorsing a conspiracy theory will be more inclined to accept the theory.

We questioned how BGSU celebrated the anniversaries of the acceptance of Title IX. In 1972, Title IX was passed, prohibiting sexual discrimination in any educational program or activity that receives federal financial aid. It was created to help eliminate gender discrimination in the educational and athletic system. In the archive, we found folders filled with information and images of the anniversaries of the passing of Title IX and were pleased to focus on the celebration. 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of Bowling Green State University’s Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. As a part of a Humanistic Research Methods course, we conducted archival research to explore a variety of research questions that were concerned with the 40 year evolution of the program. Our research question: How has the program worked toward raising awareness and advocating against power-based violence. We utilized poetic inquiry, collage work, and performance art to complete this project.

Since its inception in 2004, Facebook has been one of the leading social networking sites among college students. Despite its numerous advantages, the issue of privacy on Facebook has been a major concern. In order to know how college students perceive privacy on Facebook, in-depth interviews were conducted among 20 college students (10 males, 10 females) at Arkansas State University. The study found that a majority of the participants have not read the Facebook privacy policies noted when one signs in to use Facebook. Past research in memory studies has indicated that there are social factors that influence who are more or less likely to recall certain events as important. Past research emphasizes age as one of the most important variables; however, when regarding memories of social movements, additional demographic factors such as gender, race, region, and education may have potential impacts. Purpose: The purpose of this mixed-methods sequential explanatory study was to examine the influence of private social media usage on accountability, adherence, and social connectedness in weight loss and fitness program participants.

Methodology: This study utilized a mixed-methods sequential explanatory research design comprised of a multi-state quantitative survey of weight loss and fitness participants and subsequent qualitative interviews to elucidate the influence of private social media on weight loss and fitness program participants regarding program accountability and adherence, and social connectedness to others.
