Two Cabinet Ministers recently offered a sobering view of the state of ethnic relations in Singapore, against the backdrop of rising religiosity and global terrorism. Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam spoke of four threats to social cohesion, including Muslims growing more distant from the rest of society and feelings of Islamophobia among non-Muslims. Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli reiterated the importance of practising religion suited to the local context and for Muslims not to be influenced by radical foreign ideologies — often easily spread through social media.

After 1998 Reformation, Indonesia has been experiencing democratization and decentralization. Among others, general election for local government (pemilukada) since 2005 is an implementation of democratization and decentralization. Although democratization in Indonesia was praised by some researchers, many others also figured out some corruptive actions in the democratic process. Warren’s conception about democratic corruption helped us to understand the paradox of post-Reformation democratization and decentralization. According to Warren, corruption in a democracy is a duplicitous exclusion that gives an advantage to few parties in the expense of the others who are excluded from the process of decision-making and collective action. However, …

Law Number 6 of 2014 on Village—apart from its political contribution in democratizing statevillage relation—has a fundamental limitation on natural resource issues in the village in the light of agrarian and ecological crises. This Law offers a minor elaboration on natural resource issues and provides limited authority to the village on this field, while no reference is made to the problem of inequality in community’s access to local natural resources. Confronted with such structural challenges, it is argued that “struggle for village autonomy” will hardly lead to significant social transformation without involving attempts to establish just and sustainable natural resource …

This strategy is a deliberate means of including and excluding certain information and/or details. It is a tactic used to provide the viewer with a carefully “framed” picture.
This analysis reveals the …

By analyzing several works of literature written by Latina/o authors who lived in barrios that faced these challenges, as well as research addressing crime and the lack of law enforcement in marginalized neighborhoods, we have …

Averaging 11 hours a day, youth are encountering new challenges like miscommunication and risking becoming a less productive citizen by the time they finish secondary school. Media literacy is a tool that combats this overexposure of media to educate, create and develop ways youth can combat this influence of mass media messages. This project promotes media literacy education, based in the use of the Jon Piaget’s constructivist learning theory and George Gerbner’s cultivation theory. The project is a media literacy …
