Effect Of Convergence Culture On Spectatorship, Amanda Marcus
Effect Of Convergence Culture On Spectatorship, Amanda Marcus
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
Media convergence has changed how we receive and process information. No longer are we passive spectators, but we are part of the media we consume. Because of the explosion of technology since the turn of the century and a new definition of spectatorship, producers of media can no longer control how their messages are received; they have to engage their audience and listen to feedback in order to remain functioning. Fellow peers serve as informants or as a new source of media. This also affects our individual identities, which shapes our cultural identity. Social media enables us to present ourselves …

It always amazes me how some people
Seem to be experts in fields they’ve never seen,
Know the right directions on paths they’ve never walked,
And know people they seldom acknowledge as such

Getting Young Adults Tuned In To Public Radio: A Survey Of Uses, Perceptions, Content, And Programming, Johnathan Michael Reaves
Student Theses and Dissertations
Today's young adults are using many different mobile devices and media sources for entertainment and information. This puts traditional media at a disadvantage. For public radio, reaching out to young adults can be a challenge in a digital age. This study examined how young adults, between the ages of 18 and 25, are using radio today as well as perceptions they may have about public radio. Under the theoretical framework of the Uses and Gratifications Theory, this study measured how often the participants listened to traditional radio, what they preferred to listen to, and what their perceptions were about public …

On Sport and Society
The continuing saga of the NFL and Ray Rice has now become basically the Roger Goodell story. The Commissioner has not managed to stay ahead of the news cycle and has failed to cut his losses. Rather than to accept responsibility for his mistakes and missteps he has continued to deal in what now seems to be his only task as Commissioner, to Protect the Shield. And it’s not going well.

Kno.e.sis Publications
In this paper, we describe an approach to filter out noisy data generated by keywords-based tweet filtering methods by performing Word Sense Disambiguation on those keywords used to collect tweets. We present the noise filtering problem as a binary classification problem and discuss our evaluation strategy which is to be carried out in future.

Lingnan Theses

Prior to, or concurrent with, the encoding of concepts into speech, the individual faces decisions about whether, what, when, how, and with whom to communicate. Compared to the existing wealth of linguistic knowledge however, we know little of the mechanisms that govern the delivery and accrual of information. Here we focus on a fundamental issue of communication: The decision whether to deliver information. Specifically, we study spontaneous confession to a victim. Given the costs of social devaluation, offenders are hypothesized to refrain from confessing unless the expected benefits of confession (e.g. enabling the victim to remedially modify their course of …

PHYSICIANS’ ATTITUDES ABOUT RECOMMENDING SURGERY FOR EARLY STAGE LUNG CANCER AND POSSIBLE REASONS FOR RACIAL DISPARITIES
ABSTRACT
Purpose: Patient refusal for lung cancer surgery is significant, but other factors, such as negative framing of the treatment discussion, may be involved. Physician attitudes could influence the nuances of and therefore the conclusions of these discussions. We determined physicians’ attitudes and the influence it has on possible decisions against lung cancer surgery, particularly surgical rates for blacks, using a companion survey.
Methods: The study is a prospective, multicenter observational trial conducted at five sites in North and South Carolina from December …

Since MTV's introduction in 1981, music videos have shaped popular culture in various ways. Transitioning from television/cable to online platforms, thousands of music videos are viewed daily by millions through streaming sites such as YouTube and Vimeo. As a collaborative group, we wrote and produced a music video in collaboration with the metal band Lick the Blade, focusing on their original piece, “Blood Soaked Majesty.” Footage was produced for both a performance video, showing only the band performing their piece, and a narrative video, featuring a story line that parallels the lyrics. An audience will be able to view a …
